I think there was a thread about this a while back.  You might want to search back a few months.

Thanks I didn't noticed it.

I did a search and all I find within last 700 days is this:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=20999

I wouldn't call it a thread as this is a SINGLE post (ZERO comments)

I am not asking for MC plugin, I am just curious who of you chaps is using this service
and what do you think about it.

Now after little search I guess no one take care about it and this post will close the thread  :-X

Cheers

For the record, I care.   I think it sounds like an awesome idea.  One i thought i discovered yesterday and lo and behold found audioscrobbler had already been developed.

Sounds like a low priority item on this forum.  But here are my thoughts.  Its only a matter of time before all content is available online.  People will need more than a great organizer and player. They will need a guide to help them sort it out.  The same way people listen to the radio so the dj can pick out songs that they will probably like since they approve of the stations format and vote by listening or not listening to it.

It is my belief that if you gave the majority of listeners access to all the music in the world and gave them the ability to choose what they want to listen to, they would choose the same ten bands they listened to in highschool.

A targeted guide will be important when choices are endless and the choosers are timid.

just my .02

Sounds like a great idea, I used to do something like this with napster, I would do a search for a band that I really liked and then check out the libraries of people who had that band and see what stuff they had that I didn't.  I found out about some great bands that way.

Are there really people who only listen to ten bands?  Certainly not on this board I think ;)

Definitely a good idea and I too would like a MC plugin (so easy to say when it's not me building it).

You might want to checkout Yahoo! Launchcast, which lets you rate each song and adjusts your streaming playlist accordingly, the idea being that you build your own personal radio station.

Copy all files to the plugin directory.
Register MCScrobbler.dll.
Open Media Center go to tools>plugin manager and choose add plugin and point to MCScrobbler.dll.
Restart Media Center and you should see AudioScrobber in the plugin list.

Works great, it's pretty cool!  ;)

It just submits it to the server when the song start's playing. You can see what a person is currently playing.

Though, I'm curious why it's transmitting the Album Artist (Auto) instead of the Artist listed in the library ?  Anybody else having this happen, or is it just me?

So, to the dev of the plugin or anyone els, would it be possible to enter audioscrobbler directly from within MC? That would be super cool.

Gamer,
try doing it in commandline. Start dos and loacate the plugin polder (ie cd progam files\J river ...)

type regsvr32 MCScrobbler.dll when you in the folder.

check for spelling mistakes.

when using the run it might have to be in quotes, I'm not sure.

Is anyone using Last.FM in conjunction with audioscrobbler?

The streamed song does not pass through the tags - song name, title, etc.

Also, can you get your own personal stream thru Last.FM into MC?

It works as it should, though to get full benefit you have to have listened to at least 100 songs.  Otherwise it's too small a sample to build a "neighborhood".

Worked great for me 'til they had their big bang last week (they lost some files I suppose).

It's very interesting to see the results and watch your neighbour's taste. You will find your own music with a few more (maybe) unknown bands worth listening to. And the neigbours change the more tracks you're playing - with the broadband of your taste.

It's worth trying it.

Their website is back up and I can log into my account there, but my songs are gone.  Looks like they lost about 1200 profiles.  Oh well, I only had about 130 songs in there anyway. :)

My plugin is not able to connect at the moment.  Not sure if this is because of a Scrobbler problem, or if it is related to the new version of 11.  My guess is that it's an issue with the website.

There was some mention that they had to revert to a backup from Wednesday.  That may be why some older songs are showing up.

You know what would be really great?
MC counts how many times you play each song.
I have been using MC for a long time now, longer than audioScrobbler has been existing probably.
If we could dump our MC counts into our audioScrobbler profiles, the recommendations would be really accurate!

Anyone understands the innards of audioScrobbler well enough to say if this is possible?

Thanks

Rhino,

It would be great if you could make it somewhat user configurable.  Let the user select what % of a song must be played before sending the data.  Perhaps use MC's own song tracking to send the data (as suggested above by someone).

It could be a great addition.  Thanks.
Title: Re:www.Audioscrobbler.com
Post by: RhinoBanga on August 27, 2004, 11:58:52 pm
Here are the rules as defined by AudioScrobbler:

1) Each song should be posted to the server when it is 50% or 240 seconds complete, whichever comes first.
2) If a user seeks (i.e. manually changes position) within a song before the song is due to be submitted, submission should be cancelled.
3) Songs with a duration of less than 30 seconds, or more than 30 mimutes should not be submitted.

I'll add in overrides but don't be too suprised if the tracks don't get submitted.   Personally I think #3 sucks because I listen to tracks over 30 minutes all the time :(

Oh, and by the way it's almost done :D

Hi - well, at last I have found this thread !  I'm the audioscrobbler plugin author so now you know who to flame ;)  Been a bit busy so not had much time to follow up on this - although I do check the audioscrobbler site for comments.

Feedback so far seems pretty good - thanks.  Some of you seem to have had problems installing the thing : not really sure why - initially I think it was a MC packaging problem 'cos they just uploaded the ZIP and not the MJP info I gave them : hence all this regsvr32 stuff !  If the MJP doesn't work then I'm not sure why - seems to work on a couple of XP machines I've tried it with.

The problems I've seen people mention are :

- it submits video files as well as audio
  - I'll fix this, but I can't find a way to ask MC about the file type
(only the extension) so I'm gonna go for a solution where you
can tell it the extensions to use when submitting.  Not very nice,
so if anyone knows a better way...

- it sometimes submits the wrong artist.
  - I use the album artist method in the MC interface - not too clear
what I *should* be using (interface docs are pretty poor in places)
so I'll try a few things.

- auto-login
  - next version will have an option to disable this which will be useful
    for people on dialup connections.

- various other problems which are largely to do with the audioscrobbler
site itself having the problems that people have mentioned.  The plugin
only submits info to AS - what they do with that info is up to them.

So, I'm working on v0.2 - any other suggestions or problems I've missed ?

Also, do you think it's worth me continuing with it if RhinoBanga is
integrating AS into his Playing Now plugin ?

Thanks for the feedback,

Simon

I prefer you plugin. Partly 'cause RhinoBingo charge for playing now. I don't like pop-ups either. No offence RhinoBingo, I think your program is great and I used to use the upload feature, but pop ups just aren't my cup of tea.

Sime, for some reason the plugins dosen't work with MC11 -- at least at my computer.  Could you reupload the mjp?

Anyway great plugin I haven't had any problems

Hello,

I'm running sime_george's plugin, and I'm very happy with it. Just need to check this "various artists" situation  ;).

Simon, please continue development on your plug-in, it's great.

I'm using MC on a HTPC with TheaterView... I have no taskbar running, therefore I'm not using something like PlayingNow.

Take care,

Simon,
I second you continue work on the plugin, since I don't wanna pay for PlayingNow.

I was using it with MC 11 and it didn't work then.

I've since reverted to MC 9.1. The install doesn't work when downloading the plugin. I think it might be a problem with the .mjp file J river generates for your plugin.

Perhaps you need to be more verbose - I'm not sure if *.* will work; you may need to specify each file.

I would have thought you would have to explicitly copy the MCScrobbler.dll to the plugin dir and then register that too. eg:
File2=MCScrobbler.dll
File2Action1=COPY_PLUGINDIR
File2Action2=REGISTER

So I hacked an install myself.

=================

Anyway, the plugin doesn't work for me. As I said in a previous post, maybe I need to specify my proxy settings. The winamp plugin allows me to specify proxy settings, and that works.

Your plugin says "Submitting song info" but it never appears on my audioscrobbler page (but winamp entries do).

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but somehow i can't install the AS plugin. If i click on the link, i choose "open with Media Center". MC downloads the plugin and gives me confirmation that the plugin has been installed sucessfully.
If check in MC's plugin-Manager however and don't see any Audioscrobbler plugin  ?
I also checked in the plugins directory - nothing.

Can anybody help me out? is something wrong with the install package?

OK !  Version 0.2 has now been released and is ready for download  :D

Just to re-iterate, I have only tested this on MC version 10 (as specified when submitting the plugin).  I haven't got v11 yet as it's still in Beta and to be honest probably won't support v11 until it's finally released.

New in this version :

 - bug fixes (including correct artist !)
 - proxy support (hopefully !)
 - more configuration options

Let me know how you get on.

Should be in C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Plugins

(I assume you have windoze configured to show hidden & system files as it may be treating the DLL as one)

These install problems are very strange !  Works for me and at least 2 others I know.  Anyone have any ideas ?  MJP file is now :

Here's what I tried so far:

Downloaded the mjp File from the MediaCenter plugins page as well as from the audioscrobbler page. Tried to open the file directly with MC. MC starts downloading it and tells me that the plugin has been installed successfully. The plugin is not listed in the plugin-manager, however. The .dll is not in the plugins directory (i do see all the other .dll files).
If i download the .mjp file manually and install it (by double clicking the file) manually as Jim suggested, i get the same result.

Any new ideas. Has anybody succeed in installing the plugin yet?

Cheers, T.

I am starting to depair at all these installation problems :(  I have never had this much trouble trying to package a piece of software before - and I do this sort of this for a living !

I know of at least 2 other people who have managed to get both v0.1 and v0.2 installed directly from the MJP file so there is obviously "something" right with it.

Those of you who are experiencing problems please tell me the following :

- operating system
- MC version

Assuming the DLLs are unzipped correctly, you need to open a command prompt and "cd" to the plugin dir.  Then type "regsvr32 mcscrobbler.dll".  That's all the MJP file is supposed to do (hence my frustration at it seemingly not being able to do it reliably !).  If this reports any errors, try unregistering the old plugin first using "regsvr32 /u mcscrobbler.dll" and then registering it again.  If you still get errors, please post the error message here.

If you can't even find the DLLs on your system (and they should be in C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Plugins) then download the ZIP file directly using http://accessories.musicex.com/mediacenter/mc_data/plugins/731.zip and unzip into that directory manually.

Sorry for those of you who are experiencing problems.  I never anticipated that it would be this hard for what is essentially a trivial bit of software.

I successfully insalled it using the manual procedure though :-) now it runs like a charm :-) great plugin! Thank you for your effort.

I went through this manually and when I typed "regsvr32 mcscrobbler.dll" I get an error saying it's not there, But if I type regsvr32 "c:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11\Plugins\MCScrobbler.dll"

All is well and it works...

So, could that be why the mjp doesn't work? Because it's trying to register:
"regsvr32 mcscrobbler.dll" instead of:
regsvr32 "c:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 11\Plugins\MCScrobbler.dll"

I haven't tested it on MC11 so it could be that the installation process has changed slightly.  And yes, you will have to be in the plugin directory to register it (either by "cd"ing to the right place or by specifying the full path as you did).

Just setup v2 manually, works perfectly.  I for one am not too put out to have to manually install and I think you will finf that quite a few mc people are also inclined.  Although I am sure that it is frustrating to not get it working "100%".

FWIW I am running XP SP1 and MC 10 v161 and MC 11 v81.  Neither the first or second version of the plugin has worked using the mjp file.  Both versions worked perfectly once manually installed.  I am pretty sure that the mjp file never extracted the dlls on my system.

Thanks again for all of your hard work.  Especially on the allow certain files types to be sent portion of the plugin.

Hi Simon,
Version 0.2 looks much nicer!

Thanks for adding proxy support to audioscrobbler.
Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. What port for the proxy will it use? Most proxy config dialogs will have an option for the proxy name and proxy port; eg. IE and Firefox.

I still get Unable to handshake, sleeping.

Hi - proxy support is handled by libscrobbler which in turn gets Curl to do it.  You can specify the port in the proxy name after a colon, for example "myproxy:123" or "http://myproxy:123"

Try that and see how it works.

v0.2 has some extra controls which are useful if you're not on-line.  For example, disabling the auto-login will ensure that you don't get asked to connect to the net.  Also if you are on-line and logged in, you can disable the submission.

I think the feature you are asking for will not go down well with the audioscrobbler guys - someone suggested that "as MediaCenter keeps a track of how many times you have played a song anyway then why not use that info for AS" - but they didn't like that idea.  This feature seems to be along the same lines to me.  Lets say you'd played 100 songs and then went online : I'd have to then upload all that song data in one go.  Unfortunately, I think AS is targeted mainly at broadband always-on users.

You could always post your idea on the AS forums and see what they say.
