Title: Search for Genre
Post by: FelixDaHousecat on November 11, 2015, 04:03:32 pm
I don't seem to be able to search for genre anymore. When I type a genre in the search box it doesn't ever show it in results. Have I done something wrong? Can anyone help please?

As a double check, see if you can explicitly search by genre:

[Genre]=Rock

(or use Pop or Blues, or Jazz, or some other genre you're fairly sure is in your library.)

If that works, then somehow search isn't using Genre as a default search anymore.  You can check to see if it's still set up as a default:  Tools > Options > Library & Folders > Manage Library Fields > (go find Genre and click on it) .  Then look at the box in the lower left "Default Search Field" and see if it's checked.

On the other hand, it's probably something simple that I'm missing.  It seems too strange that this would be unchecked, or that somehow all of your files would suddenly not have a value for genre...

Hi Brian

Thanks for your reply. I cannot do the explicit search (how odd!) and Genre is set up as a default. Even more odd, the genre shows up when I search in a playlist but not when I search in files view!!! Maybe a reinstall will fix it.

Didn't fix it! It's not a deal breaker but slightly irritating!

Go to a files view that shows everything (or most everything).  Make sure the Genre column is displayed.  If it's not, right click on the headers and add it so you can see.  Now see what's in the genre column.  I wonder if somehow a mistake deleted a bunch of your genre values.  Or if a bunch got changed?  I'm totally guessing.

Hiya, Genre column is showing and they are all there. If I click on the arrow next to the genre it then shows all my files with that genre so i guess I can do it that way. But, I used to be able to search for the genre and it would show up in suggestions and I could select the suggestion. For some reason the suggestion doesn't show up anymore. Does it work for you? The issue for me started when I upgraded to 21.

Yes, Genre searches work fine for me.  I just tried and suggestions work too.  But... I'm running the Mac version of MC21, which is almost identical... but it's not the exact same version.  Hopefully someone else will reply here with some more useful info and/or whether Genre suggestions work for them on the Windows version of MC21.

Oh boy!

Folk, Classical, Alternative Rock and Slow Rock aren't giving me suggestions!

Hard Rock is.

So there's something broken, but not totally broken.  I'm riddled, but I'll sure take a look tomorrow.

Could this issue be related to this one: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=101281.0 ?

Both are dealing with Search. Maybe this problem is already fixed in MC21.0.20.

Well the same bad behavior isn't happening at work.

I'm hopeful that means it's been fixed and just not released as a build yet.

Stay tuned for the next coming builds and please let me know if the problem doesn't go away.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you're right. This does seem to be related, so hopefully it will be fixed in build 20.
