Title: HDMI .. how to split audio form video?
Post by: spiggytopes on February 11, 2016, 11:50:51 am
Hi All,

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how do I split the HDMI out from my new set top box so that the video goes to the TV and the audio to my analogue amp?

The audio from the HDMI is analogue, isn't it?  ;)

If you have HDMI on the amp, connect the PC to the amp, then run video via HDMI to the TV.

HDMI is digital.  It carries both audio and video.

And if your amp doesn't have HDMI inputs you can get HDMI audio splitters.

Cheap ones will only output stereo, generally converted from a 48k sample rate stream. The only affordable multi channel HDMI converter that I've found is the Atlona AT-HD570. It will give up to 8 channel output, however you may well have to trick it into allowing multi-channel audio. If it thinks that the receiver that it's feeding isn't multichannel capable it will only output 48k stereo.

Stereo would be fine, thanks.

I'll start searching.
