This bowled me over; he had just released a new album last week! Such a shame.
I had picked up a copy of the new album last week, but I haven't had the chance to listen to it in depth yet. With song titles like "Lazarus," I expect he knew the album would be his swan song.

my next door neighbor back in 1974 was an Upper Darby police officer, and he got us tickets to David Bowie concert, this was the first concert I ever went to.

I was really shocked and saddened to wake up to this news this morning.
The radio stations here in the UK (at least the ones I listen to) have been playing mostly Bowie all day today. I've heard some real gems that I'd forgotten about.
I can't even play any of my Bowie albums today because of a hard disk crash in my MC server :(
