Title: [EDIT - BAD CABLES] OTA HD TV is locking up JRiver
Post by: CZ Eddie on September 06, 2020, 11:39:28 pm
[EDIT - BAD CABLES]

New JRiver user & setup here.
I just set up TV for the first time.
I've been using WMC forever and it plays all five major HD channels fine.
With 5 or 6 out of 6 bars in the signal strength meter.

I had no issues getting MC to scan for channels and start playing them back.
But it's very choppy.
It behaves like it's got poor signal strength even though WMC on the same PC playing back-to-back has no issues.
And then the entire app usually locks up and I have to force-close.

I lowered RedOctober from HQ down to standard and am still having the issue.
What sort of troubleshooting steps can I take?

RTX 2060 Super GPU is only hitting 40% GPU usage while playing television in MC in standard quality.

I have no issues playing back a 1080p60 MKV using RedOctober HQ (or standard).

Oh, and channel 7.1 (FOX) always just says "waiting for signal lock" and then "no signal".
Bizarre.  WMC has 6 out of 6 bars for signal strength on this channel?

And I'm not pulling in any guide data even though I told it to use OTA for guide data and added my zip code.
I have not looked at that yet, so it may be a missed setting.  Just like all of this might be.

Edit:  I just discoved the built-in signal strength meter.
I'm getting a mimimum quality of 91 and the Strength is 100 across the board.
Except for channel 7.1 which says "not available".

Edit 2:  Enabling bitstreaming for HDMI seems to have smoothed out the standard quality video settings a lot.
I am unable to use HQ settings for television still.  It just freezes up.
Even though HQ works just fine for all MKV I play.

Are you using Red October HQ or did you customize it or add your own version of madVR?

Antivirus could cause problems.  There is a Windows Defender thread here.  Don't use other antivirus on Win10.

What is the tuner?

A channel could be missing if its frequency is wrong.  It happens occasionally.  You can edit it in MC.

Bad idea running WMC on the same PC as JRiver MC. Years ago I tried it for a while, and it's not recommended, to say the least. Conflicts galore, unless you go into WMC and disable ALL tuners while testing MC. If I were you, I would just disable/uninstall WMC altogether.

I was using custom MadVR settings that work fine for 1080P MKV but not JRiver live TV.
New Win10 LTSC builds, freshly formattted and all.
Three different PC's.  Two are 1st gen I5 and one is 9th gen I5.
I have not installed any 3rd party antivirus yet.
I already uninstalled WMC on one of them.
It was not installed on the other two, as they were "N" versions of Win10.

Channel 7 is behaving weird.
Sometimes I get "waiting for lock" when clickin on 7.1.
But if I start at channel 6 and use the channel-up button, then 7.1 plays fine.

If I do a channel refresh, then sometimes it doesn't find anything below channel 18.
Which there are like ten channels under 18 and all come in at high strength.

My tuner is HDHomeRun.  This one.
On a 1Gb LAN.

Does it work if you don't customize madVR?

It does not lock up jriver using default MadVR low settings.

So there is probably a problem with the settings you used, or perhaps with the version of madVR.  Try doom9 for help with madVR.

Please start a new thread for  the channel problem.  Check the frequency.
