Title: Hey Mr. Hacker Man
Post by: JimH on August 27, 2018, 01:52:12 am
Whoever you are, I'm sorry that you don't have a more meaningful life.

Why did you attack our servers (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,117123.msg810255.html#msg810255)?  Was it for fun?  Or for money?

My guess is that you live in a part of the world where the economy doesn't work very well.  You found work that isn't very nice but at least you can get some money.

I want you to understand what you did means to the people you attack.

We were out of business for a week.  We lost the respect of our customers, something we had worked hard to earn.  We no longer have their trust.   We are ashamed.  You found a vulnerability and exploited it.

Trust is a big part of how our economy works and it's why it works better than most.  We know we can probably rely on what someone says and we know that they are probably not going to steal from us.

You may think it's ok to take things that don't belong to you.  We don't.  We like to build things that have lasting value.  We like to work with other people who share this goal.

I hope your life eventually has this kind of meaning and this sense of purpose.  Start by just trying to be better.  Build things, not tear things down.

Do something that you're proud of.  It's a great feeling.

I fully understand how you feel. Everyone should understand that you did not ask for this. In my eyes you have nothing to be ashamed of. I have more respect for you now as you have owned this and worked diligently to fix it. I applaud you and your staff. Whether you like it or not I am a loyal JRiver MC / Interact User. Ornery codger that I am.  ;D

Thank You

Patrick

You did everything right - unlike the many companies that divulge the info 2 or 3 years down the line.

*cough*Yahoo*cough*

I agree, you guys did what was right here. There's big companies that are hacked (or attempted to be hacked) every single day, which they seldomly announce. You guys were transparent from day one and kept everybody in the loop, which is exactly what a company should do if/when this happens to them.

Haven't loss my respect or trust. The nature of a web is it's full of holes, and it's true for all this great web tech we use everyday. We continuously learn and do our darn best to stay ahead of the creepy crawlies in the web but things are going to happen. I know to a lot of the non-techie world they expect everything to be rock solid out here but unfortunately we are nowhere near that future. I hope and I would guess that most of your customers understand at some level how hard it is to keep all this running and secure. These slime balls are out there waging this war all day, every day, and we have to fight it off while trying to run our business and provide our customers with great products and services at the same time which is a major chore in and of itself. Hang in there, just grow and learn from this. Like mentioned before even the Fortune 500's get hacked/breached daily. Your apogee and promise to continue to do your best is all that should be expected from you all and our sympathy and encouragement is all you should be getting from your customer base IMHO.

Why do people climb mountains? Because they are there, they get a thrill out of it and they can.

Why do people hack servers? Because they believe they can make money out of it, there's a tiny chance of getting caught, they are there, they get a thrill out of it and they can.

There is no 100% guaranteed defence so unfortunately the risk is always there.  :(

To JimH
I might be new to the forum but I have been a JRiver user for a while, check if you wish.
You secured things as well as you could and someone found a weakness in the software.
Why are you ashamed, you did no wrong
Lost trust, speak for yourself, I still trust JRiver to do the best possible and reasonable, app and security wise
You did nothing wrong, poop happens, all I ask is that JRiver learns from this issue, along with the users.
Lets fix the problems and get on with it, and hold your heads high, no shame
