Title: Remote drive detection as Portable Device
Post by: SteveG on October 27, 2004, 05:03:46 pm
Beginning with tonight's build of MC (11.0.112) MC includes the ability to treat any drive path as a portable device with the underlying ability to synchronize to the drive. Please heed the warning about the possibility of file deletions when you include a path as a drive if you have 'Delete unselected files' selected during synchronization. As this is a new feature, please post any bugs or comments on it in this thread.

Thanks,

Steve

I tried it, and it worked, but 112 crashes when I connect a new USB device.  Judging from other comments, there are some problems with this build, so maybe it's a bit early to comment.  As a general question, if I synch with a playlist, should the playlist itself be copied to the specified folder? It isn't, but I'd like it to be.

It should not crash and does not here with the devices I am testing.  In order to figure this out, what player do you have?  How is it recognized by your PC (i.e. as a fixed drive, removable drive, wmdm device, etc)?

It depends on the device. When I see your reply above, I will answer in more detail.

Thanks,

Steve

It looks like yesterday's problems could have been related to the initial build problem.  I've tried again with the new build and it's behaving perfectly, including copying the playlists to the specified folder!

How does this feature work. I'd like to set up a second hard drive as a protable device so that i can keep a backup of all my songs, but in the handheld options there is nothing about defining which drive to be seen as portable. I also tried right clicking on a drive in the my computer section, but couldnt see any special options or anything.

park,

Have you figured this out or do you need more suggestions?

I have a directory on my laptop which I have synched to part of my library on my desktop. I haven't yet discovered a way to have the Media Center library on the laptop also updated with the paths and playlists synched to the directory. I notice there's a hidden .mpl file in the synched path. However, when I open this, all the file paths are with relation to the network path (i.e. z:\). Is there something I'm missing? Can I have MC on the laptop keep track of the files synched to it without continually updating the library by searching the files.

Also, could it update playcount info in the same way that an iPod or other handheld would on the central MC database?

udeups,

The features you request are not currently implemented. They are logical extensions of what we have and can be added in the future.

Thanks,

Steve

Thanks Steve. Really looking forward to these features. Will help greatly in keeping things organized and synched up.

SteveG,

just wondering: can I also define a local backup partition as a remote drive to be detected automatically? Or does it need to be the drive of a portable device?

jaguu,

It does not need to be a portable device.
