I also had no volume control with 17 until I stepped away from Red October and specified the ffdshow audio filter, there was an issue with my thumbnails that made me remove and rescan them and several other small issues.
There are several options available for volume. "Internal" should work. There is no need to use or add ffdshow outside MC's Red October system.
If that doesn't work, please describe your system. Are you bitstreaming to a receiver?
