Title: JRemote and NordVPN?
Post by: juridicus on July 16, 2019, 07:47:03 am
I'm very new to JRiver MC and really enjoying it. I have it installed on my iMac at home, which I managed to set up as a server and can stream to JRemote on my phone outside the home network. The only problem is that I use NordVPN on my home computer and I cannot get the remote streaming to work if the VPN is connected (even if I use a dedicated IP). Works fine when I disable it.

Is there any way to stream remotely while a VPN like Nord is enabled on the device being used as a server? I've searched around but can't find a solution. Thanks.

You likely have to forward ports (e.g. port 52199) for the VPN - not many VPN providers give port forwarding options.

You need a VPN that offers split tunnelling, which allows you to specify a list of applications that are allowed to operate outside of the VPN. Not many of them do this either. I tried one. It was really bad. I got my cash back under their 30 day trial, money back offer. I think they were called PureVPN.

If NordVPN gives the option, try setting the active protocol to OpenVPN over UDP.

That is the only config that allows me to get through to MC from the outside whilst the VPN connection is active.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like Nord just doesn't support port forwarding so I'll have to disable it when I want to stream remotely :(

Thats not so much about port forwarding and more about firewall rules. I got something similar'ish to work on Linux using openvpn with nordvpn. The way I set that up is reject every outgoing connection, except for 1194 for the vpn connection and that way you can ensure stuff goes threw the vpn. Im sure the nordvpn app also does that. So you will need to allow the internal ip of your jriverbox somehow or the outgoing package will be blocked.

If thats not possible with the app, you can use openvpn client on windows and mac too. But its gonna be more likely that packages are leaked outside the vpn connection without proper firewall setup and proper firewall setup will mean you have to undo your firewall setup when you dont want to use the vpn. (Thats what the app does for you too, it just does in in a way you dont have to think about these things, since just turning it on results in that happening)

But without any special config the openvpn client should at least still let you connect to pcs in your local network.
