I would like to suggest that the Media Center 9.1 library file format be changed to use relative paths for media files referenced from the library.
Here's why... I wanted to back up my music library to data dvd. I collected a dvd's worth of songs together into a directory, and using the library manager created a new library in this same directory. Everything seemed to work great, and I burned this directory to dvd.
The problem came after I erased the directory from my hard drive, and tried to load the library from the dvd copy. All of the file paths listed for the songs in the library were absolute paths to the old file locations in the deleted directory. Consequently none of the files could be found/played. Re-indexing the dvd directory system was time-consuming and needs to be done each time.
I tried building a new library index for that particular dvd in a fresh directory on my hard drive, but again when I tried to play the songs in the library they couldn't be found. For some reason their file paths were all listed as \Unknown Disc\.... This seems like a secondary bug.
If file paths were stored relative to the library location, then the entire package of songs and library index files could be moved around without breaking references.
Thanks for listening,

If you Import them into MC9 From The DVD then use The Move Option That Should Work Just Fine.
You will need to turn off the read only property however.
really i think MC9 should do this as it is moving the file.
but maybe thats not what your trying to do.

I really don't want to move the files back onto my hard drive. I have too many files for that which is why I'm trying to keep them as mp3s on a dvd.
However, I played around for about an hour this morning trying to play the mp3s directly from the dvd, but with no success. For some reason, building a library index to removeable media just doesn't work. Maybe my only option is to copy them back to my disk each time I want to play them. :-(

did you try:
Look in media Library tree for "Advanced"
then CD&DVD
All your Off Line Music\files should be there
