My handheld drives and devices are only enumerated correctly on startup. Is there an easy way to manually trigger a rescan? If not, which system services does MC rely on to trigger a rescan (inodes, etc.)?

What are you using it for?
I'm curious since MC linux only has manual handheld support.

Sorry for the late reply. It's just a matter of normally having a single USB cord available but wanting to sync my portable devices consecutively (e.g. plug in Sansa, sync, remove Sansa, plugin phone, sync, remove phone, plugin microsd reader, sync, unplug microsd reader).

MC linux doesn't have any special portable device handling. It's all configured manually.
I don't think that would necessarily take a lot of work to get minimal device and and removal handled.
