Title: 'cleanest' way of updating?

...say from MC 27 to 28?

export library, deinstall/remove MC27, install 28, re-license, reimport library?

Install MC28 when it's available (in July).  It will find your library from MC27.

Uninstall MC27 once you're happy with MC28.

Restore your license if needed.
