How do people do this? The cats are confused and seem to think the soviets are attacking.

Welcome to every morning at my house (assuming the baby doesn't decide that 5:00 am is wake up time like she did this morning). You get used to it eventually (sort of).
-
The curious thing is that, looking out the window, I always find someone who has woken even earlier...

Every Morning When I Was In Germany The First Time, Back In The 70's I Would Listen To Radio Luxembourg.
They Would Say "Good Morning, It's A New Dawn" At 12 Am.
I hear in New York they never sleep.
-
...isn't 6am "normal" (well unless your a teenager in which case it is Noon)?
-
During working days, I try to go to sleep no later than 11:30 pm and wake up at 6:20 am. So, if the kid and cats are quiet I can sleep almost 7 hours. But it rarely happens...
-
We're up between 5:00-5:30am every day. Cats are waiting to be fed by 5:00am. At least 1 neighbor always gets up before us.
-
I get up at 9.

My wake times (and go to sleep times) are wildly inconsistent.
On a regular work day, I get up somewhere between 6:30 and 7:30am, to be at work between 8:30 and 9am (with the kid at school). On a weekend, I sleep until forced to wake up by the family. My pattern for going to bed varies wildly, but "usually" I tell myself I'll be in bed by 1am. In the real world, it is often 2 or 2:30 before I get to sleep. Then, occasionally, like last night, I pass out early because I've been pushing myself like that with 4 hours per night for too long. If something is going on, I can get up as early as maybe 5:00am if needed, but that's the border. If I have to do any earlier, it is far easier to just stay awake from the night before.
I have pretty terrible insomnia. I've gone to work many, many times at 4:30am because I still couldn't sleep so I might as well just get up and go in. It is weird, though. I'm not an insomniac like some, where I wake up in the middle of the night. I have a TERRIBLE time falling asleep, but once out, small scale nuclear war probably wouldn't wake me up. I'm like a rock. It takes me, usually, four separate alarms to wake me up (and the clocks can't be too close to my bed or I smash them).
My issue is basically this: I need 7-8 hours of sleep to feel "good". But, if I get that, then I'm not even remotely tired after 16-17 hours (after 8 hours of sleep, I can usually go a solid 22-23 hours before being tired again). So, unless I moved to Mars (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timekeeping_on_Mars), I'm screwed.
Whatever... I'll sleep when I'm dead. ;D

I have pretty terrible insomnia.
Yep, Me Too
I take One Ambien CR 12.5 Mg And One 50 Mg Of Elavil.
I can sleep about 5 hours, at that point I sometimes get up for an hour and then I can go back to bed.
I have 5 dogs that always seem to be happy to see me.
My Last Cat "Buddy" died some years ago, He was a very good cat, And I don't think I could ever replace him.
They are part of our families, and not just dogs and cats.

The interweb knows all! These guys (http://snoozester.com/The-Wake-Up-Time-Report.snooze) make a chart on "wake up calls" (US based):

As usual, darkpenguin is off the chart.

My boss is in CA so it all works out. :)
3 days in, tho, and I'm really sick of this back brace. Don't miss the sciatic pain, tho.
