Title: Playing 4k Content on MC24
Post by: AussieMark on August 13, 2018, 02:44:32 am
Hi All,

I have tried the search function without success.  Wanting to know whether 4k movies can be ripped and played on JRiver MC24.  IF anyone has done so what do you use to rip (jriver, dvdfab etc) and whether any other setup steps are needed.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers
Mark

Just like with BD these days.  I use a decrypter (eg AnyDVD HD or DeUHD) that runs in the background.  Pop in a UHD BD and MC then rips the unencrypted structure to the HDD.  MC now supports the playback (with Menus) of both BD and UHD BD!  Other options could be to rip to MKV using a prog like MakeMKV to create a MKV of your selected streams, or use MakeMKV to backup the UHD BD to a folder on your HDD and then manually import it into MC.

It's a few months old now but I've updated the OP of the thread on UHD Support in MC - https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,112653.0.html

You are going to need a certain model of ODD ...

ODD = Optical Disc Drive

ok so from that i take it if i rip using dvdfab/ jriver to my hard disk and then import to my library it should play like any other 2k disc.  I guess we will see if the theory plays out in reality.

Sure - I'm watching a UHD BD now in MC.  Have about 130 UHD BD in the library.  With the combination of MC's video features including full menu support I think you will be pleased.

Thanks for this info.  Does MC play HDR10 content as well? Or more specifically, does it pass HDR metadata to the display? I understand MC uses madVR, correct?

Thanks for any additional info on this.

Regards,

Bart

Yes it does pass HDR as long as you set MadVR to pass through HDR.

Well I have tried using red October HD and it is jittery. On standard red October it plays smoothly but picture not as good as HD 2k.

My set up uses a solid stare boot drive with 16mb of ram. The graphics is handled by the Intel on board graphics which can handle 4k.

These are downloads I got from a friend. I tried the largest file which is about 40gb.

Amy tips, ideally I don't want to change pc as its only a year or so old. I will also get a 4k disc and see if I can rip it and play.

Thanks in advance for help.

Cheers

You'll probably have to add a GPU to use ROHQ with 4K/HDR content.

I've not had any luck getting UHD HDR BD content working with iGPU & madVR (ROHQ).  I know that Hendrik has some ideas on some tweaks that may get it to work but it may be awhile before that gets looked at.

My own experimentation with a 7700K is that HDR and 4K can be played well in ROHQ if one ensures that MadVR is running on default settings. A very few tweaks, such as going to windowed overlay mode can be done, but staying close to the default settings seemed to be the best for me.
