I browse by artist. When I add a new album it sometimes shows up as a different artist (see the picture). The only option I've found is to manually drag the artist into the preferred name of the artist on the sidebar. This means scanning through a long list to find them.
Is there an easier way of changing The National to National, The"?

if you go to tools>options>tree&view>sorting
if you check "ignore articles" it will sort the national under national
then you should select all "the national" and "national, the" and change them to "the national" (since that is the actual band name) but it will all sort properly

Appreciated.
What if one of the albums was called something wrong? Perhaps "The Narional"
Would there be a method of renaming it from that immediate area of the interface, without having to go into the sidebar/right clicking it/going down to rename?

In any list view, you can use the "slow" double click to edit.

also Alt-Enter brings up the tag interface on a file

This function does not work in that part of the interface, which is the problem. Hovering the mouse over that area shows a cycling display of tag information.

It's not a tagging issue. I can have two distinct albums in the interface shown in the screenshot while within all of the files are tagged as "The National".
The only solution I've found to combine them is to drag the incorrect version of the band onto the correct version over on the sidebar on the left. Unfortunately, as I have the bands sorted by "date imported", this means I have no idea where within that large list the correct band is.

I just noticed that DJ Shadow was under The National - assuming that's what you meant you should've said that :)
Is that what you mean? If so its unusual and must be tag related....
