Title: Sync to device
Post by: Tigger on January 14, 2020, 05:56:59 am
Hi,

I want to listen to my music from the MC Library via my Iphone in my car.
How can I do this - are there plans for the remote to sync files to the device or are there other possibilities?

regards

Syncing to an iPhone is, and always will be, an issue because Apple maintains a closed environment.

I just use Handheld Sync to sync to a local hard drive location, then used to use iTunes to sync to an old iPhone. I've all but dumped even that old iPhone now.

Basically, once you have a directory location with the tracks you want on the device, you are pretty much on your own. But search the forum, as there are other tools and lots of discussion on how to do what you want.

Or use JRemote (iOS) in the car and connect directly to your MC Server at home over mobile data, and play anything from your Library.

Hi Roderick

My Plex on iPhone does sync video to the device for offline viewing - have not tried it with music though. I also have a (free) foobar2000 for iOS and it allows downloading tracks/albums/artists via DLNA - is this conceptually different?
I am not an Apple developer, so have no idea what are the restrictions, and I have seen such responses before. Just curious though, why they are such an issue for JRemote.

Cheers,
BH

Yes. Well, different from the Handheld Sync functionality.

An App on an iPhone that can play music from a Server, being also able to download a copy of the tracks, particularly using DLNA, is completely different to an application on a PC being able to push files to an iPhone. Only iTunes, and a few utilities, are able to do that as far as I know.

I don't use JRemote on iOS, so I don't know if it can download tracks to the iPhone itself. I know that capability is planned for the new JRemote2 for Android. Search the forum some more. There have been lots of discussions.

i.e. https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,121993.0.html is recent and implies JRemote can't download files for offline playback.

So I guess this is a feature request, if you want offline playback.

But as I said earlier, you can connect to your MC Server from outside your network, for example in your car, and playback whatever content you want to. You just need to set up Port Forwarding of port 52199 to your MC Server in your router, make sure your MC Server is always turned on, and connect using the JRiver Access Key method. Again, lots of information in the forum.

Thanks Roderick, now this makes sense to me.

+1 to your suggestion on using JRemote by connecting to a home server when in a car - tried it, it works.
