Title: Video Naming Convention
Post by: jroyale on November 18, 2015, 07:45:45 pm
Apologies if this is a repeat but I have searched and didn't find quite what I was looking for.

I'm about to do a big import of video files and I'd like to get it right the first time.  Most of the folders don't have the year of the movie and I'm curious if this will cause an issue ie not scraping at all (I understand it may scrape the incorrect info if there are multiple movies with the same name).  Then inside the folder again is simply the name of the movie.

Z:\Movies\Iron Man\Iron Man.mkv

If this is an issues what is the naming convention for folders then file.

Also, i have some folders that have old jriver sidecar xml files in them.  I think from version 14.  Is it better to remove those or not?  I want to make sure tmdb scrapes for movie images.

Thanks.

MC does not use a "strict" naming convention.  It tries to parse many common naming conventions:

The filenaming structure you described should work fine most of the time (as you indicated, as long as there are no movie name collisions). Metadata in existing JRSidecar XML files will "overrule" data MC pulls from Carnac.  If the information in the sidecar files is correct, there's no reason to delete them, as they'll be used.

MC should still do the metadata lookup and get cover art on import, though it won't fill anything explicitly listed in the sidecar file (it won't override a sidecar file automatically). But otherwise, it still does it.  If any get through with missing data, or stuff from the sidecar is wrong, you can always select them and do the lookup manually.  More info on that system is here:
