Title: GetRight or GoZilla?
Post by: jleerigby on August 30, 2003, 03:54:53 am
Can't get broadband and my dial up connection often gets cut off during downloads which is very annoying.  So I guess I need a little help from a good download manager.

Simple question - which of the above mentioned products should I go for.  Does anyone have any recommendations?

DO NOT USE StarDownloader.  It has caused problems for several users when downloading Media Center.

I use Fresh Devices 'Fresh Download', works great and I haven't seen any spyware issues.

I use Net Transport - downloads MC fine. More controls than the other freebies. Also you can download media streams (but i've not tried).

I uses flashget.

http://www.amazesoft.com/

Haven't given me any problem with d/l of media center. Have my line disrupted several time while d/ling sometimes. :)

One of the best d/l manager I have used before. Comparing to GetRight, Gozilla, DAP.

I use leechget (www.leechget.de). Very nice. Very free. Browser integration not as good as DownloadAccelerator PLus though (but who wants all that spyware anyway)

GoZilla used to be good, but that was three years ago. I have used GetRight since that without any problems. I have no idea what went wrong, but GoZilla suddenly took of in a direction I can't see anybody would want. More confusing, less efficient.

Thanks guys.  I didn't realise there were so many to choose from.  I'll have a look round those web sites and choose one for a trial.

Yes!  It's called "Download Manager".  Good point.

Me again.

If you are ready to buy ,in this case GetRight IS THE ONE.

Concerning Stardownloader it is rock solid ,i mean you can download for days in a row non stop and Stardownloader will not mess around.
Now ,if it makes problem downloading MC , just do not use it to download it.

I do not trust MC downloadmanager enought  to spend one hour filling it with downloads and see what happens...

Thanks Zev.  I'm gonna try GetRight first but thanks to everyone here there's plenty more to try if that doesn't work out.  I'm just so jealous of you lot with cable!

Maybe you could be more specific.

You might also want to take a look at Internet Download Manager at http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com.  It's my favorite of all the ones mentioned and is spyware and adware free.  They offer a 60 day free trial.

Has anyone used the one with MC?

Also,
What would be the bennefit of using a download manager? I had one with MSN8 and never really found a use for it.

Being able to pause and resume d/l. Schedule download. Download a file with using multiple part (heard it increase your d/l speed but haven't really seen any difference yet).

That's about it. Oh and able to queue up d/l.

I think it may not be true.  In our case, we see a lot of connections sometimes, but the download is still limited by our bandwidth or the bandwidth of the person downloading.  It may even have a negative effect since it may create an unnecessary load on our server.

One person/One connection is what I believe.

Agree with you on that. I always download the file one whole chunk.

One advantage some of the download managers have is that they can download from multiple sources, and find mirrors automatically. GetRight does this, and it works very well if your bandwidth is higher than any individual server that has the file you wish to download.  Not downloading multiple streams from the same source, but downloading streams from multiple sources.

This doesn't really apply to downloading Media Jukebox betas, because it's only available from one source. But I've downloaded other files from all over the world and gotten combined rates of over 2mb/sec where any one of the servers gave me only like 60b/sec alone.

I'm not specifically recommending GetRight, I'm only stating the value of that particular feature. I'm guessing other download managers have it as well. I've never really checked.

You are right.
When using it to download from Emusic ,many times it closeed  alone and all the queue was lost.
Now , cannot tell you when , but ,of cause before the new Emusic politic.

If you just download MC built and some program from time to time ,you do not need a download manager ,this is right.

Now if you download tons of files from a site - like Emusic before ,or MP3.com or any of the paying sites ,in this case a download manager is of great help.
Download accelerators are sometimes not that good.
I remember that all of my files had a Click after few seconds when using Download Accelerator.

I reccomened net transport as mentioned above.  Very good, allows multi part donloading, like the poster said allows you to download streams which is very useful eg you can record INternet radio broadcasts or online concerts in rm format plus it can be running in the background all the time but not linked into IE.  It has a drop target where you caneasily drag links to that you want it to download.  Highly reccomended especially for the stream recording functions...

Well at first glance GetRight looks pretty good.  I've set it up to DL build 243 in the middle of the night (it's 11pm where I am and 5pm for the MC guys).  If all goes well I'll have a new build to play with while I eat breakfast. If this works I really will be impressed as the build hasn't even been posted yet!
