[Updated by JimH to reflect the release.]
JRiver Media Center 19 Mac builds are available now on the MC19 board (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=36.0). If you purchase now, you will receive an MC19 license that works with both versions.
MC19 will contain many of the audio improvements in MC19 Windows (http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=81980.0) like real-time DSD, improved audio analysis (based on R128), enhanced memory playback, etc. You can expect many additional improvements this year.
We will continue to fix bugs on Media Center 18 Mac, but no more features will be added. We think we've done what we set out to do for the initial release. It seems to work well now for most people.
For a limited time, you can order a MC19 Mac upgrade for $14.98 (the regular price is $26.98):
http://jriver.com/purchase_19_mac_as_upgrade.html The upgrade price is only valid if you have purchased a previous version of JRiver Media Center for Mac.
If you have purchased MC18 Mac since August 1, we have emailed you a free upgrade license when MC19 builds are available.
Thanks to everyone that has supported JRiver.

That sounds like a great deal, thank you very much!

Just purchased the upgrade. A no brainer as I love 18.
-
I bought JRiver for Mac 18 on 22 July for $49. Now today I had to pay $15 to get a future update to MC19 because the cut-off date for free updates is 1 August. I forked out the money because I really want this update with the ability to convert to DSD, but frankly I am displeased with this commercial practice. People who bought at full price a couple of months before a new version is rolled out should benefit from a free update in my view, but well, that's the way it is.
-
Boris,
Let's say they release the first stable version of 19 on Nov 1. That is 3 months after Aug 1. They are just offering the $14.95 price for people who want to get a great price even though there may not be a stable release of 19 for a few months. Nuff said.

Sweet - I will order as soon as I can find my registration number. :)
I assume that V19 will get a whole lot more Mac-Like interface?? :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

It will always use the JRiver skinning engine and our default look (which is currently Noire). This is similar to how iTunes looks similar on both platforms.
We've recently had a designer working with us on MC18 Mac to get little touches like the the menu bar, Mac-like window control buttons, etc.
Feel free to start a thread if there are other things that are important to you.
(p.s. thanks for upgrading)

Could you clarify whether CD ripping has been or will be implemented in 18 - as far as I can tell it isn't in the most current build. Thx

Welcome.
CD ripping is not part of MC18 Mac. A little more here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=79848.0
Like I mentioned above, it will be bug fixing only on MC18 Mac from here out. If you have any remaining problems, please start a thread and provide details. We'll do our best to get it solved.
Thanks.

Upgrade ordered.
Thanks :)

What will be the retail price for MC19 when it releases?

What will be the retail price for MC19 when it releases?
Welcome.
The regular retail price is $49.98, the same as MC18 Mac.
Any purchase of MC18 Mac from here out will get a free MC19 Mac license.
-
Ah ok.. I was wondering if I purchase MC18 now I would have to pay the upgrade price for MC19. So if I purchase MC18 now I will have free upgrade to MC19? Thanks!
-
So if I purchase MC18 now I will have free upgrade to MC19? Thanks!
Exactly.
We'll email free MC19 Mac codes to anyone that has purchased MC18 Mac since August 1 sometime in the next week or so.
-
I bought MC18 with the understanding the it'll be able to rip CDs in a few months and now I find out that will not be possible. Will I be able to do CD ripping in MC19 or will that be a feature that will never be implemented??
-
I just upgraded to MC19. Thanks for keeping the price very fair for us early adopters. I'm really looking forward to the next few months. :)
Matt & JohnT have been great with customer service.
I certainly cannot forget the amazing MrC! Truly an asset to all of us users and JRiver.
-
Also purchased.

Thanks. But I can't figure out why I keep receiving stiff chooks.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Our scope for MC18 was audio playback and Media Network. I had hoped ripping and burning might be easy, but the SCSI stuff was not (it probably requires a kernel mode driver).
There are several big components needed to reach feature parity with Windows -- OpenGL for Theater View, SCSI for ripping and burning, image playback, video playback, etc.
I'd like to see SCSI, OpenGL, and image playback happen for MC19. However, I'm not certain what will make the cut. If there's some feature you don't like the program without, please wait to buy until that feature is there and you're happy with it. We want you to be a happy customer, but we can only code so fast :)
-
I removed a few comments about problems with MC18 Mac from this thread.
If you have an MC18 Mac issue, please start a new post on the Mac board and describe your problem and how to reproduce it with as much detail as possible. We'll try to work through it.
Thanks.
-
I am not getting a clear picture of what will be in MC19 for MAC other than audio enhancements. Video Playback? Live TV?
-
I suggest you read two comments up. It would appear that Theater View (for music and image playback), and Photos are on the drawing board. And CD ripping.
-
Can the new licence received on purchase of V 19 be installed in the current version, or should we wait for V 19 to be launched and then do a restore?
Thanks

If you bought an upgrade, just wait for MC19 Mac to use your code.
If you bought for the first time recently, we'll mail you an MC19 code sometime soon.
If you buy for the first time using the latest MC18 Mac (18.0.216 or newer) you will receive an MC19 Mac license that works with MC18 Mac and MC19 Mac.

Thanks for the clarification Matt, it was the upgrade that I purchased.

Hi Matt
MC 19 will be able to play DSD to PCM on the fly?
-
Hi Matt
MC 19 will be able to play DSD to PCM on the fly?
MC18 can play DSD input as PCM output.
MC19 will add playing PCM input as DSD output. Be aware that this new option requires a reasonably fast computer.
-
Hi Matt,
Thanks Also via DLNA?
-
Hi Matt,
Thanks Also via DLNA?
It's not currently possible to do real-time DSD encoding for DLNA playback. We've had a few requests for this, so it might happen someday.

Two questions. Do you think it sounds better and what's a reasonably fast computer?

As for performance, a JRMark (Help > Benchmark) of 3000 or better should be fine. It's possible a 2000 or even 1500 might work too, but I'm not sure.

Upgraded, Thanks :)

Hereby an extra request :). DLNA, is my only way (best SQ) of using jriver.
Thanks for the info.

Just upgraded and looking forward to MC19.
I have a real need to use regex (I have a large-ish library - around 160,000 tracks - which needs serious tidying up). The last I saw, this was coming, but I don't think the functionality is there yet. I may have missed it in a recent release, though.

MC18 Mac uses the Posix regular expression engine, which has limitations.
Our hope is for MC19 Mac to use the Boost regular expression engine, the same as Windows.
-
Excellent! Happy to hear you guys are keeping on. Good work so far and thanks for listening to us.
I only have two feature requests for MC19:
- figure out what to do with volume control (system volume doesn't mute, 0% is audible; internal volume makes little sense how it operates)
- track back/forward media keys functional
Thanks!

Hi,
I couldn't remember the exact date that I purchased jriver mac but should be after 1 august. I haven't received a free upgrade license yet, is it possible to confirm will I get a license or not?

Matt, I am having trouble down loading JRiver for Mac. I have a 27" I mac. I am using 10.8.4 (operating system). I believe the program is downloading but when I try and install it the error code reads (media Center 108194-1.ex). Because Microsoft windows applications are not supported on OSX. I have unlocked the security so it will load non Mac programs. Is it possible that I have somehow downloaded the Microsoft version vrs the Mac version? Any help would be appreciated.

Try out build .218 - mute, back, forward should work correctly.

Purchased. Thanks for your continued development, guys. MC kicks ass.
-
Is there a way to find the purchase date other than searching our credit card history ?
-
I purchased an upgradel but why does the confirm say 'for PC' ?
'Thank you for your purchase of Media Center 19 Mac from JRiver, Inc.
Your web purchase should have activated Media Center on your PC automatically. If you have another PC........'
And there is an install key, is this for my Mac ?

Thanks for the upgrade. You have a Mac license.
We sometimes use the word PC as a synonym for computer. We should probably stop doing that.

Mac mini 96kbit/s maximum output via toslink
DLNA 192k works fine currently into Naim Unitiqute 2
Please see this as my vote for DLNA integration UPnP would be superb
Just purchased my code. That makes $40 total for Mac 18 and 19 versions. Thanks for encouraging early adoption.

I'm confused. MC 18 lacks some features that are standard in the Windows version. For example, I cannot drag & drop songs from iTunes. It also lacks a Mac-looking interface (menus, in particular, are Windows-like).
My expectation in purchasing MC 18 was that these features that are already a part of the Windows product would be included, if not right away, then ultimately, in the version or its updates. Likewise it was my expectation that the product would feel like a Mac product, not a Windows one. That also has not happened in MC 18.
Instead of this, it sounds like you (JRiver) are done with adding features to MC 18 that already exist in the Windows version. It sounds like, if I want more of these features, or if I want a product that actually feels genuinely Mac-like, then I must upgrade to MC 19. And even then, I'm not clear as to what features that already exist within the Windows product, or what features that would make it more genuinely Mac-like but are presently excluded, would NOT be included in MC 19. Hence, I'm unclear how many more upgrades I'll be asked to pay for, in order to actually get the product I was originally expecting - one that is actually equivalent to the Windows version, but genuinely Mac-like in its layout and functionality.
Would you (JRiver) be willing to clarify for me your intention with respect to further development on MC 18, and on your roadmap for when and under what version of MC you will actually incorporate all of the existing Windows features and a genuine Mac-like feel?
Thank you.
-
MC18 won't change much now. Are you using 18.0.218?
Your expectations may not match what we said we would do.
-
Thank you for your reply.
Perhaps I missed a declaration up-front of what MC 18 for Mac was intended to be, ultimately. Is there a public post or article from back then (pre-release of the alpha version) that you can point me to?
I'm also still wanting to hear what your product development roadmap is for the Mac version: what features of the current Windows version will be included and excluded from MC 19 for Mac? At what version do you anticipate parity with the feature set of the Windows version, or at least to be including all of the features currently now included in the Windows version, ALONG WITH a genuinely Mac look & feel?
-

Like this one about the UI:

etc.

... ALONG WITH a genuinely Mac look & feel?
Depending on what you want, it could be never. We'll do the things we believe are important. Apple itself makes changes in its official look from time to time. We're not going to try to follow every change they make.
-
Is video expected for MC19? I am perfectly happy with everything audio related since the DAC issues got straightened out. Now I just have a pile of videos in various formats that I'd like to be able to play. I was expecting this to be a part of MC18, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over this. You have delivered more for less as it stands, so I wont have too much of a problem tossing more money for MC19 if it adds all the video features.
-
One feature that I need is dragging & dropping of songs from iTunes. It's not clear to me if/when you'll offer this feature. A feature I want is access to my iTunes playlists from within MC, or an easy path to carry them over (dragging & dropping would work).
You might read the posts from JRiver earlier in this thread.

I'm inferring from what I've seen posted, that you don't have a detailed roadmap for the product development path (e.g. you anticipated incorporating CD ripping in MC 18, but abandoned this when it proved too complicated), and so I can't upgrade now in anticipation of what features MC 19 will include. I'm being offered to either upgrade now and take my chances on what MC 19 will actually incorporate, or wait until you have a version with the feature set I can accept before considering a purchase.
Our scope for MC18 was audio playback and Media Network.
I wish this and the further details that are only recently apparent, had been clearer to me up-front.

i'm sure it was stated clearly for me to read when I purchased jriver mc for mac, but didn't realize the license model is that major upgrades come with a full price tag. existing customers get a discount by way of the early bird special, but that's probably a discretionary offer. that is, no guarantee that when mc 20 comes out that I'll be offered an early bird special. correct?
not a bad price in the grand scheme of things. but have one question. if I want to skip mc 19 altogether and wait for mc 20...would i be eligible for said early bird special assuming one is offered? or, early bird specials are afforded to holders of most recent release?
-

Major upgrades aren't full price, they're generally $26.98 USD, full price is generally $49.98.
Early bird specials are generally for license holders of any previous version, not just the most recent.
-
I've been purchasing MC for my PC, but I'd like to use it on my Macbook. Is there any discount off of full retail for a person who has purchased a PC license?
-
With JRiver dumping MC18 so quickly, my beta testing price of MC18 $29.99 + the upgrade price to MC19 $14.99 means I've pretty much been paying forward for the full price MC19.
-
I think eventually we will end up paying more than full price by time the updates are released for more money.
I don't know of any software companies that offer a new releases with a health warning that it could be more unstable than the previous release.
I paid for the upgrade and will wait a while, after that I'm waiting for a complete product.
