So one of my friends changed the text and background colors to black, rendering JRiver unusable. Deleted all jriver files and the install wizard is still all black so now I can't even install it.
Any idea on what I could do? Also this is such a stupid problem for a program to have. IS there a way to force the default view? I thought I had deleted every file for jriver on my computer but the same view settings have carried over.

Try renaming this directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\J River\Media Center 21\Data
to Data.tmp or similar

I am unable to as I can't see anything to install it in the first place. So the file is not yet on my computer. I should have waited before uninstalling to try this.
Have I essentially 'bricked' JRiver until I restore my PC to a previous state?

Sorry, I should have said "from Windows Explorer", try renaming ...

Restored the folder, unfortunately it did not work.
Well I was putting off restoring my computer to factory default but it's the only way I think I can change this. So users beware, if someone selects black on your skin effects, you're screwed.

I'm not convinced. It sounds like you wanted to reinstall windows anyway for some reason anyway...
But, if not, it should be possible to fix. If you want to try, take a screenshot of the installer, and explain exactly what settings you think your friend set that caused this.
-
what if the op installed MC20. do you think this might help?
-
The OP posted over on head-fi about this and I encouraged him to come here and ask about it.
I postulated that someone might have changed the brightness, contrast, or "add color" (or similar) in Skin Effects. He said he thought that's what might have happened.
Are there registry entries for Skin selection and/or Skin effects? Perhaps they could be cleared out manually?
He has also indicated that the installer and uninstaller are similarly affected and he can't see enough detail to use them.
Brian.

It would probably be useful if JRiver could provide a "Default_Settings.bat" file, like madVR has, for these situations.
-
I don't recall every seeing one like this.

Yes.

I can reproduce it with Noire and Skin Effects. The issue does NOT impact the Installer (which seems to not obey skin effects, at least not completely), but the uninstaller seems to.
I'll find the Registry keys. Now I have to, because my MC now looks like:

Found it. The key is here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Center 21\Megamorphis\DSP
You can delete the entire Megamorphis key and all of its sub-keys (with MC completely closed) and it'll fix it. By default, that registry key does not exist, if you have no skin effects applied.
-
Or, if you don't feel comfortable using the Windows Registry Editor, download this file:
http://glynor.com/files/jriver/Megamorphisis_DSP-Fixed.zip
Unzip it. Then, make sure MC is closed completely (you can end task on it in Task Manager if needed), and then double-click on the REG file contained within. When Windows asks, confirm you want to merge the changes into your registry.
Relaunch MC and it should be back to good shape.
