Title: Albums play in wrong order
Post by: 6233638 on February 11, 2013, 09:51:54 pm
I'm sure this behaviour can probably be changed, but by default when you hit play in the artist view, it's playing albums alphabetically, rather than by their year of release as you would expect.

Your title should be:
Albums play in wrong order FOR ME :)

You have control in MC as to how items are sorted in your views. You can edit the views and sort by [year] if you wish.

Sorry, to clarify, they are displayed in the correct order, but play in the wrong order.

If I just hit play on an artist, in the default artist view, I am shown a list of the albums sorted by year, but it's playing them in alphabetical order.

Continous play active, and not shuffle mode?

Shuffle is off. All I'm doing is hitting play on the album covers in the library, which brings up a list of everything by that artist. That list is ordered correctly, and the tracks play in numerical order, but the albums play alphabetically rather than the order displayed. (which is by date - as is standard)

Here, the list is:

But it plays as:

I'm not sure what you mean about continuous playback - I don't see an option for that. But I'm guessing that is the solution to another problem I'm having: if I double-click on a track from one of the albums in that list, it will play that track, and move on to the next, but stops when it reaches the end of the album, rather than moving to the next one.

It's one of the three settings next to the right side of playback bar.

1.Repeat,stop at the end of the playlist....
2.Shuffle,continous play.....
3.Audiopath....

Strange, I'm not seeing that here. The only options I have are:

Repeat:
Shuffle:

I've had a look through some of the playback and display options, and I still can't seem to get it to play the albums in chronological order (as displayed) rather than alphabetical order.

And if I simply double-click a track in that view, rather than hitting "play" on the album art at the top, it only plays one of the three albums then stops.

They are all set as Disc 1 of 1. (everything is, unless there are multiple discs)

Sorry, I sent you out on an unnecessary direction.  I'd misread your original post yesterday and responded from (mis)memory.

The file list is ordered and group independently from the categories in the view, which are sorted by Name by default, and that is probably what you want at the top Artist level.

To sort at the Album level, you'll have to customize the view, and change the Album category instead to an expression:

  [Date (year)] [Album]

This will now list your albums in chronological order, and when you hit play at the album category level, MC will play in this order.

However, as you've noted, when you attempt to play all albums at the Artist level, sorting has not occurred (since you haven't drilled down), so alphabetic sorting is used.

You could request an an enhancement to follow the lower category's sort order when you hit Play at the higher level.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that just displays all albums by year, rather than grouping them by artist?

The Artist grouping was done at the level above.  It sounds like you removed or changed that.  Your view should be :

[Album Artist (auto)]
[Date] [Album]      <-- this is what you should have changed from [Album] to the expression shown.

OK thanks, I think I have it figured out now. In the top view (cover art) it's just being sorted by Album Artist (auto) and in the lower view (track listings) using "Sort inside groups by" Album Artist (auto) then Year (a-z) seems to be working.

I still don't understand the logic behind it playing the albums in a different order from how they were being displayed, especially when that was one of the preset views, but at least it appears to be working as expected now.

I haven't managed to figure out how to get it to keep playing all tracks shown in the lower view though. If I hit the top-level "Play" button on the cover view it will go through all albums, but from this view (http://www.abload.de/img/artistshru0u.png), I should be able to double-click the "End Theme" track for example and when it is finished playing, it should move on to "Warm Sound" but instead playback stops.

There are independent sort orders.  If you drive playback from something in the Categories, that sort order should be used.  But if you drive playback via the File List, its sort order is used.

The two sort orders are often different (alphabetical for categories, by album date for the file list).  So you have your choice as to how you want the order of the Playing Now playlist to be filled.

As for adding files from the file list, your Double-Click behavior drives the set of files taken from a Group (Tools > Options > General > Behavior > Double-click).

To play across a Group, you can select the tracks you want played and hit Enter.

I am not sure if MrC already mentioned this (sorry, I didn't read everything), but it should be possible to resolve the problem by customizing the "sort inside groups" setting.

MC ungroups the files before gathering the new Playing Now list. The sort order is the same as it would be if Group By was set to None.

For example, the following should work if the Date field value does not vary inside individual albums. If the album tracks are tagged with varying Date values, a custom "sort date" field may be needed.

Sort Inside Groups By > Custom >
     Date (a-z)
     Album Artist (auto) (a-z)
     Album (a-z)
     Disc # (a-z)
     Track # (a-z)
     Name (a-z)
     Filename (a-z)

A screenshot of this setting is attached.
