Title: Installation on my new MacBook Pro
Post by: ehadzipetros on December 04, 2016, 08:43:04 am
I'm trying to install JRiver Media Center 22 on my new MacBook Pro. I downloaded the dwg file, double-clicked and it appeared to installed. JRiver loaded and I was able to enter my permanent master registration code. Problem is JRiver doesn't show up in LaunchPad or in my applications folder. It never seems to actually install beyond the dwg file. I have to double click the install file each time I run JRiver and it appears to install and loads JRiver and it appears to be registered. But it never shows up in Launchpad or Applications and every time I run it I have to install it again.

What am I doing wrong? How do I install it?

You have to open the .dmg file, and drag and drop Media Center 22 into the Applications folder and run it from there. There should be a shortcut to the Applications folder when opening the .dmg - just drag Media Center 22 into it. That will install it into the proper Applications directory.

Thank you that helped. It's permanently installed now. I am having other issues that I should report to support. Don't know if they're bugs with the Mac version or something specific to my machine and/or set up. It crashes a lot when I try to do simple things like delete imported playlists, reset the log under Help, report a problem under Help, or try to change Device Settings under Tools > Options.

I suspect all issues are related. Symptoms are the same. The program crashes and an Apple Report pops up with information on the crash. I've been using JRiver steadily on my PC for several years and rarely had a crash there. I really want to get it working consistently on my Mac.

What version are you using?  22.0.43 is at the top of this board.

I'm using 22.0.43, downloaded from this site. Here's the Apple dump triggered when it crashed when I tried to change Device Settings in Tools > Options.

Ensure "analyze audio" is switched off in auto import settings in Library and Folder options. See if that makes it more stable.

Analyze Audio for audio and video files are both turned off. Media Center still crashes under same conditions.

Hi I had same issues for about 2 weeks and with help of some of the members I think I have the problems resolved as of this morning. Will do further testing.  I disabled autoimport settings from tools and options.  There are 3 check marks.  I unchecked all three, restarted the computer and I got it to work.
Title: Re: Installation on my new MacBook Pro
Post by: ehadzipetros on December 05, 2016, 09:24:06 am
I disabled the Auto Import and all three options in the Auto Import option dialog and restarted my computer. Media Center still crashes when I do things like click on Device Settings in Tools > Options, try to delete imported Playlists, or click Report a Problem in Logging under Help.

I can play songs but if I do any of those three things, Media Center crashes. I haven't tried doing other stuff but I suspect this will happen with other features.

So this is obviously a reported issue. I'm not the only one. Clearly there's a bug here. Is it the operating system ... Mac OS Sierra 10.12.1? Or is the problem with the new MacBook Pro's? Any estimate on when this bug may be fixed? It's frustrating ... I paid for a master license before v.22 was released because I love this product and am looking forward to using it on new Mac.

All options in Auto-import are turned off. It still crashes under the same conditions I already reported.

Same crash issues here on new Macbook Pro with touchbar. Didn't have these problems running on 2013 Macbook Pro with same exact JRiver settings and version.

Can't open DSP or any device related settings. Can't play video. Results in immediate program exit.

At least now I know it's not just me.

I just tried again. I first did a clean uninstall then reinstalled, turned off automatic import, went into tools > options and turned off all the automatic import checkboxes under Library and Folders. Rebooted and tried again.

Selected Help > Logging > Enable Logging. Exited from Help menu, went back in to Help, and select Logging > Report a Problem. Again it crashed and generated an Apple Error report and a Media Center log.

Both are attached. Anybody from JRiver have any ideas? It's a brand new MacBook Pro 2016 with Intel HD 530 and AMD Radeo Pro 460. MacOS Sierra 10.12.1.

I've been faithfully buying these licenses on Windows since v.18. I really want to use it on my new Mac.

I just had a thought ... Might it be FileVault ... It's turned on by default during Mac set-up.

I've tried all the same things as you on my new 13" Macbook Pro with touchbar running the latest version of Sierra but JRiver still crashes repeatedly on many different activities. This doesn't happen on my 2013 13" Macbook Pro running the same version of Sierra and JRiver. Seems like JRiver may not compatible with the latest Macbook Pro hardware for some reason but not sure why.

Interesting. There seem to a number of people with the new MacBook Pro's who are having the same issue. Are there any JRiver support people monitoring this? When can we expect an explanation or a fix?

Is the issue only isolated to new Macbook Pros with touchbar?

Is the issue only isolated to new Macbook Pros with touchbar?

I have a 2013 Macbook Pro and a new Macbook Pro with touchbar.  As stated previously, both laptops are running the latest Mac OS and JRiver versions. They both use the same JRiver network library.

The new Macbook Pro has crash problems only on JRiver software.

The 2013 Macbook Pro does not have these problems with JRiver software.

Everybody here who's having the problem has a new MacBook Pro with touch bar. I do too. There may be one 13 inch MacBook Pro without the touch bar. I've already uploaded a bunch of dump files from both Apple and Media Center. There should be some clues in there. The good news here is that there seems to be some consistency to this failure.

So add me too the list!

I have the same problem on my MacBook Pro touchbar with M22.0.43. It always crashes with

Exception Type:        EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes:       KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000020
Exception Note:        EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

even if I just want to change the language after start. I had no problems with my old MacBook Pro. So far it is unusable for me. I had the same problem if I downgraded to M21.

That’s the error I get. Sounds like this might be an issue with the new MacOS 10.12.1.

I'm running MC21 and it worked fine on Sierra 10.12.1 but started crashing with 10.12.2.
I spent an hour with Apple tech support and no resolution.  I just have to listen on an older Macbook I have which runs fine even with the latest OS X version installed. As a matter of fact. It runs fine on two other Macs, a 2013 MBP and a 2012 mac mini.

I don't know what else to try.  I will d/l a version of MC22 but I'm sure that is not going to help.

I tried the last 3 JRiver releases of version 22 and then tried the last release of version 21. They all have the exact same crash issues on my new Macbook Pro. I also tried the last 2 versions of Sierra. Same issues.

Whatever the problem is, seems to be unique to JRiver software on the new Macbook Pro. The same JRiver and Sierra versions runs fine on my 2013 Macbook Pro.

I suspect this won't be fixed soon.

I'm afraid you may be right.

Based on my limited testing of other software on the new Macbook Pro, the issue seems to be unique to JRiver so it will probably have to be fixed by them.

This is the third or fourth time in the last year that we've had a crash on a new version of OSX or iOS.

Each time, MC or JRemote was working fine until the OS upgrade and then it didn't.

I know these seem like JRiver bugs, but I don't think they are.

It would be worth reporting the problem to Apple.

Title: Re: Installation on my new MacBook Pro
Post by: jimm2 on December 15, 2016, 07:33:57 pm
Based on my testing, I don't think it's related to any OS upgrade. For me, JRiver runs fine on the same OS versions on the older Macbook Pro hardware.

Can you help us understand your approach on this stuff Jim? In my experience, other Mac software providers test their products to work on new apple upgrades. If your product doesn't run on the platform you're selling it for, what should buyers expect from JRiver?
Title: Re: Installation on my new MacBook Pro
Post by: JimH on December 15, 2016, 08:12:23 pm
Testing isn't useful until the final release of an OS, since OS problems often get fixed.

We can't fix it until it's broken, and sometimes the OS developer fixes it first.
Title: Re: Installation on my new MacBook Pro
Post by: jimm2 on December 15, 2016, 08:44:24 pm
Seems to be a misunderstanding. Mac OS Sierra 10.12.1 was been released to the public in October and JRiver doesn't work with this version on the new Macbook Pro hardware.

On the older Macbook Pro's, your software works with 10.12.1 and the latest version 10.12.2 so it doesn't appear to be an issue with an OS revision.

Are you saying you don't plan to test your software with public releases of Mac OS?

I'm hoping that JRiver is planning to test with the new MacBook Pro 2016 with touch bar. Sounds like that's where the issue is rather than the MacOS.

I've been a big fan of MC for several years. And have been loyally buying licenses for upgrades each year. I was looking forward to run it on my new Mac. I'm considering alternatives now because I can't run it.

I'm a dev team lead at a fast growing software company. When our customers complain we jump to fix our product, even though we always have lots of other stuff on our plates. I'm hoping that this gets resolved soon.

We try to do the same, but it's not always possible.  Apple doesn't provide free equipment for us to test so we wait to see if they fix it.

Are you using a non-standard skin?

Matt, are you using one of the new MacBook Pro 2016s (that has the touch bar)? It only happens specifically on those systems, it seems.

Otherwise MC22 is running fine on 10.12.2 here.

JRiver runs fine for me on Sierra 12.1 or 12.2 on the older Macbook Pro's.

Like others, I'm only having issues on the new Macbook Pro with touchbar. It crashes on many different activities on this hardware, doesn't matter if it's Sierra 12.1 or 12.2 or JRiver v22 or v21.

JRiver is the only software I've installed that has compatibility issues with the new hardware.

You've said that before, but it does not rule out a bug in the OS or in a driver.

It could be a bug in JRiver, but the fact that it ran fine before the change of hardware makes it seem unlikely.

I do not think that this is an MacOS 10.12 problem. I run MC22.0.43 on MacOS 10.12.2 on my old MacBook Pro with absolute no problem, but when I upgraded to a clean install (without any firewall or other similar protection settings) to my new MacBook Pro touch I can't get MC22.0.43 run without an immediate crash after almost any command chosen from the menu (such as e.g. "Tools >> Language >> German" or "Tools >> Options >> Audio >> Device Settings"). Thus there is no chance to use it.

It could be a bug in JRiver, but the fact that it ran fine before the change of hardware makes it seem unlikely.

Apple usually doesn't have any scruples to change something in their OS/Hardware that requires software changes, so I would say its quite likely that they don't care if something broke and expect software vendors to fix it.

Add another to the list of those experiencing crashes of MC21.0.80 (and then upgraded MC22.0.43) on new MacBook Pro TouchBar running macOS10.12.1. Same versions of MC ran fine on 2013 MacBook Air with macOS10.12.1.  Interestingly enough, HDtracksDownloader by JRiver also crashes only on MacBook Pro.  Apple support provided no help, basically dropped ball in developer's court as being an application issue.

OK, have you tried this with the dmg file:

Right Click on the dmg installer file and click on "open with DiskImageMounter.app"
Look on the left side bar to see where the disk Image Mounter is loaded.
Then click on it. It should open a window with the application. Drop the application file into the application folder and then run the file from te application folder and see what happens.

Hope this helps.
