Trying to isolate to a version, when it starting happening but 20.0.131 and 21.0.6 ARE crashing. Error Message: "This program has stopped working and will now be closed". On all three (3) Windows 7 computers in my house. Can't seem to find any pattern or timing to the crash at present. Pulled out AVG virus control, no help. Testing with older version 20.0.124 now (I THINK this was stable).
MC crashes while just open and sitting idle on the desktop.

It looks like one of the devices on your network might be causing the problem. You could try disconnecting the device with the .0.10 address from your network for a while (It looks like a Sony?) and seeing if that resolves the issue. That might help narrow down the problem.
-
Yes that IP is a Sony XBR TV, Android based 4K set. That IS a fairly new addition to the network. The TV was turned OFF during the several crashes of MC today. All crashes occurred while MC was just sitting idle.
I've pulled the ethernet cable from the Sony TV (192.168.0.10) let's see if MC crashes anymore today....
Thx....

I don't know about Sonys, but I know many TVs keep their network access active even when turned "off" (which, with modern electronics devices, mostly means the little LED on the front is off, and not much else). That way you can send commands to them and, perhaps, turn them on, even when off.

Okay as suggested, I pulled the cable on the new Sony 4K Android based smart TV, and, NO MC crashes in more than 24 hours on either of my computers.
TV: Model: XBR65X850C. With Smart TV, Google Cast, Google Play Store, Web browser. TV has the latest version of software on it.
Cool, any suggestions how to diagnose this further?

I've forwarded this topic to someone else. For now, there is a shot in the dark that you could try. You mentioned that the TV is using Google Play Store. By any chance, is the TV also running Google Play Music Manager? If so, is there any way to disable Google Play Music Manager? This might be related to a similar issue from a while ago, but I'm not sure.
-
There is a "Music" App, which appears to be just a player. Allows me to see what's on my DLNA devices on the network and play songs....
There is a "Google Play" App, this is a subscription service. I'm not signed up for or using that service in any way.
-
Okay, that doesn't sound like the issue I was thinking of, so don't worry about that. At this point, I'm hoping Bob or someone else can assist you further, now that we have a better idea of where the issue is coming from.
-
We haven't fixed the problem, but when the next build comes out, please monitor this issue. Go ahead and reconnect the TV. Try to get another log of Media Center crashing and post it here. The new log should contain more information relating to the crash.
-
Tried to post a new log file, but, 994Kb files won't post since limit of 700Kb is imposed on posts. Is there an alternate way to post the crash log?
Also, the Android SW on the Sony 4K TV was updated in the last week, but, no change to the crashing issues with MC....
-
Posting crash file in pieces first 3 files...
-
And the last piece....
-
Can you update to 21.0.11 then wait for a crash and post a log? It should provide more information about the cause of the crash.
-
Okay, just updated to 2.0.11. Will post a crash once it happens....
-
Okay, here is the crash log when running MC 21.0.11....
NOTE: can't include the file "Previous Log.txt" in the zip as it Alone is over the 700Kb upload limit.... (it's 4.4Mb zipped...) So, I've sent just the other three (3) files in the crash log.
Let me know if you need and have a place/way to upload "Previous Log.txt".....
-
I actually do need the Previous Log.txt file. You could e-mail the zip file to me. My e-mail address is brad at jriver dot com. Thank you for your help with this.
-
Ah here's another crash where files size IS small enough to post the "Previous Log.zip" file....
Going to unplug the ethernet on Sony 4K TV, crashing way too often.....
-
There were some changes made for the next build. It might reduce or eliminate the frequency of this crash occurring. Once the next build comes out, go ahead and reconnect the TV. If there is another crash at that point, send me the log so we can get this figured out.
-
Updated to 21.0.15 a couple days back. Still crashing on a regular basis when the Sony 4K TV is connected to the network.....
I'll email you the log file, as it's over the 700kb limit...

Can you enable logging in Media Center to get a log if it crashes again? When you have the zipped log of a crash, upload it here if you can, otherwise, e-mail it to me if it's too large to upload here.

Updated to 21.0.17 still crashing....
Updated to 21.0.18 as requested this AM, reconnected Sony 4K TV, will post log IF there is still an issue. Or, I'll update EOD if no crashes to indicate progress.....

Two things to try. I was having a hanging problem on exit.
The problem only occurred once I upgraded from V20.115. Try installing that version and see if you still crash.
If not, that may indicate some code change that is causing instability.
Matt was able to identify the thread that was causing my Hang problem as the Auto-Import thread.
Once I turned that off, MC works quite well.
This hanging behavior happened on Win 7 and Win 10.
I realize it is different than what you are reporting, but thought the info might be of use.
Hope this helps.

Well, that would provide some useful information. If you could find a version where the crash did not occur, we could work from there. However, we do know where it's crashing. Unfortunately, it's a complicated problem, and it sounds like it would take a lot of time to figure out which version this began with considering the crash can take a long time to occur. It might end up being a lot of time and effort with few results.
