Title: MC 21 crashing systematically after 2 or 3 minutes playing
Post by: dominique-tanguy on November 07, 2015, 08:47:31 am
MC21 is crashing systematically. I reversed to MC 20 and it is working perfectly well, with the same Library on the same compter, a NUCi5 running Windows 8.1.

I decided to take this opportunity to install Windows 10, and I reinstalled the latest build of MC 21. Same problem. I installed MC 20 on Windows 10, and it works flawesly.

I have recorded a log file that should document the crash. I could not find where to send the log file... here  a link to the logfile hosted by Dropbox:

Best regards,

Dominique

Any antivirus running?

Windows defender.

Should I deactivate?

Just tried, antivirus deactivated, same problem... I still see MD 20 driver in the list (Loudspeaker ikon, right handside). Could this create a conflict? I am using A Yamaha Steinberg Asio driver for output.

Try reinstalling your license.

Turn off auto import.

I have reinstalled the licence, et deactivated auto import (removing all folders and tasks).

No effect, same problem...

Gosh, my apologies, I didn't even see the link above (I've gotta get my eyes checked!).

If you haven't already (so you don't need to disable it) you can read this article on how to tame Windows Defender to work with MC better: http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Taming_Windows_Defender

Other than that, hmmm, does it crash when doing something specifically or is it just random?

I'll jump in here and report the same thing.  I first noticed this a couple days ago.  JRiver will close no matter what's it's doing.  Launch and just let it sit there.  Same thing.

I tried un and reinstalling the following:

JRiver 20 and 21 (reinstalled only 21)
video card
recent Windows updates (via system restore)

No luck yet.

Running Kaspersky Internet Security 15.something and JRiver seemed to run a little longer with it disabled, but result was the same.

It isn't logging a crash, unfortunately.

But one of the last things it's doing is processing RAW files:
\\DLINK-0A1C96\Volume_1\Pictures\2015\2015-09-27\_DSC2630.ARW

Try turning that off.  Probably auto-import.

Good luck!

You need to look at all your security software, antivirus and firewalls in particular. A smart software firewall can block network activity and could therefore cause a crash.

Also DaveMan538, when you disable a third party antivirus solution such as Kaspersky, typically Windows will enable Windows Defender in its place. If that happened, you need to also disable Windows Defender, or tame it using the link Awesome Donkey provided.

I prefer to never put my security software into "Silent" or "Automatic" mode or the equivalent, so that it always tells me when it is doing something, such as blocking an application. That makes it much easier to diagnose such problems.

Not having the same issue, but it might be worth a shot.

Kaspersky, Windows Defender and firewall all disabled.  Still shuts down. :P

I'm starting to suspect a hardware problem of some kind. There are two other PC's in the house with Windows 10 (one with Kaspersky, one with McAfee).  No problems on those boxes.

This setup has been working fine for 3 or so years.  Just started this a few days ago.  Tried backing out of all known updates to OS and apps with no luck.

Same problem here.  NUCi5, Windows 8.1, MC 21 crashing and closing without warning after a couple of minutes.  Same problem pops up on a Lenovo X240 laptop and Windows 10.  No problem with MC 20 on either computer, and have reverted to that version until issue is resolved (expect a programming bug).

Uninstall Kaspersky to test.

Please read Matt's comment above about RAW files.

Make sure you have the latest build from the top of this board.

The RAW file import was a useful idea (I keep my Lightroom files on the the same NAS).

I checked again the autoimport status. Last time I checked, I could see a list of folders on the NAS, that I deleted. Now, I saw that despite removing the paths to the folders, I had the 3 first options on. I removed them.

I am now playing radio flawlessly since 30 minutes. I will try next with a file.

Thank you for your support!

We switched to a new RAW library in 21.0.13 and had some crashes reported.  This was fixed in 21.0.17.

21.0.19 is available at the top of this board.

Please report the version you're using.

My current build is 21.0.15.

I played a full album, and no crash! I will upgrade to 21.0.19 now...

It seems that the problem is solved for me.

Thank you!

Moved to .19 and it seems to be holding.  Looks like the RAW file issue might have been the problem.  Under the older version, I removed a path from auto import that contained RAW files and it seemed to work also.

Thanks everybody for your help!  This community and the support from the folks in the project are a MAJOR reason JRiver continues to be my go-to application for media.
