Hi folks, trying to figure out the issue, must admit I am NOT computer savvy!!!! I have JRiver 21 and have just purchased the Teac, I get music but it is choppy as all get out!!! How can I fix this, I tried quad DSD and then single, no difference ? any help would be most appreciated!!
-
Ok, an update, it appears I can do hi res up to pcm 384 no problems, sounds great , its DSD it has issues with, could this be a ram issu witht the laptop??
-
It could be CPU. it could be bandwidth. The most common cause has been antivirus software.
-
Hmmmmm, so I should turn the antivirus off , ya?
-
Please see the Weird Problems link in my signature. In the first post, follow the antivirus link.
-
What's the specs of the laptop?
DSD, especially multichannel DSD is one of the most intensive CPU operations. It's very well possible the laptop's CPU isn't powerful enough for problem-free DSD playback.
-
Because CPU has been suggested as a possible cause, you should run a JRiver MC benchmark on your system:
Help > Benchmark > Run Benchmark
Then report your benchmark results back here. I would cut and paste the whole thing, just for completeness.
Brian.

Here it is, oh and I uninstalled Norton and still not working.

Not a very powerful machine.
-
I got a TEAC UD-501. With my server machine (up)converting to DSD does not work either ( ~1.300 points), meaning the sound stutters. Using my main machine everything is perfect (~ 4.100 points).
So as said here before, it seems your notebook is not powerful enough... :(
-
Ok, this is great to know!!! I can use my main machine to run it, just wanted to make sure I did not do something wrong!! At least I know what the problem is!! Thanks all!!
-
Ok, trying it on my main machine, more then enough space power, yadda yadda yadda and still getting the same thing!!! Going to try uninstalling norton and malware to see if that helps...................
Update....I adjusted the buffering to 500 and quad DSD on the main computer and it will allow 1x DSD from the laptop, anything else I can do to get higher DSD, any way to go more then 500 for buffering??
-
I have both the UD501 (which is the same thing as the 503 but without the high-end headphone amp I think) and the AD301 Teacs. On my old machine the sound would degrade by about the 4th song I played, it was very frustrating, it got choppy then distorted then dropped out. It turns out it was running some kind of windows service for "malware" that was causing the problem. Then I bought an I5 Surface Pro tablet and a dock, all is good now, never a glitch even playing DSD or SACD iso's, 24 bit flac, APE, and even > 9,000 kbps FLAC rips of LP's!
Maybe try installing Windows 10 before you buy a new machine? Win 10 is pretty stable and seems to have fewer background services running.

I have removed Norton and Malware from the laptop, all good for single DSD. As for upgrading to windows 10, I have done that already. Anything else you can think of or suggest?? Again thanks to all for helping out, NOT computer savvy unfortunately..................

Did you reboot, too?
-
I wouldn't switch to Win10 until you've explored a little more. Windows is pretty good about background processes not causing problems.
If there is a process causing problems, it's far more likely to be some third party "security" software.

Dumbass question from me, reboot?? What am I rebooting??

Already did update to 10 about a month ago, actually ok with it!! I had uninstalled the Norton and Malware and still got the stuttering upstairs on the big computer, it was only when I adjusted the buffering that it would play the quad DSD ( bloody magnificent I might add)!!! With the laptop it will play single DSD ( also sounds lovely) hoping I can get Quad from that one also though............................... If I cannot with the laptop above what do I need to look for in terms of power enough to run the quad???

My Surface Pro Tablet is the only computer I use anymore. I got that and 3 docking stations for way less than the price of 3 computers. I keep one dock in the office, another in the master bedroom and another wired into the receiver/theater in the family room, I'm getting a fourth dock to install in the basement game room soon. If I want media in the bedroom from bed, I grab the tablet and dock it in the bedroom stereo/tv system, if its movie night I grab the tablet and dock it in the dock for the home theater setup, if I want to work I grab the tablet and dock it in the office to my dual monitored desk and office DAC with all the usb peripherals, etc. Much easier than maintaining multiple computers, its a tablet, but it never leaves the house.
I have no intention of ever buying a desktop machine again that I can think of. This may not be for you but you asked. Mines an i5 but plenty fast, I my spring for the i7 Surface (or whatever they have) in a few years.
Thank you!! Would this be enough to run Quad?? This is what I have now in the laptop--Intel Pentium T4200 / 2 GHz

I'm confused. You keep saying Quad DSD. Are you trying to play DSD256 files? (quad rate DSD) Or are you trying to upsample to quad rate DSD?
If you're trying to upsample, I think you're wasting your time. You can't create new information that's not in the audio files to begin with.
What kind of files are you playing? PCM? DSD? Single rate DSD? Double rate DSD? Have you compared sound quality in different configurations? For example, pure PCM, played at it's native rate. Then DSD played as PCM at 352.8. Then DSD bitstreamed directly. These are just a few of the permutations.
Maybe I should have just asked this to start with: What are you trying to achieve with this configuration?
Brian.

Uninstalled Norton and disabled defender, so pretty sure it is neither of those. Almost positive its CPU, working on that as we speak!!

A little of both! I have ripped some cd's and am upsampling them ( I know this causes some debate with folks--not looking for a debate as to what I can hear or can't.....) I just want to be able to upsample to all that my device is capable of!!! I have a few DSD files that i have purchased that I would also like to try!!
