Title: Beach Ball when switching from menu
Post by: jmrdc on July 17, 2014, 09:54:16 pm
Hi,
Running latest OS and MC with 14GB RAM.  Latest update has me spinning whenever I try to switch from anything on the left side of the menu.

I haven't seen this happen on any of our systems.  Is it actually the left side of the menu that's causing problems or the left side of the view within Media Center (which we call the "tree view").  Can you provide details of exactly what causes the beach ball (for example: "I select Audio from the tree view on the left and then select 3D Albums view").

When I switch from any of the "tree view" menu items, I get the ball.  When I switch from output sources (main, DAC, etc), I get it as well.  Everything works perfectly, but I get the ball and I'm not at the beach  :)

So MC remains responsive, works, you can navigate and play things, but OSX "thinks" it is busy and is showing the beach ball?

I've actually seen this occasionally with MC as well. Though certainly NOT every time I touch anything.  More of a once in a blue moon I have a vague recollection of seeing that, but quitting and relaunching MC (or maybe, worst-case, rebooting) made short work of it.

I'm not sure at all how to solve it, but actually it happening all the time is a pretty good way to maybe get closer.

Can you make it happen, do some stuff, and then gather a log package and post it?  If it is too big to attach (probably) you can use a service like Dropbox or WikiSend to make a temporary URL and then post that.

Also, do you have anything weird about your Library?  Any funky customized views?  Or things you struggled with setting up a Smartlist, expresson column, search or anything else?  Maybe any weird settings or hardware?

Thanks.

I should add...

OSX will behave in this way if the Finder is crashed, or busy.  Usually if the filesystem has some kind of weird locking state (like a Network volume that has disconnected but OSX hasn't figured it out yet and is stuck waiting for timeouts).

When it is in this state, can you try to switch to the Finder and do some stuff to see if it is the finder that is not responding?  Open new windows.  Drag files around on your desktop.  Etc.

Rebooted about 15 mins ago, yet still the same thing.  Not running anything (except Safari to respond).  The JMRC app on the iPad doesn't have any lag.  Let me know how to gather a log, and I'll do it.  The only "weird" thing I have about my library is it's on another bay on my MacPro...maybe the HD is slow?  It only started doing this in the last few (three) builds.

To make a log package: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

As far as this...

The only "weird" thing I have about my library is it's on another bay on my MacPro...maybe the HD is slow?  It only started doing this in the last few (three) builds.

Do you mean big "L" Library (http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Library) or little "l" library?

In other words, do you mean MC's database files, or your media files on disk?

If you mean the Library (the database) then you should have this on your fastest possible disk, whenever possible.  If you mean the media files on disk, then it shouldn't matter where they're stored.  Please refer here for a more thorough discussion of this: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Troubleshooting_Network_and_Slow_Storage

"Do you mean big "L" Library or little "l" library?"

I guess "little library" is where my media files are stored (on another bay in the MP), which is a 3TB disk with 1.2TB free.  All of the application files are stored on my Mac HD.  Log file attached.

Thanks for the bump.  I'd forgotten.  I'll look at this tomorrow if I can.

Can you answer this as well?

Thanks!

Finder and all other programs work normally - I can even run Photoshop (not that I would have a ton of other processes running with MC on) without the ball.  It's just MC for some strange reason.
