Title: MC crashes upon right click [Solved]
Post by: andrewberg on June 20, 2017, 01:57:29 pm
I have MC installed on an older machine (Dell Latitude 810 running WinVista), but the program crashes every time I right click inside a category or list view. Just to mention, this never happens on my other laptop that runs Vista as well... Could this be related to an older graphic driver?

I have created log files for support (see ZIP attached)... hoping you find a solution. Thanks!

Edit (24th June): As I can see, my support file has been downloaded, so PLEASE remember to look into it, then post your findings here! Thank you.

Dear 'supporters',

this is just to remind that the problem still persists (see first posting)! Can anyone help, please?

Regards, A.

In the log, you're using 22.0.108.  There is a newer build on this board.  It's worth trying.

But the problem is more likely specific to your hardware.  Take a look at other software running.  A mouse driver like Logitech software might cause it.  Antivirus or pop-up software, too.

I wonder, could skinning software like WindowBlinds cause that too? If so, it's worth mentioning too.

I think I fixed a right-click crash in a recent build, so please give it a try.

Finally, thank you all for getting back on this... (Did the word 'support' ring the bell? I was going to rename subject line to "Is this support?" but that one already exists... ;-)

So, in terms of other software, only the 'Desktop Sidebar' and latest Firefox were running during crash events (logged by Windows Event Viewer as "application errors", resp.). There is no Logitech driver, antivirus, or skinning software installed -- but what do you mean by "pop-up software"?

Meanwhile, I will try out another skin in MC, and if that fails install that later build (although existing is pretty new)... then post results here. Thank you again!

I think I fixed a right-click crash in a recent build, so please give it a try.

I can see no such fix in your changes listed at "Media Center 22.0.110 for Windows -- Available here"... (By the way, my previous version was 22.0.108, so fairly recent as well.)
Anyway, I have now tried this latest build, but it keeps crashing whenever I right-click anywhere!
Everything else works fine though, including all menus! I've tried using other skins, e.g. standard 'Noire', but it keeps crashing...

Any other suggestions I might try? Thank you in advance!

Would you try MC23?  And if it still crashes, post a crash zip again and I'll take a look.

Thanks.

Well, once it is available, perhaps... ;-) However, I am not using that old laptop very often (only during summer on the balcony ;-), so might as well manage without right-clicking for another while... Also for that reason, I don't feel like testing about too much. If the cause of crashes can be found and resolved, fine, but I'm not desparate for new versions (as they mostly relate to TV support which I don't need)...

MC23 is available.

Well, that would still mean buying a license, on vague hopes that version 23 resolves my particular issue (the changes log mentions no 'right-click' or crash')... Not very tempting I'm afraid...

If you gave me a beta testing license though, I'll definitely have a go! ;-)

You get a free 30 day trial, so just give it a quick try.

Thank you Matt, I could do that. How do I 'redeem' that one?

Just install and run MC23 and it'll go into the trial automatically.

(Of course, I hadn't thought of that... ;-) Still, there's no incentive, is there, if I'm only installing the new version to help you find a certain bug?

Mainly to see if the crash issue still exists in MC23, so Matt can look into it (since MC22 development has ended).

Yes, I did understand that part... But again, since 22's final build crashed on me (although Matt mentioned a similiar issue was fixed, but appears not in 23's changelog) the bug might still exist...

Anyway, I guess it's just my old laptop hardware, some unknown driver incompaibility etc... So maybe I better replace the bloody old thing (the cooling fan is much too loud also ;-)...

I'm having the same issue, and I'm not using an old laptop either. I have a dedicated HP Pavilion workstation just for MC, with quad-core, 8GB RAM and Radeon R5-240.

This setup has served me well for almost two years, up until that last few releases, when I started experiencing the right-click crash issue.

Tonight, I upgraded to a brand-new Seagate 2TB drive and ran a clean Windows 10 install. Very little in the way of other programs/drivers installed at this point, however, Windows is up-to-date and the latest AMD Crimson driver (AMD self-detect, so it chose the right one).

I loaded 22.0.108 and the problem seemed to move to my new installation. I saw this post and installed 22.0.110.  Same thing -- any right-click crashes MC. I removed the AMD Crimson/Catalyst driver package and reverted to stock Windows AMD driver -- no difference. Very annoying.

Just for kicks, I rolled back to 22.0.54 (the most recent version I have on file), and it's rock solid!  No right-click crash.

So this proves that something's changed recently that's causing this problem.  What I want to do is roll back to the most recent version I can find that doesn't crash, since you're not supporting 22 anymore.

Is there an archive for downloading past versions of MC?  Something more up-to-date than 22.0.54 hopefully?  I was very happy with the product as it was, until this started happening.

Thanks in advance

OK, so I saw a post on this forum, where a guy had the same problem and restored a library backup from a previous version and it worked.

So I reinstalled 22.0.110 again and restored a library backup from my music server (22.0.108) with the same setttings, and it seems to have cleared the problem for now.  I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if it's stable.

Thanks.
