Title: JFK
Post by: JimH on November 22, 2023, 12:24:04 pm
60 years ago today.  Gone.

Most people alive now have no memory of his death.  I was a freshman in college.  It was extremely shocking and sad.

What followed was a turbulent and divisive time.

LBJ, the War on Poverty, the Viet Nam war.

then Hippies and communes, Marijuana, the Civil Rights movement.

Nixon, Watergate, the opening of China, the Enemies List.

My Country Right or Wrong.  Love it or Leave it.  American flag bumper stickers, some upside down.

All without mobile phones or personal computers.  Windows you had to roll up.  No seat belts.  Almost no foreign cars.

JFK.  Gone.

I was a freshman in college.

I was in junior high, walking the mile and a half home from the bus stop with a friend.

We stopped in a store along the way to buy a soda and heard about it on the radio that was playing in the store.

Odd, how that memory lingers with me.

I remember watching all the events as they broke on the news, for about two weeks they played all the videos

I have all the videos from ABC, NBC, and CBS stored on my hard drives.  I got them from a person who worked for one of the networks.

some interesting videos to watch.

I probably will be dead before they release some of the top-secret documents.

If you were around, you will never forget the moment.  I was in sixth grade at Transfiguration grammar school in Williamsburg Brooklyn.  This was way before Williamsburg was "cool".  I very clearly remember the nuns whispering and looking a bit off kilter.  They then made the announcement and sent us home.  I do remember watching all the 24/7 coverage.  If I recall this accurately, regular TV was preempted for days.

However, I have a more vivid memory of the Cuban missile crisis, even though I was younger.  I was scared poop-less.
