Title: Free internet radio streaming in theater mode ?
Post by: ajowers on January 16, 2013, 04:54:32 pm
Is there a built in service where I can subscribe to free internet radio that I can play using theater mode?  If so, where is the tutorial on how to configure this ?

There are thousands of free streaming radio stations.  There are also aggregation services, such as Shoutcast, the list loads of these.  Often you have to suffer their short ads.

To add one, you need the web page or streaming URL.  Then you can customize Theater View, adding a web page.  Tools > Options > Theater View > Add > Web Page.  Enter the name for the web page, and try http://www.shoutcast.com/ for an example.

You could create a new Category, name it Streaming Radio, and nest your individual web pages here.

See also some of the websites listed under Audio > Connected Media.

I see, so there is no "dummy user" automation.  Its all manual.

I find the stream on the internet radio site and use "right-click -> save link as" to save it as an m3u playlist then add this to my library.

I can then tag it as an 'internet radio' Genre or create a Playlist of stations. This makes them easy to find in my Library

Now I can play it in Theater View just as I can in Standard View.

ok, in a round about way I came up with this url:
http://www.jazz901.org/assets/streams/jazz901Stream.m3u

now, I need to create a file and import the file into my library???

surely there is a better user interface than this guys come one.....

On my WDTV, it is completely menu driven "designed for ease of use"

We users like you can only provide you with ways of doing something; hopefully they will be of some value to you.

Some alternative methods:

 * Right click Audio > Connected Media and select Add Website.  Paste the URL.
 * File > Open URL, and paste the URL to start playback.  Then, add the currently playing item to a Playlist (which can be used in Theater View).

ok, I have one added.  In the future think about a cool interface with some sort of automation.  This will save you and someone else a question...

Just save the m3u in a folder that MC can reach and import it. I save mine in my Music folder, but not in my 'A' 'B' 'C' folders where my music files are located in Artist/Album folders.

For streaming media where the web site has multiple streams (like Shoutcast) I use the Connected Media section to access the webpage and then click the stream I desire.

Not ideal perhaps, but it works.
