i am wanting to tinker with a Pi4 and JRiver.
Must connect via USB to my DAC, and support DSD (at least DSD128, but ideally DSD256)
I have JRiver running on a server so can do any conversion there, so could run the Pi4 as a renderer, what would the best software be?
Networking is 10GB/s from server to network switch, then 1GB/s to Pi4 so no limitation/risk of bottleneck.
Or do i run JRiver on the Pi4?

You could try RoPieee XL, very simple and effective ... you need to download Ropieee, flash a uSD, install it on rpi and update to RoPieee XL from RoPieee web interface.
But ... as of now with MC27 you can upsample just up to DSD64 using a dlna renderer (any)

As we speak, I've been doing some experimenting.
Originally I had MC 27 on my iMac with playback either through USB DAC or DLNA to my AVR/amp
I also tried MC27 on my Raspi 4 with the main library still on the Mac. I had the option of playing either through the Raspi HDMI or USB/DAC .
It worked OK. Then I tried having the Raspi as a stand-alone.
I have a 1TB SSD drive and I copied some of my Mac tunes onto it and now have the Raspi set up as a main server and output through the USB DAC. I use VNC Viewer software on my Mac to access MC 27 on the Raspi.
It, too has worked as expected.
I also am booting the Raspi with an SSD drive as the SD cards can be unreliable.
I had some fleeting audio dropouts here and there when the Raspi was a renderer but I didn't diagnose at the time and I haven't run across it since but it's not been long enough to judge. Not sure which way I'll go yet...it's coming down to convenience.

Here's a guide to installing JRiver on RPi:

What would be the best option as a headless renderer?
If I upscale at source to DSD128, is jriver on the pitch best or something else?
-
A Raspberry Pi isn't going to be powerful enough to handle upscaling (converting) to DSD128.

I have jriver on a server powerful enough to upscale, I would stream to the pi4.
