Would you mind removing the 1/8 notes from your avatar?  1/8 notes don't belong here.

Maybe he means his "Personalized Picture" / Avatar?

"Ugly Note" - Would be a cool band name - Does it already exists?

"How to Delete Ugly Note" would be a nice song name then...

What's a 1/8 note?

What's an avatar?

Sorry. I'm only recently literate.

Ah, the 2000 year old man.  I remember you now.

An avatar is the image that you've chosen to go with your name when you post.  It can come from our site or you can have it linked to one from another.

An 1/8 note is an 1/8 of a full note.  Maybe somebody who really knows can explain better.

Well, heck, maybe I can remember 7th grade orchestra if I really concentrate.

In 4/4 time, there are four beats per measure.  A 1/4 note four times?  King?  Help....

It's odd, but I think I could probably still read the music, but I don't think I could explain it.

I was able to hold my breath yesterday for about a minute and a half.  That's a start, isn't it?

I do know when my son brought a trumpet home from school. i could still play it from memory but what notes they were and how long they were is another story.

I'd be glad to.

An 1/8 note is known as a Quaver.  And....

A whole note is known as a Semibreve (4 Crotchets)
A half note is known as a Minim (2 Crotchets)
A quarter note is known as a Crotchet
An eighth note is known as a Quaver
A sixteenth note is known as a semiquaver
A 32nd note is known as a Demisemiquaver
A 64th note is known as a Hemidemisemiquaver
An MC is known as a bloody master piece.

The ugly note.

The brazen blue notation that screams out and obliterates the cool look and text on the main window of 9.1.242. The Artist's window.

I don't recall seeing this egregious icon on earlier versions of MC9.1.

Suddenly it was there assaulting my eyeballs.

Has nobody else seen it?

To understand what an eight note is, you have to understand time signatures. A time signature is given as X/Y, where Y is the note that gets a single beat and X is the number of beats in a measure. So, for example, 3/4 time has three beats per measure, and a quarter note gets one beat. 6/8 time has six beats per measure, and an eight note gets one beat.

Time signatures alone don't tell you everything you need to know about the music (for example, 6/8 can be counted with an accent on the first beat only, an accent on the first and third beat, or possibly some other way) but there are certain "understood" ways of interpreting them. Often times, the composer will add notation that tells you how to interpret the music (a "waltzy" 3/4 has a very different feel than a "jig" in 6/8 even though both of them are based on groups of three; a "march" in 4/4 has a very different feel than a "reel" in 4/4 even though they've got the same time signature).

So the time signature tells you which note gets one beat. Then, you need to know the durations of each note. The durations are:

A whole note.
A half note = 1/2 of a whole note.
A quarter note = 1/2 of a half note.
An eight note = 1/2 of a quarter note.
A sixteenth note = 1/2 of an eight note.
A 32nd note = 1/2 of a sixteenth note.

In theory, you could go on forever, but in reality very few musical pieces actually use notes faster than a 32nd note.

It should be noted that one of the eight notes in the afore mentioned avatar is actually a dotted eight. A "dotted" note means that you add one half of the note's duration to itself. So a dotted eight note = 1/8 note + 1/16 note, which is the same duration as three 1/16th notes or 75% of the duration of a quarter note.

The other major type of modification to a note's duration is the "triplet". A triplet is played by playing three of a note in the same time that it would take to play two of the next longer note. So an eight note triplet is three eight notes played in the time of two quarter notes. Triplets are a common embellishment in Irish and Scottish folk music.

Enjoy!

Translation (If I remember our American conductor's terminology correctly):

2 notes = a breve
1 note = semibreve
1/2 note = minim
1/4 note = crotchet
1/8 note = quaver
1/16 note = semiquaver
1/32 note = demisemiquaver (?)

etc, etc

Good days (early 80's)...playing Neal Hefti, Aaron Copeland et al and trying to emulate that incredible brass sound of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (I played trombone at the time...I was one of the few people in town who could read four different clefs (treble, tenor, alto & bass) on the instrument....good bragging rights there!

BTW,

measure = bar

Man, that American dude really taught us how to relax and enjoy playing....We had mostly been brought up in the stiff upper lip British brass band culture which meant death if you dared play with anything less than emotionless precision........glares and withering dirty looks from the WW2 generation conductor made us too scared to infuse any emotion into a performance.....

Getting shat out afterwards was the ultimate punishment & humiliation......

Our performances must have been similar to reading a book in monotone.

I think that's why a few of us found playing in rock bands such a relief...

These (http://www.musicex.com/YaBBImages/avatars/musicnote2.png) are sixteenth notes.  Look closely at the bars connecting the two.

I also like the new media icons.

There is just one ugly, very ugly note, impossible not to remark it. And if you have a list in front of you, there are thousands and thousends of this media icon, ugh. It is far to strong for the decent pixos. I don't like it at all.

oh

well i did not think it was "Ugly"

when it is blownup 5000% it does look kind of bad.

that note is in the default folder, but it is on an image banner so you can't just change the "note"

maybe a single note would be better.
