Is it possible to make playlists that look like the pane view?

Not necessarily with the various sorting windows at the top, but in Pane view each album pops up with one large cover and all the songs next to it.

In playlist view its just one long list with small record cover icons next to each track.

Not exactly, but kinda.  You can build a Panes view that has Playlists as one of it's Panes.  Then, when you select a playlist, you get to see the playlist Panes style.  If you use "group by > album", then you'll get the large album thumbnail next to the tracks.

Note that you won't see your playlist in order; it will be alphabetical by artist, as is normal when you group by album.  This is kind of a cool view to have for maintenance.  I build big playlists of many albums and this is one way of seeing which albums are in the big playlists.

You can also set your List Style to "album thumbnails" in this kind of Panes view.  That will just give you album covers, with no song details at all.  For me, this is very useful.  Not sure if you'd like it or not.  See two attached screen shots for these two modes in a Panes view with Playlists.
