I am still on 17. Can I buy an upgrade to 19 without any issues having skipped 18?
Thanks.

Yes, you can upgrade directly from 17.
-
What are the feature upgrades from MC18. If they are video based, they won't be necessary for my setup. Any changes to GIZMO, DLNA, or audio streaming features.
Thanks.
-
So I have purchased the upgrade to MC19 and received my registration code.
Will I have to put it in my current MC18 installation or wait for the release of MC19?
-
It's too early to say exactly what features will be included. MC18 had improvements in both Gizmo and DLNA. I would expect more of the same. If you're not sure, just wait until you see something that you like.

If you have previously licensed MC18, there is nothing to do until MC19 is available. If not, then use the MC19 license with MC18. It works with both.
-
Hi Jim. I purchased MC19 from a different computer than where my MC18 is installed. When MC19 comes out will it automatically update to the new MC19?

How about a hint? Any NEW features? I'd love to give you some money. ;D

Jim:
I just bought the upgrade license and am still waiting for your visit to Portugal.
Kind regards,
Joao

If you plan to release the upgrade in a month, that means you have probably locked in the feature set of the upgrade. You should be able to tell us who are pre-ordering what we are paying for. This is not good marketing. You have not told us the benefits of paying for the upgrade. My apologies, my mind-reading abilities are not what they used to be.
1. Provide a list of a locked-in feature set of the upgrade.
2. Provide a link to the list so customers can make a decision to buy the upgrade or pass.

We work on each version for about a year. MC19 is just starting, and we don't have a locked-in feature set. Sorry.
We offer a discount for pre-ordering, but if you're not comfortable with that, just wait and see.
-
Just bought mine ;D
What's on the menu this year?? bratwurst again?
Looking forward to the new features whatever they are.
-
The purchase of MC18 didn't include MC19, just the updates for MC18?
Thank you in advance

You purchased an MC18 license about one year ago. It is good for all MC18 builds, including the one that went out this morning.
MC19 would be an (optional) upgrade. If you do it now, you'll get the special pre-order price.
-
Purchased the JRiver 19 upgrade and clicked on the registration code and it stated that the registration was a success. However I have a previously registered jRiver18 already installed.Does it overwrite the old code and does this mean it will now upgrade to version 19 seamlessly or doI have to download 19 when it is released and re-enter the code?
-
Just read the email I got when I purchased "Just save the Install Key on a floppy disk" lol for such a bleeding edge program, the email is a bit dated. Does anybody actually use them anymore ?
-
I just purchase 18 about a month or so ago...had I known a newer version was just around the corner I might have waited for the latest edition...
-
Hi,
I just bought (2 hours ago) my first JRiver software after first trying out the version 18 for 5 days.
My proof of purchases says that I have bought version 19. It says
Thank you for your purchase of Media Center 19 Windows from JRiver, Inc. for $39.98.
Your Registration Code is 92UY0-....-....-....-....-.....
This is your permanent proof of purchase. Print this e-mail now and keep it in a safe place.
How is the upgrade organised?
Regards,
Danny
MC19 releases will be available in a month or two.
Purchase through the Help menu in MC19. The price is currently $18.98.
If you have already purchased MC18, but would like to purchase an upgrade now, please see the instructions below.
To get the special upgrade price of $18.98 (normally $26.98), pre-order using this webpage:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC19
Please post any questions in this thread.

I bought the upgrade 2 hours ago, but PayPal didn't redirect me back to your page. Now I've paid $18,98 USD and didn't get any confirmation e-mail. Is my purchase lost?
I can give you the PayPal transaction code and my registration code, but I guess it wouldn't be very clever to post it here.
What shall I do now?
-
I got the e mail for the upgrade offer, filled in my registration code from MC18 and when I got to the payment page the price was $39.98. Any suggestions? Thanks. ?
-
I upgraded and promptly got a error message - "Error restoring Media Center License: Unknown Error.

Never mind, I did the same thing last time, there was a period at the end of the numerical code because I copied and pasted from an e mail...removing the period I got the correct price of 18.98. ;D

The upgrade cost is reasonable, but I just purchased my license for v18 in January and less than a year later I need to upgrade? Doesn't seem quite right. You would think you could have updates for a year before needing to buy a new license. I am going to upgrade because I saw how quick 17 was dropped when 18 came out so you really want to upgrade, but it seems like upgrading in less than a year is not quite right. Just my opinion, I am happy with v18 but I definitely want too get updated features, even if you can't give a roadmap of what you plan on putting in 19.

I hope MC19 is focused on improving the movie-video-TV playback/experience. I came over with/for the Red October announcement/integration (LAV and MadVR).
Well, whatever JRiver does with 19, it will be good.
-
What are the new features of Media Center 19? I think is a good idea to know before we upgrade..
I hope that can provide support for BD menues!

We have no list yet.
To answer CountryBumpkin's post, it is my opinion that we have a very good position in audio, but our position in video, HTPC, TV, and home networking is just outside the market's attention. It's there that we need to focus this version. Sonos and Airplay are nice, but MC has a lot more capability if we can polish and smooth the rough edges.
But this is now Matt's decision to make. Send him your chicks, puppies, and kittens.

You don't need to upgrade. MC18 is perfectly fine. It also will probably be several more months before MC19 is a better overall experience than MC18.
-
A suggestion you might want to consider for next time in the quest to ever improve customer warm and fuzzy feelings (as an alternative to sending them baby chicks) :)
Don't entice customers to purchase an "old" license (MC18) with a $5 discount, approx. 30 days (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=80793.0) before offering a license for a new version (MC19). As small as the difference is, it just rubs the wrong way to pay $44.98 (MC18 discount price) + $18.98 (MC19 discount upgrade price) = $63.96 to get a MC19 license that is $49.98 (list price) 30 days later if one didn't have a need to purchase and use MC at the time of the late May promotion and was encouraged to do so by a promotion.
Just my 2c :)

Wow, seems like a lot of folks are jumping through hoops to pay for this update without any hints as to what new features to expect... ?
-
I'd like to see it easier to use on Tablet versions of Win8 (eg on a surface). Theater view works, but could use some tweaking ... and when you go back out to non theater view the menu items are pretty small to access (on a tablet with high res desktop) with a finger. Needs to have the full "Metro" front end.
It works beautifully on my Surface pro: out thru the new meridian Explorer to my Sennheiser headphones is great.
When I back out of theater view to do anything, I pretty well have to use a stylus on the desktop version. Would be nice to be able to access all the features via a metro front end.
-
Wow, seems like a lot of folks are jumping through hoops to pay for this update without any hints as to what new features to expect... ?
that's because we want to support development. I for example bought a mc18 licence on day one but still use mc17 on my htpc.
-
Just bought the upgrade. Hope to see my #1 feature request implemented in MC19:
Store the .jpg and .xml files in a separate folder on the hard drive(s). :-*
-
Jeez you guys are wingers. Its $19 for petes sake. Bought mine. Thanks. Think of it as insurance for the future. $19 is a pittance compared to the thousands I have thrown at my HTPC.
-

the guys do a lot of work on the workings of this program and help people sort out problems, tell me what store does this.
I personally think they deserve a medal.

Well said by maid and thezone. Some of us have been doing this for ten years or more, and J River haven't let us down yet...
though if you have a plasma and were waiting patiently for the image retention protection feature in theater view, you might argue with me ;)
Thing is though, there are other ways to prevent that, so it shouldn't be a deal breaker of any kind, and one day, it'll just get slipped in there on the QT...
They have a very unique way of doing things, it works, so more power to them.
-marko
-
I had just paid for the pre-order..
so what happen now? I had received the registration code...
can someone shade some light...
I hope the MC19 will be much simpler...
So that I don't have to switch between wasapi and asio..

I'm with maid and thezone too. For me, the upgrade's around the cost of a 6-pack (ish ... dang if only Ben Bernanke had kept his mouth shut. The US$ strengthened at the hint of a back pedal on QE but nothin' doin') - all good. Well worth the preinvestment. Keep it up guys ... ;D

Read the threads above and in the thread announcing MC19, you'll find that your rego code will work for MC18 and when MC19 is released, you'll be covered for its rego into the bargain. However, you'll have to wait. MC19 hasn't hit the streets yet.
Check back through the history here on Interact and you'll see that this is the J River standard delivery method for a new release and there's virtually the same round of queries in a rather deja vu / Groundhog Day kind of fashion.
You can feel reassured in that you've made a wise investment.. 8)
-
v19 purchased. You guys make the best Media Centre software ever, you'll have my continued support every year :)
-
Well yes MC is an awesome program and yes that's a cheap upgrade, but it's a pig in a poke. Paying for the upgrade now with no known new features is about as good an investment as taking the money and betting on the horses. It's all marketing spin.
Early builds will resemble MC18, and will improve throughout the year. Before MC19 finishes, it will be faster, easier to use, more powerful, and better looking than MC18
and that statement above from the announcement takes the cake. The seond sentence effectively says that before we ask you to shell out again for v20 the current version will be faster and better looking that it is now. Those improvements could be delivered in 20 years time for all we know (before you all jump on me I understand it's more likely v20 will be in the next year or so)
I for one won't be speculating my $19 despite many, many years of dependable quality.
-
OK its a tiny bit of a gamble but purchased it anyway (long history of great upgrades) ;)
-
For last years $18.95 "upgrade" fee, JRiver took away the option of downloading MiniView skins. Any chance that this years "upgrade" fee will restore what MC 12-17 had to offer and if not, what will we be losing with this year MC 19 for $18.95?
Seeing how I've already prepaid my yearly dues as usual, I guess I'll be finding out and it'll probably be the hard way like last year when silence was golden on this forum when it was asked many times about loss of MiniView skin options.
In response to "thezone", your "$19 for Pete's sake" every year for me has added up to around $152,,, for Pete's sake. Then again my insurance company keeps taking away from my policy while the yearly premium continues to rise. Must be a Best Business practice thingie. hahahahahaha
Cheers,
Robin

I bought mine too, keep up the good works!
Whatever the features will be, I'm sure they will be valuable. (even if, as a lot of us, I'm impatient to know what you are cooking for us)
-
While I understand people's desire for a list of features that will be in v19 I look at it from a different point of view. The fact that there is no feature list means that we, the users, have the ability to influence what will be included (even if does sometimes require transporting livestock halfway around the world!). I don't see Microsoft, Apple or anyone else for that matter giving their customers that level of interaction.
To put this in perspective, I work as a software developer on a piece of software that cost each of our customers thousands per year and I bet they wish it was as reliable, reactive and cheap as MC. In fact I am constantly amazed that MC can be released hundreds of times per year with very few serious issues ever being reported while at the same time the developers make themselves available as front-line support as well.
I don't know what your secret is Matt, Jim et al but for me a few dollars a year to be along for the ride is a very small price to pay :)
-
To me, the only thing I like is to take into consideration the people who have the latest version against people with obsolete versions when putting upgrade pricing. I have gone through the following versions: 11,12,14,15,16,17,18 and now the 19 and I pay the same as someone who does not upgrade from 11. ?
-

Yes but purchasing all those licences has meant you have had a much better MC experience for the last 5 years than those who stuck with v11, that's what you were paying for.
If there's a piece of software out there that's better overall value money when you take into account all the new features, support etc. I would like to see it.

I upgraded and promptly got a error message - "Error restoring Media Center License: Unknown Error.
I've the same problem. My version is MC 16.
What have I to do?
Thanks.

"We stopped selling MC18 licenses on July 1, so if you purchase from inside MC18, you'll get an MC19 license"
I bought my (first) licence for MC18 on July 4th and indeed the filename suggests it is an MC19 licence. I still received an email to upgrade. Will I have to pay for the upgrade if my licence is already for MC19?
-
For me, even if MC19 doesn't deliver heap loads of features that are valuable to me, I still don't grudge buying the licence because this piece of software is amazing, so much so that I never want to see it disappear or development stop, so the upgrade price is a small sacrifice on my part.. There will inevitably be new features that will suit me.. Keep up the great work dev team, if only there were more companies like this one..

No, you're good to go for MC19.

I just tested your registration code (ending with "1H8") and it worked Ok here. Do you need to disable a firewall? Media Center communicates with our server during the license install. I've sent you an email with your registation code to make sure you're using the right one.

FJV and MK2013,
Make sure you have 18.0.206 or above installed. Older versions of MC18 won't work with an MC19 license.

Thank you for your support!

Just purchased Media Center 19. I'm using 17 now and this is my first update. I'm still trying to figure out how it works. Should I leave the update setting on stable? Are there "idiot" support options? Through trial and error I believe I've optimized my audio path to get the best response when I play 96khz 24 bit downloads. I appreciate the validation of the DSP lighting up, but wish the wikis had more about how to get the best sound and response. I also wonder if I will ever be able to get DISH DVR to work with Media Center? I generally blame myself, but support seems thin for us novices and the discussions on topics I want to know basics on often veer into programming issues and formats I don't use. I really like you product and feel I could get a lot more out of it, if I could figure out how to use it.

Download MC18 now and install it. Restore your license.

When MC19 builds are available, just install one. The license will work.

Wow, seems like a lot of folks are jumping through hoops to pay for this update without any hints as to what new features to expect... ?
You would think you were talking about spending a fortune, fer Crissake! It's 18 bucks and change, or a little more than ONE Hi Res download, for a feature rich, quality application that has proven out it's value for many people for YEARS.
The improvements are constant, the updates are constant, the software is never static, the customer service and tech help are excellent.
This happens every time an upgrade is offered, so I guess I'm not surprised, but it gets tiring ?.
-
I am a little confused as I have purchased the update but I don't see anything in the current version to process and update. It references a month or two so are we in essence buying it now but we will be notifiy in a month or two on the actual update?
-
If you want to improve your standing in video and TV to become a complete media center I think you should:
- Get 3D movie support
There are popping up a lot of 3rd party content providers (netflix, hbo, spotify, wimp ++)
You should make a good way to integrate with these - from what I see (from Norway) the Netflix integration does not work.
Also - better TV support, still not possible to view Canal Digital in Norway...
-
Include support for IPTV (DVB-IP) ( http://www.skytide.com/products/iptv-providers-list (http://www.skytide.com/products/iptv-providers-list) ), and you'll get my money for MC19,20,21... ;)

That's correct. It's explained here:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Upgrade_to_MC19
and in the newsletter (Pre-order...).

(@Admins: this post shouldn't be moved elsewhere, it belongs to this topic and the question was not answered...):
... I would have expected some more serious development for version 18, incl. bug fixes!
For my experience, the new GUI renderer introduced in v.18 caused lots of new issues (such as windows/dialogues not receiving proper focus) that would need to be fixed, and some lost features (e.g. scrolling player bar title text) that should first be restored to make v.18 worth its price!
I think it's a little bold to make us pay again before these current version issues are resolved; remember we're NOT talking about new features, but pending fixes. Can we be sure these issues are at least being addressed in the new version?
-
My 2 cents....if one is announcing that an upgrade will be rolled out in "a couple of months" but doesn't give the users ANY sense of what they plan on changing or improving then only a schmuck would roll over and say here's my $$. Honestly, users have every right to have an outline of intended features, improvements, additions, changes, etc., that they can expect. Having been in the business world for over 40 years I could never conceive of saying we'll do something and that early versions will be as good as what you have now....
-

This forum is just chock full of schmucks.
Pre-order MC... all of these schmucks can't be wrong.
-
My name is Ken... I'm a schmuck...
Seriously... I have never seen so much negativity for a company offering a discounted OPTIONAL upgrade offer.
Nobody is twisting arms, 18 will work forever. They offer a 30 day trial to see if ya like the software.
This is how they operate.. I love it...
Ken

I'd just like to say thanks to everyone that has pre-ordered so far.
Friday and Saturday will go down as our best sales days ever (by a lot).
I don't want to be mushy and pathetic, but it means a lot to me personally.
It also means a lot to JRiver, because your support and MC's growing momentum are going to allow us to do some exciting things together over the next couple years.
Thank you everyone.

Thank you, I will. (Although I had considered these issues as 'reported' - see post above - and merely quoted them to support my point...)
Anyway, do you see a chance for my main concerns (window focus, title scrolling) to be resolved still within version 18? Because if not I might just roll back to v.17 which in these respects worked better for me... (and perhaps keep watching the development then upgrade to some future version ;-)

We always make every effort to fix a reproducible problem. So please report the issue in the build threads until it's fixed. Thanks.

MC is a GREAT product, I use it to setup for my radio show, and have recommended it to our station (KVMR-FM), all of our broadcasters, and show it to every new broadcaster that I help train! I upgraded to MC18 on 5/22/13 and just got the email on pre-purchase of the upgrade to MC19...Huh??? You want me to puchase ANOTHER upgrade...Alrewady? SERIOUSLY???
Guys, I really feel you need to do some re-thinking here. I was on MC17, purchased 18, and now you want me to purchase yet another upgrade to 19 after maybe only a couple of months??? C'Mon now...I'm REALLY disappointed in you for that...(sigh). ?

To get the most out the licence it's best to upgrade at the beginning of the cycle not 3 quarters of the way through the year.. You could of course skip 19 and wait for 20 or just bite the bullet and upgrade.. J River isn't similar to software like G-force, in the sense where your licence provides you will 1 years updates.. You are buying the licence for that version that will work indefinitely, even if you buy the licence 3 quarters way through the cycle, there still has been 3 quarters of a cycles worth of work put into it, so it's more like a product in the works that you buy, the updates don't revolve around the customers but around the software.. The best way is just to get into tune with the cycle, it will avoid all grievances.. Like you I have been using since MC17 luckily I got about half a year from MC17 before the new version came but since then I have always purchased at the beginning.
Oh and
Thank you Matt & of course the whole J River team, if it weren't for you all, I'd still be windows explorer folder surfing, dragging and dropping stuff into winamp (accidently moving folders into other folders and then finding them a year later).. I never liked the feel or look of the bloated itunes, thought mediamonkey might have been ok but didn't like feel of it..
It wasn't until I accidentally discovered J River that made it all change, I can't even remember where I found out about it, and I nearly passed it by without giving it a second glance, in all honesty it was the main website that nearly made me miss it, it's nice but doesn't to the program justice, I thought it was one of those scam softwares until I saw interact, I had never heard of J River, then a few months later was sitting scratching my head trying to remember the name, sometimes like when you try to remember a film or an actor's name and it bugs you for days, only this time no one was with me when I saw it.. The only thing I could do was to try & not think about it because that's the only time stuff pops back into memory
The support on here is excellent, I've had a fair few of my requests implemented from basic html styling tags to some more wacky ones that probably I am the only person using. On all of those merits alone is why I'll upgrade without question because good things do and will come..
-
Angelo,
In that respect, you are correct, my MC18 will work indefinitely, besides...I can spend $20 in a lot worse ways than really good software that meets my professional needs. Still, 2 months later and I'm upgrading again so that I myself can stay on the "cutting edge", as well as making sure that my station, as well as our broadcast staff are up-to-date on new capabilities is hard. It's not as if the station was paying for it...I pay for my own tools, but that's my problem, not JRiver's. Matt and the Team do an excellent job and the product remains #1 in my opinion - no doubt about it!

Amen brother, I could not agree with you more.
I think MC is a fantastic product and it's (obviously) loyal customers deserve more than a vapourware cash grab.
If JRiver cannot articulate a roadmap then they are in trouble. If they WON'T, then WE are in trouble.
-
You would think you were talking about spending a fortune, fer Crissake! It's 18 bucks and change, or a little more than ONE Hi Res download, for a feature rich, quality application that has proven out it's value for many people for YEARS.
The improvements are constant, the updates are constant, the software is never static, the customer service and tech help are excellent.
This happens every time an upgrade is offered, so I guess I'm not surprised, but it gets tiring ?.
yeah only $18 - that's what's so genius about it...
I saw a movie today with my $18, how's MC19 working for you?
Did it give you all the features you wanted?
-
I can't help but think these two statements are inconsistent:
"I think MC is a fantastic product"
"If JRiver cannot articulate a roadmap then they are in trouble. If they WON'T, then WE are in trouble."
As far as i know, there's never be a roadmap for a release, and yet they've remained in business for a good time now with a growing customer base, and you the customer think they have created an excellent product.
They use a different business model, one which you may not agree with.
The movie analogy is funny. You paid for something up front that you really knew nothing about yet, but took it on faith that you were going to like it.

Last night in a dream I was visited by the spirit of the great jack-a-lope.
When I awoke I had a brand new MC19 license under my pillow :D
-
You don't need to upgrade. MC18 is perfectly fine. It also will probably be several more months before MC19 is a better overall experience than MC18.
I've scanned this thread after updating and double-clicking my MJR file to install it. There is no indication that I'm now licensed for 19, which causes me to wonder if the installation I just did is valid (even though the msg reported that all is good). While we wait for a real 19, how about at least informing users in the Help > Registration Information dlg that they're licensed for 19?

just bought mc18 june 28th before my trial ran out.

JRiver MEDIA CENTER 11 has arrived with a host of improvements to maximize your digital media enjoyment...
... Existing MC9, MC10, or MJ8 license holders can upgrade to the new version for the reduced price of $26 USD.
This is from an email some time back, almost 8 years: 07.18.05.
I preordered. :)

Wow, my timing must be the worst!
I bought MC18 the 12th of June for 49.98. If I had this info I would of course have waited.
I must admit I don't feel that this is managed in the best way.
Except for that, I think you offer a great product!
-

At the end of the day, you paid for an MC18 license, and got what you paid for.
I bought MC18 around 6 months ago, and couldn't be happier with the product and the level of support and interaction we have with the team at JRiver - I bought my upgrade as soon as it was available.
A number of companies offer a 30-day grace period... but this is complicated by the fact that MC19 is not out yet. The option to pre-order a beta-test of MC19 was announced.
In all likelihood, MC19 will not be released in any form within the 30-day window of you making your purchase.
But I understand why some people may feel "burned" by this all the same.
After using Media Center for the last 6 months, I find it hard to complain though. It's completely changed how I use my PC for media playback.

They have operated this way for more than a dozen years and consistently show that they constantly improve the product. If you don't feel that the time is right to invest less than $20 in a proven product, then by all means, do NOT spend your hard earned money. Wait a while and see what the new version brings. By the time you feel it's worth your money, it will probably cost twice as much to upgrade, but that's still not a lot of money. You have OPTIONS right now
- invest a small amount and help guide the new release with your suggestions
- wait until the new release fits your needs, then invest your money in it when you feel more comfortable with what you will get
- don't invest at all, and continue using the product you have already paid for, and will continue to be able to use, and get support for for as long as you wish.
I see the same comments every release cycle, and I'd be willing to wager that most of the people making these comments spend more in a month on overpriced coffee with a green label on the cup than the cost of the upgrade to the new JRiver software that they probably use every single day. It still baffles me ?

i upgraded and only get "error restoring media center licence error unknown
MC19 isn't released yet, as was explained at-length in the offer to upgrade.
The license isn't useful until it is released. There is one small exception: the license will also work with MC18.0.206+. If you don't own MC18 yet, then you could use it for that in the interim. But if you already own MC18 then this is just a way to "get in cheap" before it comes out in a little while.

Download and install MC18 and then try restoring again.

Yes. It means that you already had a license for MC18.
-
Yes. It means that you already had a license for MC18.
So essentially you're just sending out the MC19 license ahead of the first user beta?
Still, it'd be nice to see some sort of confirmation in the MC18 Help > Registration msg box that my MC19 license is recognized, that the first MC19 beta will "see it" and authenticate itself with HQ once that day arrives.
-
Bought the upgrade. Came in at MC17, and few dollars per year for this awesome product is what I call value for money. One thing that would make it even better for me is the support for .rec files. Any chance?
-
Did I miss the bit where JRiver said you HAD to purchase a V19 licence. ?
If you don't want to purchase then don't- wait until V19 has been developed, peruse the list of features and see if you want it- and then pay the asking price at that time.
I've bought a licence for V19 because I know there is bound to be some feature that I'll want, I know this is the best price that will be offered and I enjoy "particpating" in the development of this great software- looking forward to the first release! :D
The business model may seem to upset some- but hey- you don't have to pay up unless you WANT to. ;D

Regarding my earlier post (quoted above) - PLEASE READ!!!
Without having a full understanding of the JRiver release model, I made a statement in my initial post about being disappointed in them because I was [apparently] being asked to upgrade to MC19 after only less than 2 months on MC18. Let me be the FIRST to state that I WAS WRONG!!! Let me repeat that to make sure that EVERYBODY understands...I WAS WRONG! I did not understand how JRiver's release model works (for that matter how it as worked for a good number of years). Matt was kind enough to contact me off-line and has taken the time to explain. Just so you know, I'm not a run-of-the-mill end-user either. I've been a software consultant/developer/engineer for some very large well-know companies for over 30+ years, and I've dealt with my fair share of licensing schemes in that time. I'll take JRiver's model any day, now that I have a better understanding, and if you know where the Microsofts, Adobes, etc's are attempting to head...In all likelihood you'll feel the same.
I am in no way affiliated with JRiver AND I am not, and never have been, in any way dissatisfied with either the JRiver Media Center product or JRiver response to technical support questions. I use JRiver MC in a professional setting to prepare my radio show for broadcast, I've recommended it as the standard for our station, recommended it to all of our existing broadcasters, as well as recommending it to new members of our Broadcaster Training Class.
If any confusion was caused by my post, I sincerely apologize to Matt, Jim, and the whole JRiver Team as that was not my intention. To any users who may have been confused, I also apologize, and ask that you learn from my mistake...if you don't understand...Ask, which is all I was really trying to do, I just didn't do it properly (sigh).
BTW...Did I mention that I think JRiver and Media Center are GREAT??? They are - HONEST! ;D
(I'm also willing to bet that there isn't a one of you that hasn't spent $20 in the past month on "something" that will give you far less value that JRiver MC will...C'Mon now you know you have "wasted" at least that much in the last month :o )
-
How stable will MC18 be when you switch over to MC19? I'd rather have a stable platform that I can use for the 6 months or so while MC19 is buggy. I'm fine with paying the $18 for MC19 to keep you guys developing, but I would like to have a stable MC18 I can use while I'm waiting for MC19.
Not that it's horribly buggy right now but it would be nice for the final few releases to concentrate on bug fixes rather than adding new functionality. Thx

Wow - not sure what it is you are doing with MC18 - but we use it on 5 workstations and I can't remember a more stable version of MC (as of 209).

We've been in bug fix only mode for about a month now. Anything major that is found will be fixed in both MC18 and MC19. Minor issues may not be fixed in MC18, since even a small fix can sometimes cause a new problem.
If you have anything major, please post it in the build thread, currently 18.0.269.
-
That's cool. It is much more stable than the MC17 or MC16. I'm glad you're already in bug fix mode so I'm happy. I ended up on a "bad" version of MC16 for about 6 months while MC17 was being developed so I'm a little gunshy still. MC is a great product and I really like the audio enhancements you've made.
-
I'm currently using MC17 on Windows XP. I would like to stay with XP on my music server machine. I'm considering pre-ordering MC19 but want to make sure that it will work with XP. Will MC19 be compatible/tested with Windows XP?
-
No way to be certain, but it's extremely likely.
-
Thanks. OK, I guess I'd better not go for it then.
-
Cheers and congratulations to the JRiver team for the continued success of one of my favorite pieces of software!
Upgrade: done. :)
Thanks, guys!

I would like to see improvements in the Theater view as well. I rarely use this feature even though it was one of the original reasons I opted for JRiver over other audio only programs. I think it is a fairly clunky interface for theater view.
Better Bluray playback would be awesome. I get the occasional glitch that's occasional enough I stick with my dedicated bluray player. Bluray/DVD ripping to MKV would be a great feature. MC18 seems to imply DVD ripping is supported but this has never worked afaik.
Audio is excellent. Not sure how to improve this... Have yet to try use the ASIO Line In interface in MC18 but this was next on my list. My ultimate goal will be the computer as full AVR with my external DAC. I hope the line in interface works pretty solidly for this purpose.
Video playback is good. It has become my standard player. It is pretty solid here. My aging computer (Core 2 Duo E8400) has trouble with the Red October HQ mode, but not sure what can be done on your end for this...
More streaming support would be awesome. I use the Netflix app on Win 8 because its so easy, but it would be cool to do this from JRiver as well. Airplay support would be cool, not sure what the comparable feature on Androids would be. That's fun for parties.
Lastly, Gizmo "Play All" mode and shuffle support would be nice. Not sure the MC18 version does these basic tasks.
I think these comments and feature requests may have been missed in all the squabbling regarding the upgrade price. I will pre-purchase but haven't gotten around to it yet. JRiver really has been a great program and occupies the majority of my time on the computer. I would love to see these to help it get even better. Thanks!
-
Any chance you will add more support for Server 2012 in core mode in MC 19. I only use JRiver for high end audio, nothing else. Maybe automatic updates in core mode?
-
@XP
It's the #2 desktop OS in the world according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems). I think we'll support it for a few more years, although some features won't be available like WASAPI, newer 3d rendering / DirectX, etc.
@Server 2012 Core
There's a big list of other platforms we could chase -- Linux, iPad, Android, Metro, Windows Phone, etc. My guess is that Server 2012 Core is a small niche compared to some of the others. So I wouldn't expect a command line version of MC for Server Core, at least for v19.

Although I suspect not, I so very much hope that the list above is sorted by priority ;)

Upgraded to MC19. Rooting for a Linux MC server, specifically for an UNRAID version.
Eagerly waiting :)

I currently have 17. I preordered 19. Does that preorder allow me to upgrade to 18 while waiting on 19? what do I need to do?

Yes, you can download MC18 (18.0.209) from the top of this board. Enter your MC19 license and it will work fine.

+1 on high end audio. There are already enough MP3 players on the market.
Any and all updates to improve audio playback quality will be very welcomed.
MC-19 pre-purchased and waiting ...
-
First of all MC is a great software and so is tech support. Fulfills all of my audiophile needs. For TV I still use Sage but looking forward to switch eventually...
And the upgrade is not expensive...(But that's beside the point...)
I would just love to know what I'm paying for...
A list of new features or improvements? Or why not wait a little for your discount offer until a beta version (even unstable) is available?
Or a list stability/performance improvements?
Just make one up so I can justify the purchase ::) :)
-
Think of it this way, blind faith is cheap, guided faith costs more, details cost even more, final details cost even more still.
Once plans and specs are further flushed out, the product is worth more, and so it continues until they near the end of the full development cycle, and which you'll pay the most.
You're free to choose your comfort vs cost level of entry.

As a loyal M-C supporter since MC09 I too am happy to to pay the now annual upgrade fee to support the continued development of this bench mark product.
I have lost touch with development for mobile platforms. I should like to think MC19 will be adding support for Windows Phone?

Since 19 isn't actually out and keys expire in 2 weeks, does this mean that we should change the registration for 18 and then just update when available?

I have absolutely no reservations on paying for the MC19 upgrade either. Just built a HTPC a few months ago, tried all the others buy none are as reliable and easy to configure as MC. I'm just floored by some of the whining.....
-
I think the annual upgrades are very reasonably priced. Even though the last version really didn't add anything I needed, I still more than happily pre-ordered MC19. Because I want to support the developers, and I see see it as an investment to make sure future development continues smoothly.
Sure there are free alternatives to MC out there, but I know from experience with other software. That you can't expect support, or bugs to be fixed, by people that work for free :P
-
It's an offer to allow the thousands of people that DO want to upgrade to do so for cheap
March 19, 2002 I received my first registration file from JRiver for Media Jukebox. I skipped two or three upgrades since then and I've had some bugs and hardware conflicts along the way (which the JRiver team fixed). On a couple of occassions I've cursed them under my breath and tried several other media players looking for something better (don't waste your time), I even had "words" with Jim H. once or twice and had my user ID suspended (note: you get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar).
Yet here I am again about to upgrade, sight unseen, to MC19. I'm not upgrading because "it's cheap" but because it's the best darn Media player on the market. Having said that, I like to save a few bucks on the upgrades now that I'm semi-retired, so cheap is good when you get a unique dependable quality product in return. Will it be a quality product? All I can say is that their track record has been pretty good.
Keep up the good work JRiver. Looking forward to the next release and if I don't like it, I'll be sure to let Jim know :)
-
Hey guys, I got a suggestion for future builds: What about a feature that allows you to link your Facebook account so that songs you play on JRiver post in your timeline, similar to how Spotify posts on your timeline every time you play a song. To add more to this, you can customize whether the post shows up after you've finished listening to a song or it posts when you start playing a song. Anyone else thinks this is a good idea?

Hi All,
I'm using a registered MC18 and just purchased the MC19 upgrade which took my money fine, but when I try to run the "Media Center19 Windows-220531.exe" file I get an error message that "This version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running...". This is strange as I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, which I imagine is one of the most common OS' around.
Any tips on how to resolve this? Running as admin doesn't help and running it in compatibility mode (Windows XP SP2 compatible) doesn't seem to do anything as my registration stays at 18 (although the error message isn't there) ?
Even though MC19 isn't released yet, I presume that I can still upgrade the registration now, which will save me having to restore it later on (and using up 1 an extra restore attempt).
Thanks in advance,
Nick

The biggest improvement would be to the tagging database for classical music which is still very long and with also the definition of a standard tag.
-
Just got my v19 license.
Will wait for the 1st stable build of v19, to start working 18/19 in parallel.
Soon as 19 becomes obviously better, will quit from 18.
thanks guys.

ok, dumb question...i read above that MC18 will work with the MC19 license (i'm currently on 17). i'd like to use MC18 for a bit until there's a stable 19...so i bought a 19 license knowing that mc18 will work with it.
so the dumb part of the question....if i download and install mc18, this won't mean i have to pay again if i already used the mc19 registration?
thanks, silly i know

Today I bit the bullet and decided to buy your discounted MC19 (and 18) upgrade for my current MC17 version. I have two machines: a Windows 7 and an XP. I used the Win 7 machine and Firefox to make the payment on-line without incident. I received the registration code both on-line and via email and I saved the "MJR" file to the desktop. So far, so good, right?
I double-clicked on the MJR file and I get an error message: "Information: Error restoring Media Center license: Unknown Error". Huh? I'm not trying to restore anything. I was trying to download MC18 while waiting for the MC19 release.
So, thinking that maybe the old MC17 version needed to be open to use the MJR file, I opened it. I double-clicked again on the MJR file again - same error.
So now what?
-
You probably just need to install MC18 from our Download Page.
-
OK, thanks. That seemed to have worked. I've installed MC18 on both machines now and I performed a very quick check that it plays music.
In retrospect, going to the download page after this purchase of an upgrade may seem to be blindingly obvious, but nothing in the web purchase sequence or the subsequent registration email led me there. Only some instructions about what to do with the mysterious "MJR" file without explanation about what is is or does. A reasonable person might assume that this MJR file would manage the download for the user. Just sayin'...
-
Well, I took the MC19 plunge, however, my MC18 serial number wouldn't upgrade, luckily the MC17 license did the trick and reflected the reduced price.
Looking forward to a great revision.

Anyone seen this compatibility issue before and know how to resolve it? Is this a non-issue? It does seem a bit strange and I'm concerned that it'll prevent my licence from upgrading.

The license is not an .exe file, your tool that downloaded the file renamed it.
Rename it to have the ".mjr" extension and then try running it again.
I believe this was a problem primarily with Opera, if thats what you're using.

I just tried to upgrade to MC 19 and I received the full price. I had my registration code sent to me from you. I am in test mode with server 2012 and will be installing several times but I thought maybe I would include MC 19 in this process also. I have bought many versions of JRiver so I don’t know why my upgrade did not work. I only use my laptop for forum work which does not include JRiver, JRiver is installed on my music server.

Thanks! That fixed it. The licence has now installed.
And yes, I'm using opera. I'll keep an eye out for this issue on future downloads.

I tried to upgrade. I entered my access code and was not recognized. I have 18 now. What gives?
I just tried your registration code ending with "-S63U3" on this page:
http://jriver.com/purchase_19_as_upgrade.html (http://jriver.com/purchase_19_as_upgrade.html)
And it gave me the $18.98 upgrade price. Are you using that same registration code?
-
Well, I took the MC19 plunge, however, my MC18 serial number wouldn't upgrade, luckily the MC17 license did the trick and reflected the reduced price.
Looking forward to a great revision.
If you have the time, give me the last 5 characters of your MC18 registration code so I can check out why it didn't work. Thanks.

purchased the upgrade - it's a pleasure to support such a good product, and such good customer support

I upgraded and promptly got a error message - "Error restoring Media Center License: Unknown Error.
Happened to me also! I was able to install MC19 on my PC, but when I tried to install it on my Laptop, I got the above message. Why would it install on one and not the other? I tried the restore option for the laptop and still get the same error message.
Please Help!

You need to have the latest version of MC.

You need to have the latest version of MC.
I have 18.0.209

I just did a complete uninstall and reinstall of MC18. I thought that would have removed the License data, but when I reinstalled, it came up as registered already. The MC19 registration still did not work. Still getting message, "Error restoring Media Center License, Error unknown"!
-
If you have an MC18 license installed there is no need to install the new license.

Hey! Getting ready to update to 19. Ive been around since MJ7. Really a great product and handles my 125K files with ease. I cannot imagine my life without JRiver. Great job guys and thanks for the years of great service!! -Spiffy

I'm confused ... I'm seeing an offer to upgrade for $18.98 Thread Topic: "Pre-order for the best price of the year" yet when I click through the upgrade price becomes $22.98.
Which is it, please.
-
It's $22.98. The $18.98 offer ended last week.

I was thinking to upgrade but with this increase, I will wait. I checked my notification email and there was NO mentioned any date...Guys, to be fair you should put this in your email. First, you ask for hypothetical upgrade which is not available and you should at least mention what features will have. Now, you increase the upgrade again still not availbale and no any info...? Common ...

It will be back at the regular price, $26.98, in a few days.
