Hi,
After much correspondence and research, I finally received this message from the BBC Radio iPlayer helpdesk:
Hello Mr Green,
Thank you for getting in touch.
I understand the URL format of Radio HD stored in the playlist is not consistent every time you get back to access.
The changes in URL are a security token to ensure that the user is in the UK. This updates every few hours which is why the stream is getting cut off. A smart client that understands these tokens will re-request the stream from time to time to stay up to date. This is why a new request needs to be made to the original URL after a while.
I know this is inconvenience, however hope this helps to explain why this is happening.
Best Regards,
Usha Devi Peri
BBC iPlayer Support Team
For some time now, both in Foobar and now JRiver, the BBC Radio 3 HD stream times out. If the stream is saved in a playlist, the next time it is invoked, it simply shows an error. If the original URL is invoked again from the File menu, it plays.
Would it be possible for JRiver to incorporate a 'lookup' of inputted URLs so that these can be allocated to playlists. By doing this, it will circumvent the problem caused by the URL timing out?
Thanks.

I don't have a problem with repeated access to BBC streams. How are you actually storing it? I have a library entry which points at
http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/uk/sbr_high/ak/bbc_radio_three.m3u8

This is the mp3 stream. The limited stream is the HD stream which is:
http://open.live.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/5/select/version/2.0/mediaset/http-icy-aac-lc-a/format/pls/vpid/bbc_radio_three.pls

It is not an mp3 stream, it is a 320kbps AAC-LC.
A quick search found https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=95473.0 which might be of some help.

That was a highly productive thread. Over a year old now, and the following BBC Radio 3 link which I have had in my library since then, still works...

Fwiw, and iirc, the link I gave resolves to that one (ie download the m3u8 file in my link and it contains your link). AFAIK this is all the OP needs to get what the BBC refer to as the HD stream.

I had problems with the m3u8 files. The stream wouldn't play consistently for me when added to the library. It was too long ago now to remember all the details, but pulling the link out of those files and adding directly to library has continued to work for me, for all stations, since Hendrick got them working for us. Something in the back of my mind is telling me that the m3u8 files kept launching a web page rather than just playing, though I'm getting old, so that might have been something else entirely...

Thank you Mattkhan. This seems to have worked. Why the BBC tech team couldn't have told me this, I don't know. So pleased to have resolved this.
