Title: madVR black screen - no video [Solved for some by rolling back Windows update]
Post by: fedpul on September 04, 2019, 06:17:50 pm
Hi, yesterday I tried to watch a movie and getting no video from madvr, EVR works fine. I tried deleting all the content in the Plugins folder, resetting settings and more without luck. Any of you are having the same issue? I use the latest version of Windows 10 with latest Nvidia official drivers for my GTX 1080 Ti, almost two or three weeks ago I watched a movie without problems, but there were a couple of update in the last weeks.

Specific info:
Windows build: Version 1903 Build 18362.329
Nvidia drivers: 436.15

If any of you need more info, please ask for it.

Thanks in advance.

Greetings from Argentina.

Did you try both Red October Standard and HQ?

Hi Jim, Red October Standard works without issues, only with Red October HQ which uses madvr I get no video (audio still plays fine).

Are you making any modifications to RO?  If not, it's probably the video driver.

No, I'm not. In fact I deleted the content in plugins folder inside appdata, so JRiver downloaded all the codecs, lav filters and madvr again.

Have this been reported by any other users with these drivers version?

Have this been reported by any other users with these drivers version?

Plenty of people have reported black screens after a Windows update broke functionality, which required a video driver update to fix.

Specific versions depend on your hardware, manufacturer, etc. I'm using 425.31 on the hardware in my signature currently, as it maintains 3D capability. It's not the latest, obviously, but works.

If you are on the latest nVidia drivers and there are no updates, downgrade. nVidia may have broken something with the latest. Happens all the time.

The optional Windows 10 update KB4512941 appears to be the culprit here, I updated and got exactly the same symptoms as @fedpul.
Tried several different Nvidia driver revisions for my MSI GTX1060 to no avail.
Backed out of the Windows 10 update using System Restore and Red October HQ /Madvr worked fine again.

Hi terrym@tassie, that did the trick. I uninstalled the update KB4512941 and Red October HQ works again, so it is not a driver problem.

If any of you are having this problem try this and then block the update from being auto installed following the guide in this site:

https://www.repairwin.com/prevent-a-specific-windows-update-or-driver-from-installing-in-windows-10/

Thanks for sharing!!!

@JimH Will you be reporting if the problem is fixed so we can install that update again?

Running MC v25.086 no issues with ROHQ just installed KB4512941 on two different machines with nvidia cards (GT710 and GTX1060). Using drivers v398.36 and v397.64 respectively. The GT710 uses MC "balanced" madvr profile, the GTX1060 uses my own custom madvr profile.

Thanks for that info @tzr916.
It is always interesting how a lot of these annoying Windows 10 issues only affect a proportion of the user base, perhaps this one only affects the Southern Hemisphere (@fedpul is in Argentina, I'm in Tasmania) ;D

EDIT: I'll try reapplying the KB4512941 update using Nvidia driver V397.64 as that has worked for @tzr916 and report back.

This doesn't appear to be a JRiver problem.

Agreed, Jim.
It also seems to be a minority problem, no-one has reported it on the Doom9 madvr forum thread either.

Ah yes. I just read about all the problems KB4512941 is causing a select group of people. There seem to be more and more reports of different issues with it though, but still, not everyone is affected.

OK, so I tried the KB4512941 update with Nvidia driver V397.64 that worked for @tzr916.
No dice, same problem, black screen and no playback.
Uninstalled update, all fine again.....
I've attached logs for playback pre and post KB4512941, maybe someone cleverer than me can shed some light on what the issue may be.
I guess the current state of play is YMMV with this particular update.

The patch seems to be breaking the DirectShow Filter Graph connections for video.

"0678328: 8700: Playback: CDXPlayerWindow::LayoutWindow: Graph doesn't have video interfaces"

But the Graph information in the logs looks okay, as far as I can tell.

Maybe reinstalling MC, and hence re-registering the DirectShow Filters, after installing KB4512941, will fix the problem? Or just try re-registering the filters manually on a non-working system.

A normal graph that plays properly on my Workstation installation of MC looks like the below. Perhaps check the Graph on a non-working system, if the right-click option still works.

Yes, but the line "0047734: 8456: Playback: CDXPlayerWindow::LayoutWindow: Graph doesn't have video interfaces" also appears in the log for the pre-update that works....

I and @fedpul have also tried deleting and reinstalling all the Directshow plugins....

It'll probably remain a mystery and be fixed in some further update down the road (I hope).

I have also KB4512941 installed, MC 25.098, RO HQ modified and NV 436.15, GTX 1070 & GTX 960, but all works fine for me. Seems to be a tricky problem. If I do Win update I don't do anything, no other open app's, to ensure integrity of the update. But I use MC's Client server architecture, the server is only connected via Ethernet to the client's.

The problem has fixed itself.....
I did a further KB4512941 update (4th time) to generate a madvr log using debug mode and it suddenly started working. Reverted madvr to release mode, still OK.

Windows 10 is just plain weird sometimes....

I have just tried a couple times reinstalling the update but it did not work, even after uninstalling it and erase the content inside Windows/Software Distribution/Download.

I will report it to madshi. It is not related to JRiver.

Thanks for your help.

Hi darky link, I have tried disabling FSE and it did not work. In fact I have verified that it is a JRiver problem and not a madvr problem installing MPC-BE (which works without issues).

@JimH Please do not mark this thread as solved, can I help you with logs or any info to debug this strange behaviour? The update it is only affecting JRiver, not madvr, not NVidia drivers. I have also tried disabling VideoClock, Hardware acceleration and 3D decoding but it did not work either.

I am still on 1809 and 425.31 (as roderickgi ... for 3D reason)

I only have Direct 3D 11 checked and present for every Vsync enabled

Full Screen Exclusive is broken I think and not supported anymore on Windows 10 (so I disabled it)

And windowed overlay is incompatible with FSE ... but even if you not using FSE ... should disable it too ... I don’t see real benefit for it on Windows 10

... should restart MC after make those changes to make sure it applies

PS: are you using multiple screens?

Hi tij, I have tried disabling FSE but still getting black screen in JRiver. I have not experienced issues with Windows 10 and FSE, why do you say it is broken?

Also I do not think Windowed Overlay has any impact if using FSE, disabling both options also gives black screen. Also tried these combinations in MPC-BE and all worked without issues.

I have two screens (Full HD Monitor and 4K TV), but I only use one at a time, never have both actives.

This is becoming a Hendrik question I think.

I have two screens (Full HD Monitor and 4K TV), but I only use one at a time, never have both actives.

Explain everything about how you use the two screens. How are they connected? Connected to what? How you switch between them. When you switch. What is the startup sequence; what gets powered on first, next, is the other monitor always off, when do you start MC, etc.

What setting do you have in "Options > Tree & View > Full Screen > Monitor"?

I don't use it, but MC has some basic understanding of multiple monitor configurations. It sounds like this could be what is tripping you up. Maybe the video is playing to the monitor that isn't turned on.

can you attach your madVR settins (zipped ... its setting.bin in JRiver plugin directory located in user roaming profile)

... also try restarting without monitor plugin ... jyst TV ... see if that helps to eliminate possibility of 2nd monitor causing the problem

Hi tij, first of all, thanks for your advice.

I tried starting the PC without the monitor connected, just the TV and I get the black screen too. There is sound playing normally, also I can see JRiver bar at the top (and play/pause, stop, etc). The OSD does not work neither the Ctrl+J of madvr. I have tried some videos downloaded from Youtube and a couple BluRay rips, all with the same results.

I have now changed the topic to not solved (thanks for that suggestion).

Edit: I forgot to attach the settings zipped.

Okay, tij picked up on my followup questions. It appears MC is outputting to the correct monitor/TV. I'll leave you two to discuss madVR settings, so I'm no expert.

However, it does seem to be a KB4512941 and madVR issue. Did madshi respond to your query?

Also, the first time you uninstalled KB4512941 video started working again. Do you still have a Restore Point you can restore back to to get it working, without KB4512941 installed? That would appear to be the short term solution, until Microsoft/madshi fix the issue.

Hi RoderickGI, madshi have not answered yet to my post in Doom9 forum. But I doubt it is madvr related only beacuse it works fine with MPC-HC. It only happens when using JRiver in combination with madvr (JRiver+EVR works fine too). I can uninstall the update and block it/hide it, but I do not know if this leaves my system open to vuelnerabilities.

If you want to progress the issue, rather than just avoid it by uninstalling KB4512941, compare the DirectShow Graphs between MPC-HC and MC using RO HQ. Maybe there is something obvious.

I ran my MC with your MadVR settings (on NVidia 1070 … different Windows version and Nvidia drivers ofcourse) and it works

Things to keep in check … JRiver uses its own copy of MadVR (located in [user]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 25\Plugins\madvr)

Check whether MadVR settings in JRiver (access through MC options) matches MadVR settings of your MPC-HC (access through MadVR tray icon on desktop) ... also check version of MadVR for both

PS. I also notice in your MadVR setting [devices]->[display mode] … you have 2160p24, 2160p50, 2160p60

you should really match all refresh rate as 24 is not 23.97 … so something like

2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p25, 2160p29, 2160p30, 2160p50, 2160p59, 2160p60

PSS. screenshot of your Nvidia setting will be helpful … one of [change resolution] stuff on bottom (output format, color depth, dynamic range, etc) … one of your multiple monitor setup

@fedpul
You may also want to generate some madvr logs to compare the difference, use the 'activate debug mode.bat' file in the \plugins\madvr folder to turn on logging. This will generate a madvr.log file on the desktop.

As a further aside you may be chasing a quite short lived problem, as I understand it Windows Build 1909 (the H2 build) is nearly upon us, it is in Preview right now. It may not show this problem at all (and is supposed to fix the banding issues of 1903).

Good luck

Terry

If you want to progress the issue, rather than just avoid it by uninstalling KB4512941, compare the DirectShow Graphs between MPC-HC and MC using RO HQ. Maybe there is something obvious.

Ok, in case I could not solve it in any other way I can uninstall the update. Can you guide me on how to compare the DirectShow Graphs, where do I look for them?

Thanks in advance.

I will try adding more options for different refresh rates, I think it does not matter much using VideoClock, correct me if I am wrong.

I checked and the settings in MPC-HC matches exactly the settings in JRiver.

@fedpul

Good luck

Terry

Yeah, I know it is very strange and could be resolved in a future update without any intervention. I will try activate logging, but I do not know if madshi will have time to see it, he is focused on Envy for now.

Thanks for your help Terry!

Can you guide me on how to compare the DirectShow Graphs, where do I look for them?

In MC, just play the video, which in your case will show a black screen, then right-click anywhere on the video, select "DirectShow Filters > Copy graph info to clipboard". Then paste the result somewhere. It should look like my sample above.

I don't know with MPC-HC, but I assume there is a similar function somewhere.

I could not find where it is that option in MPC-HC so i copied the pin info of every filter in a Word file. I will attach the zip with the two, to not post several pages.

Thanks for the tip.

I had a look through those. I can't see any specific issue. Someone else may though, if they look.

Of course, the 'JRiver Video Monitor' and 'JRiver Audio Monitor' filters are in the path for MC, so it is possible there is an issue with the 'JRiver Video Monitor' and KB4512941. But I wouldn't like to try to prove that. If you really wanted to, it might be possible to duplicate the MPC-HC filter path using the MC Custom Video Mode functionality. But I don't know if you can remove the 'JRiver Video Monitor' and 'JRiver Audio Monitor' filters using that.

I think the answer is to uninstall KB4512941 and wait for the next Windows update.

I hoped the new windows 10 update (KB4515384) solved the issue but it did not. I will try with the custom chain from JRiver, but I doubt I could remove JRiver Video Monitor and Audio Monitor.

Thanks for the idea.

Don't get fixated on the DirectShow graph, it has very little influence on this. Its probably just something directly interfering with the video rendering, independent of how the graph is being constructed.
Drivers, and maybe even the OS, have compatibility lists for various applications that make them behave differently, which sometimes results in weird differences between apps.

KB4512941 is known to break some video related things, just leave it at that.
