I can't connect to a library server pc anymore (was ok with 286)
rebooted both pc's...

Hm, I have a laptop with .289 connecting to a desktop PC with .289 without problems - maybe something changed that's getting blocked by a firewall?
-
just to be sure, I reinstalled on both pc's again and rebooted again
I always see
failed to connect to a server
reason unknown
url:http://192.168.1.100:81/GetLibrary
when I select 'search for media servers'
So it did find the correct address of the server ?
no difference if I manually create a library pointing to the server.
there are no firewalls set up on either pc (nothing changed since v286)

Is something else running on port 81? You could try a different port.
-
tried it.... make no difference (I didn't change anything but upgrade from 286)
I changed from 81 -> 1200
and now if I select 'search for media servers'
I now see :
failed to connect to a server
reason unknown
url:http://192.168.1.100:1200/GetLibrary
so the client did see the new port...

I must say, I keep having problems with Media Server with the last couple releases and reported on it before. I tought it is now fixed with 289. But: For some odd unexplainable reasons, sometimes it still just wont connect. Same error as reported above. At other times, it works seamless. But there must be a bugger somewhere. It is a nerve consuming excercise trying to connect x-times before it finally gets the library.

another problem I have with previous releases, is
that a couple of times per day,
ONLY when the track is finished and it changes to the next one,
then sometimes the client MC stops playing.
I have to select 'next track' -> 'previous track' to make it play the track....
It doesn't always happen.... it seems random...
I can't see any obvious network problems that would cause this.

290 won't connect for me either (I did reboot both machines)

problem solved....
it was a weird one. I saw an error in the log file on the client that the network was inaccessible.... (although everything looked ok, ping, internet explorer, windows networking etc.)
I reinstalled the XP network drivers and then everything worked (v290)
