Can we upgrade to the latest version of madvr at will, or are there only particular versions that have been tested for compatibility with JRiver?

Check out the changelog for 21.0.28. They just upgraded to version v0.89.17. You can always manually grab a version, but you're on you're own since JRiver won't have tested it.
