Post by: JimH on January 31, 2022, 02:29:49 pm
Where is MC29? (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,131911.0.html)

How To Upgrade
Please read these instructions (https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,131902.0.html).

Download and Install The New Version
You can find the latest build near the top of this board in a thread.  In a few days, it will also be on the Download Page (https://jriver.com/download.html).

Find Your License and Restore it
Please read Restoring a License (https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License)

Moving Your Data and MC Database On Windows
When you install MC29 for Windows, it will find your old database, copy it and use it.  It should just work when you run it.

On Mac or Linux
You will need to restore a backup from your previous version.   MC makes them automatically.  Search for files ending in .zip.

Backups can now contain settings and thumbnails.

What About Your Old Version?
Keep it as long as you want.  Uninstall it when you're happy with your new version.  Uninstalling doesn't affect the new version or your data.

I have specific settings in my JRiver MC.  Other than manually resetting all settings in a new version, is there any way to upgrade in place?

Sometimes edgeview? needs long time.

Have same behaviour, one pc it runs quick, the second it looks lite it stops but only needs long time.

If you use win10, its good to be current with all updates of windows

Also, the first time installation copies the thumbnails from the old version to the new as part of the upgrade process. if you have gigabytes of thumbnail cache, that could take some time...

I just installed MC29 and made the switch from MC 27 to MC29 and it went without any errors.

I did have to do some manually configurations in MC29 after the installation.

Are there any particular reason why my zones didn't transfer and I had to manually add my zones again and make new Zoneswitch rules?

When the zones wasn't added, I had to manually add those and after that manually configure (under Options) all my different zones.
for example; Values for subtitles, DSP-filters and so on.

Best regards,

Don't think you can, Google blocks it.

Same problem for me: I had to restore all the setting by hand. No automatic migration.
Thanks

Same issue here - no automatic configuration transfer
Didn't even select the correct output and defaulted to direct sound (which sounds rubbish )

Just as well I never uninstall the previous version as had to transfer all settings manually

Also just noticed I was playing a sacd image via bitstream  and found that the playback   zone on 29 is set to 'remote' rather than 'player' which 28  plays under ( easy to switch but a pain)

I've upgraded MC many times, and the new version never has picked up the old version's settings. I don't know why; it just works that way. It will usually pick up my list of libraries, but that's it.

To resolve this, I run the old version one last time (prior to upgrading, if I remember), back up all my libraries, and turn off media server. I then run the new version, create libraries as needed, then restore them from the backups. With the first (main) library, I tell MC to restore my program settings.

Then there's one last step. Go into settings, and correct the default library backup path, which will point to the old version's folder.

That's it. I don't know why it has to be this way, but it is.

Settings normally transfer. Anything non-standard about your library?

I am curious to see if will work for me - pretty much every upgrade that I have ever done has always had some sort of problem with the thumbnail cache.

I remain optimistic but will be backing up and prepping my thumbnail cache just the same.

Cheers!

What do you mean by "non standard library"?
I'm migrating from version 28.

I have upgraded each version from 18 to the present, with the exception of skipping 28.

When I installed 29, it picked up my library and views but not program settings like window layouts, zones, and fonts.

This was never the behavior before. It is a problem. How to resolve, please?

Use your old program to backup.  Use MC29 to restore and include settings.

In version 29 a "Remote" appears on top of the page. It was not there in the previous versions.
What does it mean?

Question & suggestion: when upgrading / installing MC for the first time, would it be possible to offer (ideally as the very first step) an option in Installation Wizard to choose the language? The way MC installs now is strictly English which could be a pain for non-English speakers (being a translator of MC to Czech I do sympathize)

When updating, MC does remember the language chosen in the app and uses that language for Installation Wizard as expected - the problem is a fresh install / upgrade.

It should chose the language you've set in Windows.

Thanks very much for your translations.

I know (have been told so in past) so let me inform you that in all those many (17! the time flies...) years of using MC, whenever I did a fresh install or upgrade, as far as I remember it never did (having Windows set to Czech as a system language I always got English during the installation)

Thanks very much for your translations.
You are very much welcome  ;)

Good find.

Coming next build:
Changed: When the system language is Czech (LANG_CZECH) that will be selected as the default translation.

Upgraded from 28 today. Very smooth and painless.
My library and thumbnails are not in the default location and everything just worked.
It's much easier than the early days of MC when I had to edit the registry to move the thumbnails, fiddle around with library location settings, and manually copy the skins and custom resources after every upgrade.
Nice job, thanks.

I have recently updated from MC16 to MC29. I noticed that in MC29 the "Play Count" for albums is not displayed as an average, but as a total.

Example: If I play 6 tracks of an album with 10 tracks once, MC16 would show a "Play Count" of "0.6 average", but MC29 shows "6 total" instead.

How can I induce MC29 to display the "Play Count" average like MC16, rather than the total?

Thanks for any help you might have.

JimH or Matt - I just upgraded to MC29 and now I have duplicate entries in my library for every song in my library... Is there any easy way to delete the duplicates? I have like 20K something songs, so there is no way I'm doing it manually lol. It's kinda bugging me though. Hopefully, there is an easy fix for it? Thanks! Other than that I love the new build!

Check your auto import settings.

To remove some of the files, you need to be able to search for one part of them.  D: as an example.  Try deleting a few before you do very many.

JimH, they are true duplicates of the same files in the same location. I haven't encountered this before and I've been around since MC16. Would it be easier to delete my entire JRiver library and recreate it? I'd rather do that if you'll walk me through it so I don't screw it up. We're talking every song in my entire collection has two entries. Over 20,000 songs, so doing it manually isn't really an option. Sorry if I didn't do a good job of explaining the issue.

Thanks in advance for your help sir, I appreciate it!

Are you using the Mac version of MC?

Restore a backup from MC28.  MC makes them automatically.  Use your file browser to search for zip files.  The wiki has more information on backup.

I upgraded from MC 28 to MC 29 for Windows 64-bit.  Currently running 29.0.41.  Installation went fine but every time I restart my computer I am unable to access the media player.  I get this message:  Media Center was installed for a different operating system.  Please reinstall Media Center.  The reinstall doesn't take long but I'm tire of doing this (10+ times now).  Any suggestions?

Make sure the install and Media Center are not running in compatibility mode.  In that mode Windows tells us a different version.

It's the program you downloaded to install.

Right-click it and make sure it's not in compatibility mode either.

Matt or JimH - I did a restore from my MC28 backup as you recommended, but my duplicate library entry issue I mentioned in my previous posts still persists. How do I completely delete my MC29 library and build a new one from the hard drive that holds all my music? I would assume that would fix the issue and I don't mind taking the time to do it.  Thanks! Philip

Edit: Here is a pic so you can see what I mean concerning the issue I'm trying to fix...

What I don't understand why the duplicates are showing file location as D: Drive? I don't even have a D: Drive in my computer. All my music is on my F: Drive. I did have a D: Drive at one time, but that was over a year ago.

If the D: files play, then maybe you have some mapping for D: that makes it work.

I do not know you got to this point but you could do a search on D: and then delete all the entries it finds.  This should keep the F: files and any settings you have in the library.

Alternatively, you could right click on Playing from Main Library, select Add New Library and create a new library, then do a manual import of your files. You could also do File - Library - Clear and then do a manual import.  You will have to add any settings you have customized.

Hi All,
Im new to the forum but not new to MC. I recently upgraded from 28 to 29. the install went fine no problems but 29 took full control of my audio. It will play nothing but MC29. Ive tried wasapi and asio. Tried toggling exclusive mode nothing works so far. I finally figured out if I go into Tidal and toggle exclusive mode I can get Tidal to work. Which works for me since this machine only runs MC and Tidal. Very strange though nothing else works not even windows sounds when i tried to turn that back on. any ideas?
Thanks!
