Title: DSD256 (quad DSD) possible over DoP?
Post by: sandalaudio on December 01, 2015, 07:56:08 pm
Hi. I wanted to play a DSD256 (quad DSD, 11.2896MHz, whatever) on MC 21 with my new Chord Mojo.
Apparently Mojo does support DSD256 but only via DoP.

JRiver can do DSD256 on KS or ASIO direct (I tried on iFi micro iDSD) but can't seem to do it on DoP. It caps out at DSD128.

Is there a way to send DSD256 via DoP from JRiver to Mojo?

Just a quick question, do you have bitstreaming enabled?

Yes. All configurations for DSD playback is fine. I can use all of my other DACs with DSD256 natively without any issues.

Chord Mojo doesn't support DSD via native ASIO. It needs DoP.

On JRiver's ASIO "Device Settings" menu, there is a tickbox that says "DSD bitstream in DoP format".

When this is unticked then Chord Mojo is silent.
When this is ticked, Chord Mojo will play DSD up to DSD128, but becomes silent on DSD256.

After much searching online, I think I realised that it's a known bug/issue with JRiver that it can't do DSD256 via DoP.

I can do it fine on Audirvana, Foobar, etc, but JRiver resamples to 176.4kHz PCM and simply says "Not using enough bits to output the input correctly", which is wrong.

Is there any workaround to get DSD256 to work via DoP?

I don't want to use other programs just to play these albums natively.

^

What version are you using? From MC v21.0.4 (released September 2nd) the following feature was added..

"NEW: Added the output format "Encode as 4xDSD in DoP format" for 4x DoP delivery."

DSD256 is 2x DSD isn't it?

If so, it should work fine over DoP.

You'll need to set MC to bitstream in Options > Audio.

^ No, DSD256 is 4x DSD.

I'm not sure if 4x DSD will bitstream as DoP.  I would think so, but I'm just not sure.

Well I thought that is what you guys said in the release note "NEW: Added the output format "Encode as 4xDSD in DoP format" for 4x DoP delivery."

I don't have a 4x DSD/DoP capable DAC, so this is untested, but I enabled 4x DSD DoP bitstreaming in the next build, let us know how it goes.

I'm using 21.0.24

Bitstreaming (DSD) is enabled.
Chord Mojo offers ASIO, WASAPI and Kernel Streaming.

In all cases, when I play a DSD256 (11289600Hz) DSF file via DoP, JRiver gives an error message:
"Playback could not be started using the format 1.4MHz 64bit 2ch
This format would work: 176 kHz 64bit 2ch"

This is a bit weird since DoP encapsulation of DSD256 would just need 768kHz which Mojo supports.
At least that's the PCM sample rate used by Audirvana and Foobar for doing DSD256 DoP

Wait for the next build to be released, *hopefully* this will be fixed. :)

That sounds promising. I'm looking forward to it.
Ideally I want to have everything playing through the MC since it's a great software

I will probably start a new thread, but DSD256 MC using the iFi iDSD micro works very well but I have a repeatable crash with Pause/Resume.

DSD256 ok using iFi ASIO with MC; iFi Kernel Streaming has the pause/resume bug.

I have been using Audirvana lately. I find JRiver to sound a little better if DSP effects are enabled. Audirvana sounds better to me than JRiver if DSP effects are not enabled. Is there a way I could try and incorporate JRiver's DSP effects, specifically the "Environment" and "Surround Field" with the "Audio Units" section in Audirvana. Just wondering if there are any plugins online that I can use with Audirvana or if I can somehow use the plugin files within the JRiver folder itself?

You'd probably have to ask the Audirvana people.

Or ask at Hydrogenaudio (http://www.hydrogenaud.io).

I can't get DSD256 working either at this point on my Vega DAC, but my iFi iDSD works fine.

Sound like an Auralic Driver problem?
