Title: Albums showing up under wrong artist.
Post by: martyk on March 23, 2019, 02:53:49 pm
I just noticed today that I have albums showing up under the wrong artists.  If I go to the artist column and click on Petty, Tom (which is how I put them), I get all sorts of albums from different artists.  How would this have gotten corrupted?  I check multiple PC's that I have MC running and they are all the same.  Is there any fix?

Please post a screen shot or two or three.  Try to show the Album, Artist, and Album Artist (auto) fields when you post your screen shot.  I have some guesses, but they are just guesses until I see what's going on in your library.

Thanks,

Brian.

Try right clicking on a file that has this problem and use Library Tools > Update Library from File Tags.

Here is a screen shot.  You will notice that under Petty, Tom it lists a number of albums that are not Tom Petty.  The song information and file location are correct.  It only seems to have happened with artists beginning with "M" that I have found so far.  Thanks for the help!

You could try restoring your library from an earlier backup - preferably from a time before you expect this weird occurrence has occurred. You also mention that this has happened on multiple pcs can you provide some details about how these pcs are linked. It is unlikely that this could have happened independently on a number of pcs (it's unlikely to happen on even 1 pc!).

Yes, I did that, but I would like to know why it happened.  Is there a bug somewhere?  I have been using JRiver for
about 18 years and never run into this particular problem.  I also use Sonos software to find my library, which has another problem with metadata.  Wondering if that could have something to do with it.

I did fix the issue with the known problems (that I found), but who knows what else is not correct

Thanks

I've never come across this particular problem and I've no idea how it could happen - especially in multiple pcs! I don't see how some other program could meddle with MC's database structure, unless they are changing the tags in the files.

Does this problem only occur when you're using Sonos or another device to play?  If so, power them off and back on.

There seems to be no relationship between any other software and the JRiver.

Based on the one screenshot you have posted, which doesn't show the filename so doesn't really provide much information, you, or some other software, have changed the Artist tags in the files. MC has then dutifully updated its Library to reflect the new Artist names.

How did this happen? Well, if it was done in MC, then you probably selected a bunch of Tom Petty files to update his [Artist] tag, not realising that you already had a bunch of other files selected, and so you updated those "M" files at the same time.

Or if it is possible, the Sonos software updated the tags.
Or if you used something like MusicBrainz, and again selected files unintentionally, you updated the tags incorrectly. Easy to do in MusicBrainz.

You get the idea. MC didn't change the tags by itself. It doesn't do that.

Okay, I think I have figured out the problem.  I restored the library from a repaired backup.  Everything looks good.  Then I try and connect to that PC using JRemote on my Ipad.  And the old mislabeled files re-appear.  The problem appears to be JRemote.  I understand
that JRemote is not part of JRiver, but if anyone has any ideas, I am all ears.

Thanks

Guess no one has any ideas?  Geez, I have been a JRiver user since 2000.

Try clearing JRemote's cache.

Nope, no go

Now that you have fixed the Library, run "Update tags from library" to fix the tags in the files. Just do it for the problem files.

Then check and see if JRemote shows them correctly again. You may need to clear its cache again.

Yes, have done all that. Keeps happening

Just to be clear:

1.  Restore library.
2.  Verify in the standard view (on the JRiver server computer) interface that everything is ok.
3.  Connect with JRemote.
4.  Lots of files with the wrong artist show in JRemote.
5.  Those same files show with the wrong artist in Standard View (on the JRiver server computer)

If that's it, I've never heard report of that before.  I would probably set up media network to use Read Only authentication and try again.

Or maybe I've got the sequence wrong?

Brian.

That is the correct sequence.  It is is very strange that it only happens with artists that start with "M".
If i look under Petty, Tom on the main computer, everything is fine.  Then I connect with JRemote and then go
back and check on the main computer, and look under Petty, Tom, I will see all sorts of albums for people like
Van Morrison, Bob Mold and so on that have changed the artist to Petty.  The songs and all other information is correct, it just
shows the wrong artist.  The reason that is may not have been reported is that unless you look for it, you probably wouldn't notice it. I just happened to be wanting to play some Tom Petty and when I searched by artist I saw all these other artists.  Have not found it happening under any other artist.

Check your tags on the server for Artist and Album Artist.

Check your tags on the server for Artist and Album Artist.

This.

The sequence is probably more like:
1. Restore library.
2. Verify in the standard view (on the JRiver server computer) interface that everything is ok.
3. MC, using the information from the restored library, recognises that the files have changed, by the date and time.
4. MC Auto Import updates the library with the Artist from the tags inside the files, changing the "M" artist to Tom Petty, because the setting "Update for external changes" is selected.
5. Connect with JRemote. JRemote shows the updated Artist information, correctly. But of course the wrong Artist.
6. Go back to MC on the main computer, which has now refreshed the view you looked at before, and now it is showing the incorrect Artist.

You could test that theory simply by restoring the Library, then waiting for a while, and then refresh the View to see if the Artist changes.

Or you could just look at the "Tag Dump" area of the tag window, and see what is actually in one of the problem files. I think you will find that the Artist in the tag dump area is Tom Petty. Which is why I suggested running run "Update tags from library"

If you don't have a "Tag Dump" area in the tag window, search the forum for "Tag Dump" and you will find instructions for adding it.

To fix, make sure that "Options > General > IMporting & Tagging > Update tags when file info changes" is selected, restore the Library, immediately turn off Auto Import (uncheck "Options > Library & Folders > Auto-Import > Run auto-import in background") so that the setting "Update for external changes" doesn't change the Artist again, then run "Update tags from Library".

Or just fix the problem tracks in MC, with the setting "Update tags when file info changes" turned on, and MC will update the tags in the files. The problem shouldn't recur then. Unless, of course, it is some other software that keeps updating the tags in the files.

Well, I have tried all of these things and nothing works.  Now, I can restore the library and see that it restored properly.  Then within 30 seconds I recheck it and it is incorrect again.  There must be some setting someplace that I am missing that is making these files change back.  In 19 years, I have never had this issue.

You need to confirm, for one of the problem files, what's in the Tags inside the file.  Use an external application like KID3 or MP3Tag or something like that.  If the Tags inside the file are "broken", this would make sense.
