I unintentionally had the "Update tags when file info changes" option disabled for a little while so Genre and Volume Leveling info was not being written to my files. So, I enabled this option and restarted MC. However, when I perform "Update Tags (from library)" the genre changes and volume leveling tags are not being written to the files. MC indicates successful writes and the modified dates for the files are updated, but the tags are not being updated.

What kind of files? How are you checking to see that the tags were written? Have you tried the tag dump window?
Brian.

These are MP3 files. I can see the tags are not updated in Windows Explorer and the tag details in MC when I click on "MP3" at the top of the Tag Window (which I guess is the tag dump window).

Gotta check the obvious first I guess, and you didn't mention it yet, so,
If you check the library fields via the field manager, is "Save in file (when possible)" ticked for those fields?
-
Yes, they are the default Genre and Replay Gain fields which I have not modified and are set to save to file.

Isn't there some weird thing with MP3s and ID3 Version 1 versus ID3 Version 2 tags? I just checked in a tagging program and it shows both for some of my MP3s. Aren't some older MP3s ID3V1 only? If so, then MC couldn't write anything beyond the standard few tags that ID3V1 supports.

These are newer MP3s and do have ID3v2 tags but they are just not being updated for some reason. It is almost as if turning off tag writing for a period of time has marked these files as "never update" or something similar.

I can't seem to find it now, but I thought I remembered reading a Wiki entry on MP3 tagging setup in the windows version of MC (I run MC on a Mac). I thought there were specific settings for MP3 tagging? Maybe my memory is incorrect.

Did you try re-analysing, or changing the Genre to something, then back again?
Can you share a file privately for one of us to test with?
-
Trying to manually modify the Genre tag in MC just caused it to endlessly attempt to save the file tags. I'm not sure why the Update Tags (from library) reported as successful and was able to change the modified dates of the files. In any case, I ended up rebooting my PC and now it works (that's always the default solution, isn't it :)). Thanks to you both for the help.
