Hey,
i am a new user and bought MC few days ago.
I am a little unhappy and at a loss. MC crashes again and again in different situations. For example when closing the program or changing an album.
I have already deleted and reinstalled the program.
My system:
Mac mini 2018
6-Core Intel Core I
20 GB of RAM
Mac OS Monterey
All my music files are stored on a Synology NAS within my LAN network connected via Ethernet 1000BaseT.
Do you have any idea or approach to a solution?
Thanks and best regards from Germany.

Enable logging and reproduce the crash then look at the logs. 9 times out of 10 it's bad files that causes issues like this. You can also try disabling auto-import in the background and see if the issue goes away. If it does, that almost certainly means bad files are the cause.
-
Wow, thanks for the quick feedback. I´ll try that out. Where are the logs stored?
/Users/name/Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 30/Log.txt
Is that right?
-
The Wiki has a great topic about logging: https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging
But yes, that should be the log. You might also look for a Previous Log.txt as well.
-
What version? 30.0.93 is available.
-
Yes MC is up to date.
-
Update the NAS Firmware.
Set up a test library with only local files [Wiki: Library]
-
NAS is up to date too.
So far everything is running stable. I'll get back to you when I have a log file. Thanks again for the great and fast support.
-
Since upgrading to 30.0.93, getting a lot of crashes. Before that, pretty incredibly rare. I have the log, but have no idea how to read it. I did get this from the Problem Report.

One more addition.
When you exit the program it takes several seconds until the GUI is actually closed.

Funny...I have the same issue. I've had my library on a HDD for years and decided to move it to a Synology NAS. I also had a bunch of files I had pruned from the library to make it fit in a smaller hard drive so I could back it up. I decided to put those back in to the NAS by importing them into the same library. All was going well until the audio analyzer started on each file. At some point it crashed and the Mac Mini rebooted on its own. So I repeated the exercise and this time it hung and I had to manually reboot the Mac with the power button.
So I read the above and will try the log file as suggested.
FYI -- I have the latest Synology DSM, MC V93 and the latest Mac Ventura with an M1 chip.

How are you connected from the Mac to the NAS? Meaning are you using DLNA, or Windows file sharing (SMB/CIFS), or native Mac file sharing, or something else?
The best practice for NAS with a Mac is to use Windows file sharing.
Log files from either of you (using MC logging) would probably help identify the issue.

Ok I'll try to remember the log file next time :-)
My NAS is connected via mac smb and then I access a share of my music folder.
-
I just reinstalled MC and while my music directory is being scanned I installed two radio stations. In the process MC crashed. A log was not created, there is only the previouslog.txt that I have attached.

No NAS, just local files on my Mac. Been using JRiver for a few years and crashes were pretty rare. Since going to the latest version, getting lots of crashes. They are random, but do have one consistency, they occur after finishing the last song of an album.
-
MajorCyco: You should turn on logging as described in the wiki link. Then submit the MC log here after your next crash. That should have some good diagnostic info in it to help the team identify the problem.

Post the WHOLE crash report. It's telling you that it's crashing the Thread 12.

Enclosed is my log from today. I kept the log from the day I posted my message, but it is too large to attach.

The apple crash report, not the log.

Good morning (in Germany),
MC just crashed again on exit and no log file was created. Attached is a screenshot of the location in the Finder where the file should be.
Next time I will copy the Apple report and attach it.
-
It can happen that fast. I was able to reproduce it. Report attached.

It's crashing in webkit (Apple's web access API)
Can you give some simple steps to reproduce it so we can get that into the debugger?
-
You're welcome.
I didn't do much. Listened to a radio station and then gradually listened to tracks from different albums. Then while skipping, the crash came.
The second time I wanted to quit the app via command+Q. After that, the Apple or App - I call it - hourglass was visible for about 2-3 seconds before the crash was displayed.
In both cases, MC was opened for about 2-3 minutes in total - test-wise.

Quick testing with Radio Paradise and Radio Swiss Jazz on my M1 shows no issues.
Can you share the station you are using and what your playback device is?

Maybe it is really due to the NAS connection because MC crashes only when changing the stored flac songs or when quitting.

Are you using any trackinfo plugins?
-
No I have not installed any additional plugins and I only use MC out of the box.

Ok, I don't get why your apple crash report is in the Webkit API. That would indicate you have a webpage of some kind showing.
Is it possible that the flac files cover art are image URL's as opposed to embedded images?
-
Of course, I can't rule that out. But how can I check this? Usually I have a jpg or png in the directory of the respective album.
-
Maybe there is also one or the other cue file. Can this be a reason?
-
I just did a search for file extensions and found one or two .url file extensions. Could this be the cause?

The quickest way to find out is to move/remove those 2 files and then see if MC will open up and play without crashing
-
I thought so too. Here in southern Germany, it's getting to be evening and we're about to have dinner and an evening of TV. I go tomorrow on it :-)
... and will reproduce the steps from today again.

I am so glad about DeePL. Otherwise communication would be a bit more cumbersome. I am also over 60 and my English is a bit rusty :-)

I hadn't heard of that. Just looked it up. It sounds interesting.

Are you referring to the apple_crash_report.txt, the previous.log, or something else?
Also looked my images. All are embedded with no urls.

I had MC run a few times today and so far no crashes.
I probably included the radio stations incorrectly and did not integrate them as web media but only entered the website with the stream url in the playlist. I then wondered each time why when I double clicked on the station the dialog kept appearing. And logically the website of the station did not appear because it was only a stream url.
Maybe this solved the problem. I will continue to monitor this.
-
Good evening from southern Germany!
Unfortunately also the new version 31 crashes. Attached is the Apple crash report.
Had MC running for a few hours. Then I created several playlists and smartlists and then wanted to close the program. In the process came the crash.
See you soon on this channel :-)

Edited:
This crash is only on shutdown?
Are you running Media Server??
Please for this one include the MC log as well.
-
Yes only on exit.
I had a media server installed on my NAS but never actively connected to MC. Does MC automatically connect to a media server on the LAN?
I have now uninstalled it and will test this again.
Unfortunately no log file was generated.

You can turn on logging under Help in the menu bar. Be sure to set a maximum size so it doesn't grow infinitely.

It crashed again tonight. This is the file I get from Console/Crash Reports. It is in an .ips format, so I converted it to .txt

Those are next to impossible to read.
Would you just copy and paste the text from the Apple crash report dialog box when it comes up?
You click on the report button and copy and paste the text from there.

From the latest crash...
I could not post it directly as it exceeds the 20,000 character limit. Trying to see if sharing as a pdf works.

Looks like it's in a Thread trying to stop the Audio device.
So what is your audio device?
What are the settings for that Audio device in MC's Audio setting?
Is DSP studio enabled?
If so, what are the settings?

- Audio Device on the Mac is an AudioQuest DragonFly Red v1.0
- Audio Device in JRiver is set to AudioQuest DragonFly Red v1.0
- Open device with exclusive access
- Software: 100 milliseconds (recommended)
- Hardware: Hardware default (recommended)
- DSP Studio is enabled
- DSP Studio settings are:
- Output format is enabled
- Enabled and processing 48kHz 64-bit 2 ch
- Output Encoding set to None
- 10 Channels, extra channels: None
- Center: 0dB
- Mixing - JRSS Mixing (recommended)
- Subwoofer: JRSS Subwoofer (120 Hz low-pass)
- Equalizer is Rock
-
Why are you using 10 channel mode on a device that only has 2 channels (the dragonfly is a 2 channel DAC)?
Brian.
-
I have no idea. Up until Bob asked, I never looked at it. Thought it was a default.
Update: I unchecked Output Format to see if that helps.
Update #2: Just updated to Media Center 31.
