Title: "Virtual" disk reference (new request)
Post by: vaso65 on July 22, 2020, 05:24:39 am
Hi to all

Is it possible to use virtual references to external disks so that the change of letter does not force remapping / configuration activities?

Let me explain

By frequently changing external disks it is frequent to change the letter referring to a disk.
To see the library again it is necessary to change the letter of the disk to the file paths on the whole library.

To overcome this problem you can use a "virtual" reference, for example the label of the disk.

That is, you can set the path [DiskExt01]\music\... as the path of the file, to access the file the program only has to convert the label of the disk [DiskExt01] with the letter that the system has assigned to it (for example L: )

An example of this mode can be found in the FreeFileSync program.

Thanks for your work

Just tell Windows to always use the same letter for your external drive.

It is a good idea to fix the disk letter but some of my disks are backup copies and must be connected at the same time. Being then used in different places they always act as the library and they must all keep the same letter.

I think using the disk label as a reference is an additional possibility of configuring / managing external disks without going to continually correct the system configuration or the library.

Thank you.
