Title: No Centre Channel When Playing DTS MA HD 7ch (Star Wars) **SOLVED**
Post by: thezone on November 23, 2015, 03:18:47 pm
Hey guys, a strange behavior is occurring when I play any of the 6 Star Wars movies:

I have set bitstreaming to: None and setting channels in DSP to "Source" in order to use video clock and I am getting no center channel during playback. I have tried a few different Blu ray iso's and it appears that all all other sound formats are playing fine with all channels present that includes movies with 6ch or 8ch including DTS MA HD 7.1, DTS MA HD 5.1, True HD 5.1ch and True HD 7.1ch will all play fine both 48Khz and 96Khz and I can hear all channels through the receiver but when I play any of the Star Wars blurays which all have DTS MA HD 7 ch sowing as the soundtrack the center channel is lost! All other channels are there just no center, its not downmixing the channel just disappears.

Why do the Star Wars blurays have a different soundtrack to all other movies?

Any ideas!

I'm stumped!

What did the Audio Path show? i.e. Was the output 7.1 as expected?

Oh wait, is it just DTS MA HD 7 ch, as in 6.1 channels? If so, that is a special case. There was some discussion on 6.1 channel playback recently. Maybe a search will find some good information. This for example: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=93647.0

If you have these Blu-rays (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Wars-The-Complete-Saga-Blu-ray/14903/), it is 6.1 channel. Maybe your center channel is being sent to the rear right or something?

Other people seem to be having trouble with audio on these Blu-rays (http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=184235) as well.

Thanks RoderickGI yes I think I have a solutiuon. I switrched the DSP Studio channels from "Source #" to "5.1 Channels (inside a 7.1 container)". I have no idea what is happening but the center speaker is back!

I have set mixing to "No upmixing or Downmixing" can anyone confirm if I leave this setting whether or not MC is doing some sort of processing with the aforementioned channel setting? I would ideally perefr to have source in source out which works fine for everything except the star wars 6.1 soundtracks.

Otherwise is there a way of setting a shortcut command to toggle dsp studio Channels from "Source #" to "5.1 Channels (inside a 7.1 container)"?

Thanks for your help.

Actually I found this ol thread which seems to advise that JRSS is doing very minimal processing.

I think you can set this up to be totally automatic.  Do I understand correctly that you only need a "special" configuration if the audio source is 6.1?  If so, you can make a new Zone.  Set up the zone exactly like your current zone, including the same audio device, and everything else that's relevant.  Then set the DSP to do your channel mapping (5.1 inside 7.1).  Now here's the trick:

Set up zone switch.  Make the zone switch rule for your 6.1 channel zone so that it gets activated only when the number of channels is greater than 6 (which is 5.1).  [Channels] is a field in MC, so you can just write a little rule in zone switch and bingo bango, it's all automatic!  Just make sure to set up your zone switch so that it stops playback in your main zone when switching to the 6.1 zone.

Hey Brian sounds like a good idea Ive never thought to use zones before. I'll have to do some research on this.

I don't need the new zone to play if there are more than 6 channels as 7.1 works fine its only 6.1 that's the problem. Is there a way to configure the zone to only activate if the channels are equal to 7?

I can't remember where this ended up - I "thought" it was fixed but.... Hendrik would be the authoritative source.  This was the latest I could find:

Sadly many HDMI setups have problems when dealing with 6.1 content, since there is two valid ways to organize the 6.1 channels, and I'm not aware that its strictly specified somewhere which to use..
Supposedly HDMI can carry information about the speaker assignment, but as it looks the HDMI output on graphics cards doesn't seem to set it.

I'll try to double check our setup and see if I spot something wrong.
Might take a couple days tho.

Stupid thing is, it (6.1ch playback) works perfectly when bitstreaming, only an issue when bitstreaming is tuned off.

This isn't complete, but may get you started:

Ok, I didn't totally get that.  5.1 plays fine.  7.1 plays fine.  2.0 plays fine.  6.1 needs special treatment.  Then sure, that's super easy.  Your Zone Switch rule would just say:

[Channels] = 7

There's a search wizard you can use to set up the rules if you don't want to type them.  I recommend it.

Zones are a powerful concept that can do a lot of tasks related to this one.  Good luck!
