I have purchased 2 Hi Res albums which should be natively supported by iFi iDSD.
JRiver down samples these.
Files also do not seem to be correctly identified.
Nigel Armstrong - 2chDSD256 - downloaded from https://www.nativedsd.com
Audio path shows Resample from 1.4MHz to 176.4 KHz.
- what am I missing?

MC's options for DSD playback confuse me a bit because there are so many settings. It would be different if I had a DSD DAC and had actually set up MC to use it! But I *think* I know the proper setting for you. Try:
Tools > Options > Audio > Settings > Bitstreaming > DSD
Here's the wiki article on DSD with MC which should provide more details if necessary:

Good luck.

Thank you for the link Brian and advice.
- this seems to convert everything to DSD first
- DSD should be passed as DSD and PCM as PCM
Am I still overlooking something?

Again, I'm not an expert at all on the DSD settings. I *thought* that the setting to make everything convert to DSD was in Player > DSP Studio > Output Format > Output Encoding .
You normally want to leave output encoding set to None as far as I know. Check that setting to make sure.
Hopefully someone else will pop in here with more complete knowledge of DSD settings.

No. That is not correct. Bitstreaming is exactly what you want. It passes through the DSD formatted files and allows the DAC to decode them, while ignoring everything else and handling it normally.
To re-encode everything to DSD (usually a bad idea) you enable that in the Output Format DSP.

Thank you for further suggestions.
I still don't seem to be able to play back very hi resolution files in their native format
