I have always let my amp do the surround decoding - it is just fed with a stereo pair from the various sources DVD, VCR etc.
Is this still the best way to go as I will be building a HTPC soon. Does MC leave the channel data in the the stereo output streams? Should I be getting one hell of a stereo card (to output as stereo) or should I be getting a multi channel sound card (outputting for specific channels)?
BTW the amp/speaker setup I currently use is OLD (14 years - ok no THX, dolby digital etc) but was way expensive when I purchased it (top of the range yamaha amp, Monitor Audio and Mission speakers) and still sounds excellent now (everbody that listens is very surprised that it's 'only' dolby pro-logic).
I will be upgrading the amp (and maybe speakers) later next year.
Any advice and/or tech info appreciated.
Laffer.
