I thought this would be an excellent opportunity for JRiver to get the world's leading Vis creator into their net!
If you don't know who he is, check his web page:
http://www.geisswerks.com
It would be awesome if he did some work for MC!!!

Woot woot woot woot woot woot woot!
Er... not wooting because Mr. Geiss is going to be unemployed... in today's market, that's a scary thing indeed. Ryan, from a guy who's always admired your work, good luck, sir.
Now... if we could just get him to port Monkey over to MC9. Chicks dig Monkey. It's a known fact.
:D
-
Thanks. We'll try to talk with him.
-
He's good...no doubt. The viz stills from WinAmp are incredible.
10-27
-
I heard a rumor that Microsoft is courting him to do work for WMP9. Just an FYI.
-
I have some yard work for him to do.
Willing to pay min wage
-
I tried talking to him a while back about porting some of his stuff over to MC. At the time he wasn't interested. Might be a different story if there was a paycheck involved.
The guy's good. No doubts about that. If JRiver could bring him on board, MC would benefit immensely.
-
duh - call me thick - whats so great about this guy? who is he?
I'm presuming he made some plugins for winamp - what else? Why does that make him so wow?
-
He's made some of the best visuals for Winamp ever, period. His stuff is insane, gorgeous to behold, and really mind-twisting. The mathematics behind all of it must be drool-inducing.
It seems to me that if J River can't get him to build plug-ins specifically for MC, why not get someone to make a plug-in that will allow MC to use any Winamp2 VIS plug-ins?
-
Why does that make him so wow?
i'm in the same boat
Matt, knows all this and more i am sure
look at his 3d vis, thats not kid's stuff.
I think JimH was just being polite
-
MJ used to support Winamp plugins. Unfortunately, the API was never fully implemented and then ultimately dropped. I pleaded to have the entire API implemented specifically so I could use Geiss' visualizations in MJ, but they decided to make MJ more independent. I can't say that I really blame them, but it was a big loss, IMO.
-
No offense to Matt, but his 3D visualizations don't come anywhere near some of Geiss' stuff. Especially Smoke or Milkdrop.
If you have never seen them, download Winamp 2 and Ryan's plugins from geisswerks.com and check them out.
I realize tha a lot of people here don't care about skins or visualizations, but for those of us who do... wow. They're just amazing.
-
Well, if we can't convince JR to change the API back (and, like you, I don't blame them) and JR can't convince Geiss to create a specific plug-in for MC, then maybe we can convince Geiss to create standalone versions of Geiss 1 & 2, MilkDrop, and Monkey that will respond to whatever audio is playing. It'd be better than nothing!
A very friendly e-mail campaign might be in order here.
-
I realize tha a lot of people here don't care about skins or visualizations
maybe i am in that boat
I see nothing in Winamp that impresses me.
-
See... neither do I. EXCEPT for the visualizations. And maybe the skinning engine. Both Winamp and Sonique have really powerful skinning engines. MC is catching up in that department, but there's still a long way to go. I'd say that MC right now is about where Sonique was before Sonique 2. And MC is ahead of Winamp 2 in the skins department.
Sometimes it's just nice and relaxing to have music playing and some really funky visualizations going...
-
I think JimH was just being polite
You must be thinking of someone else.
-
Let's see... Geiss makes visualizations, the biggest waste of CPU cycles ever conceived. Ashland made Monkey's Audio, and helped make Media Jukebox and Media Center.
I say forget the former, and give the latter a big raise. ;D

For all of you that don't believe what Ryan's all about, here a 10 minute exercise:
1. Download and install Winamp
2. Download and install any of Ryan's work, preferrable Smoke, Milkdrop, GeissII or Monkey
3. Play
4. Double-click on the VU meter.
5. Be amazed.
Maybe you don't care for visualizations, but you'll see why he's the best! I cry each day I can't implement his work into my Track Info... :/
-
He is definitely talented. I just installed a bunch of his vis plugins, and Monkey (http://www.nullsoft.com/free/monkey/) is my favorite of the bunch.
But I still won't use any of them. :o Maybe if I had something with more horsepower than an old Athlon 1.4.
-
Ryan uses pure assembly language for his visuals. You can't get much more streamlined than that. :P
I'll say it again, none of the praise I (or the others I believe) am giving Ryan are meant to diminish Matt or the other guys at JRiver in any way. They just have different areas of expertise. Ryan specializes in visualizations. As such, they kick a lot of ass. Matt specializes in the audio side of things, and because of that MAC\MJ\MC kicks a lot of ass.
It's possible to admire somebody without it reflecting badly for somebody else.
And would it really be a bad thing if Ryan did go to work for JRiver? Or port his stuff over? Nobody says you would have to use it.
-

I second that. I have the deepest respect for the whole JRiver crew (and I hope you know that!).
But still, to get Ryan to port his vis' to MC would be a huge step for JRiver success. It would mean that MC is top of the line in the visualization area as well as in the audio/management section = a whole new bunch of arguments to get MC!!!

I'am with you.
And ,as a rule ,people may be unhappy about some aspect of the program ,but they never really show disrespect to the GonzoMojoWonderfull JRiver staff

OT: I just fixed a major typo in what I said above, and then went and fixed it in the two posts that followed (since they quoted me). What I actually wrote didn't make much sense, and then my own sense of "perfection" wouldn't let me leave the other two alone... so in case anybody notices... not that anybody would care probably...

what post?

Isn't this an abuse of power? :o :P ;D

I'm only trying to impose my own perverted sense of beautification upon this forum and it's dwellers. I don't see what could be construed as abusive with that...

ouch....that's cold! ;)
-
I remember him from my Winamp days years ago. His Vis were simply unsurpassed.
After seeing this theread I visited his site and downloaded his "Dremples" desktop wallpaper thingamajiggy, pretty cool. It is a vis wallpaper for windows, which surprisingly seems to use little system resources.
His ScreenSaver looks great but I havent gotten it to work sound activated as of yet.
If he was to do some vis work for MC it would be AWESOME.
I love the 3d stuff that Matt did, but Geiss is just a different type of visualization.

How 'bout 3D (Matt) + Milkdrop (Ryan) = Major w00t!
While I don't normally do much with visualizations, there are times when it's interesting to mess around with. Kids really dig 'em.

I am mesmerized with Geiss' visualizations. I would really like to see a plugin for MC.

Oh, and I did get laid off, btw, so if you know anyone out there hiring graphics programmers, please let me know. =)
Time to make a move, JRiver? :)
-
I thought I had read somewhere that MC9/MC9.1 support Winamp v2.x visualizations . . . .
when I tried it, I got an error message stating that
"Media Jukebox 8.o does not support . . . ."
OK, I may have been wrong about the Winamp vis files, but MJ8?? I KNOW I am using MC9.1
-
Earlier versions of MJ had limited support for Winamp 2.x vis' plugins.

"I start a contract at nVidia today. =) "
Is it too late to convince him??? :(

I have yard work for another 2 months aval

I doubt JRiver could (or would want to) compete with Nvidia as far as the salary and package being offered.
