Title: Issues with Multichannel Flac
Post by: OlGreenEyes on May 16, 2018, 04:13:47 pm
4 channel FLAC files I decoded with DVD Audio Extractor are only playing back in stereo even though JRiver shows them as all 4 channels. They play back fine in VLC.

This seems to effect only 4 channel flac for some reason (quad rips). And somehow one quad rip is showing 5 channels -- there's nothing in the center channel, but the rears are decoding properly.

Any ideas? Thanks much in advance!

UPDATE: Because I'm compulsive, as i'm sure many of you are, I've been endless messing with settings when I should be working. In the Output Format window, I had Channels set to "Same number of channels" as I didn't want to do any up mixing.  But when changed to 5.1, suddenly my 4 channel FLAC files started decoding right (I tested with a familiar track).

Is this a quirk/bug? Shouldn't "Same number of channels" still properly play back a 4 channel FLAC to the right 4 channels? I'm confused!

Many devices only support multichannel formats in a 5.1 layout (6 channels) and not 4 or 5 channel signals.

I see. Thanks. I guess it's my receiver then so I have to tell JRiver to send out the signal to 5.1. It sounds like the rears are accurate so I guess it's fabricating a center track where none exists on the 4.0 stuff. If I check "move center to front l/r" will the center channel still play correctly from actual 5.1 sources?

I haven't messed with digital surround audio much using my computer. I have an analog quad setup here and a collection of SACDs and DVDa's I'm trying to port over to my mac.

Well I answered my own question... no. It will fold all center channel signals into L/R. I see I can create different profiles and load them to individual tacks in the tagging feature in the advanced section. So I made a "quad" profile and assigned that to all my 4 channel stuff.

I'm super impressed how customizable this software is. I haven't yet even waded into all the room correction stuff, etc.....
