Title: How does jrss downmix 7.1 to 5.1?
Post by: mattkhan on February 18, 2016, 04:14:58 am
I've searched but can't find a clear answer to this. Does anyone know exactly how the channels are downmixed?

This one is pretty easy.

The rear surrounds and surrounds are mixed onto the surround channel.  Both are done at 1.0.

thanks. What do you mean by "at 1.0" exactly?

They're added together at the full level.  Then the entire signal will be attenuated (all channels) to avoid clipping.

Is the amount of attenuation driven by audio analysis or is a fixed amount?

It just totals that one channel will have 2.0 in it as a max (since it's two channels) so everything will be turned down by 0.5.

The actual analysis looks at the totals coming into all the channels and is pretty fancy.  But I think this mix is so simple that what I said above is right.

Ok thanks for confirming that.
