I'm trying to burn a load of tracks to an MP3 in the root directory in random order. I realise that when I play them on my car MP3 player (unless I turn the random option on) they will play in filename order (please correct me if I'm wrong). So how do I burn them in random filename order?
I've looked in the burn window at options>CD/DVD file naming>custom and there is an there option to 'prefix filename with list order'. Sounds good. So I figure that all I have to do is shuffle the tracks into a random order and select this option. Trouble is that no matter how many times I right click>shuffle and update order the tracks just stay in the same order.
What am I doing wrong?

Mp3 is data.
Data is sorted according to Windows rules ==a,b,c,d,....
Nothing you can do.
MusicMatch has an option to read mp3 in the order you burn it.
But it works only when playing cds in MM.

Sussed it:
Set the option in the burn window to 'prefix filename with list order'.
Shuffle the tracks in PN.
Select All
Click Burn toolbar button.

JLee DO NOT run away like it .......
Do you mean that you can burn a mp3cd with the songs in the order you want and, of cause, playing the cd with song playing as you ordered it ?

Yes. They do think of everything don't they.

This is GREAT news.
Now ,if they ,by miracle ,set the action window to show the files we select , according to my small needs MC will be ,by far ,the burner number one .
I do not know of another burner doing it

I'm running 9.0 and can't seem to find "prefix filename with list order" Any hints?
-
I found the "prefix filename with list order" button; it's under options, in the lower right hand corner of the burn window. Unfortunately, I can't get my playlist to go to the burn window in order; it automatically sorts the files alphabetically.
My goal is not to burn in a random order, but in a specific order that I want. Any hints?
Good vibes,
Eric

Yes - I'm hinting you should download 9.1...

JLee: "Yes - I'm hinting you should download 9.1... "
- thanks for that very helpful hint :), however 9.0 works perfectly for me except for this minor mp3-CD thing. It's not a priority at the moment. I'm loading 5 to 10 albums a day into my database, recently passed 12 000 files, so between recording LPs, ripping CDs and getting them all tagged (with cover art), I don't have the time presently to learn a whole new system. And I have a job too! It'll probably be 10.0 by the time I get around to upgrading! I've learned to live with what bugs there are in 9.0, they rarely interfere with the pleasure of using MC9.0. It's the best media center I've used to date and I am looking forward to upgrading in the future. Jay.

I'd like an option to burn a playlist to the CD. That would follow the order I had selected, and my MP3 CD players will use a playlist if there is one.
It is the last thing I use MMJB for, their CD Burner has the ability to create and add the playlist when I am burning.
Ok, it's the second to last thing<g>. I also use it for looking up song info for tagging since YADB often does not produce results.

MC always burns a playlist to the CD in the root directory. It contains your tracks in the order they were in when you burned them. The filename is "Playlist.m3u".

Are you doing an "Update order" after you sort your playlist? If so, it should stay in that order when you send it to the burn queue.
If that's not the problem, please describe the steps you take so I can reproduce the problem here.
Thanks,
John T.

First ,as far as i remember ,only MusicMatch was able to read the burned mp3cds in the order i put songs.
My discman and MC did not ,but just reversed to the Windows a,b, c order.
JohnT.
Can i do the same when burning artist/album cds?
Let me try to explain myself.
I understand that i can burn a playlist in the order i want.
In the case of a playlist ,there is no need to chose any kind of folder tree for the cd. Just' playlist one'
Now ,let say i would like to burn 7 albums
Artist BB-- albums cc-aa-bb
Artist AA-- albums dd-aa-cc-dd.
Can i do it .
If yes how?
PS: if it is something we can do with MC ,you REALLY needsto make a lot of noise about this feature.
Forums are ,since years, full of people asking how to do it.
And there is not any program doing such a thing.
Well ,maybe MM ,if i did miss the point when trying it....

If you choose "None" for "Folder naming" all tracks will be placed in the root directory of the CD. Now if you check the "Prefix list order..." option in the "File naming/Custom" dialog, your tracks will stay in the order of your burn playlist no matter where you play them.
If you want separate artist/album folders however, and your player won't use the "playlist.m3u" file that gets burned on the CD, you would have to manually rename the CD folders before burning to put them in the order you want. Under the CD in the tree you just "F2" them and rename them like "1 - BB album", "2 - AA album", etc.

Thank you.
